while it may not be "love" I find it interesting how people dismiss it as mere "instinct." After all, our own urge to hold hands with other people also stem from our human instinct for love, altruism, friendship, protection.

True, you are correct, It is a urge of instinct to find a mate. Humans have made it into a word they call love. I am not sure if i am right or not. But I think it also has to do with otters being soical creatures, it makes them possibly want to be with their mate more than others. But this is just a theory, I do not know if this is even close to teh truth but it is what I believe

it's a fair conjecture. I just wanted to add that the instinct to find a mate is technically only one type (romance) of "love." there are also the love between parents and children, friend, man and nature nature, and the individual to humanity in general.

Correct, there are many types of love, there is the emotional term, which is i would say bonding more than another creature(s). then there is love as in mating to propagate, the emotional term is less common, it is a more term for some animals out there. Most just mate and then go and live their lives. It is all very confusing and I will let philosperers and biologists to do this. A mere kid like me cannot judge what love is.

This is a survival instinct....but notice one is a little female and she is being "protected" by the male. This is something we as humans could benefit from. I see so many "couples" that have no contact with one another. I believe in holding my wife's hand....be in love, or protection.

its natural its so they don't drift apart in the sea when theres a bit of rough water and although it isnt love its still something that shows they want to stay close so you could say it s a 'form' of love

how is that any less love than human "love" human love keeps the species alive. it makes parents protect and care for their children, and it brings to people together, for copulation and eventually pregnancy, resulting in a child, which helps keeps the species going. We like to think we are so different, we have traditions like marriage, and rings, and gifts and everything else but we are just more complicated. Penguins give their mate a special rock as a gift.
