  • Love the vid. Think it's funny about the drop tanks. There was a guy that "dropped tanks" 3 secs before a dogfight and forgot to switch over fuel pumps ..The plane stalled and he took the shot anyways ,,,making The first ever kill in a glider ! lol true story

  • @freakyflow i saw that clip lol, that guy seemed arrogant so probably made it up

  • @TheWhiteOwl23 I doubt that him flying with a wingman Into a bushel of German fighters and make up to command when he landed a story when he had a wingman to back it up But rushing to "drop tanks" and get in the fight. Many pilots made many mistakes and paid for it with there lives

  • This is a great video, do you have any other wartime aircraft training vids?

  • @pearzzz search google for warbird drivein and you will find the rest of this video, as the first link on Zeno's warbirds drive-in

  • training FILM. there was no such thing as "video" during WWII

  • I knew a fellow who flew them in the Pacific, and he said they were a fine plane in the air, but they turned into a bit of a squirrel on take offs and landings with any kind of cross wind.

  • Anyway, the best fighter of ww2 was Yak-3.

  • This plane I think is one of the most iconic Aircraft of the war, along with the Spitfire's dashing curves, the sweeping shapes of the Mig-3 and the rough, hardened look of the P-51 Mustang.

  • my grandfather flew a p38 out of australia, lost an engine and crash landed it in the outback...

  • were there axis forces downthere?...

  • you don't crash land a lightning because it lost an engine ~

  • Correction, it as a P40 he was flying at the time. oil problem. He flew P-38s as well and prefered them. Japanese fighter shot out one of his engines in a P38, he dove towards the ocean, wasn't followed, and made it back to base. He's in a documentary "Injury Slight Please Advise" (do a google search n that) about another pilot (his captain) that ditched in the outback as well, and had to shoot an aborigini to escape. His call sign was Blue Two.

  • yes, the p-38 was the most rugged of the wwii fighters, no question! it's remarkable what damage it could sustain and still bring its pilots home ~

  • Unfortunately, I don't have the rest of that video. I'll search for it, maby I'll find something...

  • @XP55 I think the youtube user airboyd has the whole thing. The thing is its kinda funny like this because the narrator totaly avoids the whole "bail out" question. lol

  • I too would love to see the rest of it!

  • Could you please put on the rest of this video?

  • Truly a Gabelschwanzteufel (forked tail devil) as the Germans named her...

  • God, but it's impossible not to love Lightnings... P-38's are easily some of the most awesome planes ever made.
