@miqojoe well, I am Canadian I am not sure this happens in Canada as far as the population is conserned...I have never seen this in my life...There are homeless here but honestly they have it good in comparison there are so many social programs they are only there because of drug and or alcohol abuse...
Everyone has the same potential. We aren't all born with the same opportunities, but that's no reason to give up on day one. You always have a chance to make life better for yourself.
Can you please explain how the average age of a homeless person is 9 but out of 3 million homeless there are only 1.3 million kids? There is no way that both of those statistics are correct. If all of the kids were 1 month and all of the non-adults were 18 the average age would still be much higher than 9....
skid row is the hardest place i have ever been.i almost am in denial that i was down there mingling with full on crack possesions.Jesus be with the people of skid row and take them out of the horror into love that these people will rejoice in your name amen.
I DONT GET IT HE SAID THERE AINT NOT APPERTUNITYS AND THAN TO FIND OUT HE IS MISSING SCHOOL COME ON YOOU NEED TO STAY IN SCHOOL IF YOU WANT TO BE INVALVED IN FILM OR ANYTHING IN THAT MATTER..JUST BELIEVE IN YOURESELF YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU PUT YOURE MIND INTO IT!
I grew up in Vancouver's skid row...age of two on...I lost three older sisters to the streets...many cousins and friends. I have a Master's Degree in Fine Arts and I am an artist. In looking back, the only real differences between "us" and "them" is that we were poor and marginalized. I gained street smarts and survival skills at a very early age...I am a non-judgemental and caring individual...I share what I have and I think my upbringing, although tough, gave me a great start in life!
While there are good Christian organizations who are doing so much for anyone without expecting anything in return, it does anger me that many of them hold the most vulnerable in our society hostage at the most desperate times of their lives...meaning they force bible study/church services in exchange for shelter, food and clothing; they make it very clear that if you are of a different religion or not heterosexual you aren't worth anything, and God somehow chose these agencies to decide.
Yeah, but the world pretty much hates us already with very few skimp exceptions. It doesn't matter and I'm not saying they have to forcefully donate to Skid row. If they can't handle themselves then they shouldn't donate, but if they can, they should. Take care of your own before you take care of others. It's not fair. They live in this country. They should be helped first and foremost, no ifs ands or butts.
When will the government learn to take care of it's own before aiding other countries? Why can't people with millions of dollars help these poor people? If I was a millionaire, I would give each person there enough money to start their life back up.
hey i understand, but i have to disagree you the reason why you think the gov shouldnt give money to other nations, but if we didnt, the world would be like "wtf why isnt America helping that country?" also i dont agree that millionaires should give their money to a almost homeless cause. How do you think those people in skid row got there? They werent good with money and the fucked themselves and their kids who fucked their kids, and so on and so forth
yup thats the point of the movie, yet the sad part is we created skid row! By people acting inhuman and treating people like last weeks garbage, and placing humans in those conditions we created it! Its sad that america has 80 percent of the worlds resources, and yet only one percent of americans own it! why do they need so much of it? And i believe if you have that much money than you give to charities and do something nice! but we must all put our part into it though!
a lot of them are black, but not everyone there is! I lived there, and i am white! Actually blacks started entering there by the dozens after the crack epidemic! Most before that were insane drunken whites! then crack become huge, and many ended up there, and the nut houses shut down and they were dumped there, and when prisoners in la get out, many are dropped there, and sometimes prisoners have no where to go! yes america still treats many blacks wrong!

People should be sterilized at birth. When they want to have a child in latter years as husband and wife and they can show a proven work history with steady income returns and no serious criminal record (rape, murder, etc) then they should have the sterilization process reversed. Problem solved.
At least the narrator hits it at 6:00. He says, "The tragedy is that they were ever there to begin with." This is totally true. When are we going to wake up in this country, eschew all of our middle-class guilt, and start mandating licenses for people who want to breed. Franklin's mother had him and his siblings living in a hell hole on skid row, and she is not an anomoly in our society. Abortions should be mandated by law for people like Franklin's mother.
I am First Nations and from the age of 2, grew up in Vancouver's Skid Row. I lost 3 sisters there and many cousins and friends. I understand poverty! I have a Master's of Fine Arts degree and haven't let the stigma hold me back.
franklin's belief is there is no hope for those people. well, with an attitude like that, he's right. i've been homeless. that was my motivation to get a job: to get off the streets. it can be done. if these people aren't motivated by this to stop doing drugs, get a job and move on, nothing will motivate them. so, i guess franklin is right.
true! People need to motivate themselves, no matter how much one tries to help them, if they are not motivated to change, or do something different then they cannot get out!
franklin is strong, he is a MAN! He's smart. if i was him i would have picked up the pipe.....but franklin didnt. i hope his skills and talent take him to directing hollywood films. he'd make all the money in the world and never suffer a day in his life again. It isn't that hard to find your self in this unfortunate situation. All it take is an injury or some type of medical condition, follow by the expensive medical bills, you can't maintain your job, you can't pay your bills, much less your mortgage, you lose your home, then you end up here, where the only answer to make the pain go away are the drugs. I'm an American living in Australia and I gotta say, America's government could do A LOT more for it's poor - but it doesn't. Americans need to rise up and demand more. Stop electing politicians that just want to cut taxes for the rich. The whole 'every man for himself' ideology has been taken too far and now the economy is in ruins.
I'm not saying Obama is the answer, but McCain is literally the last thing our country needs right now. DON'T elect that guy.
what life for a country that thinks is the best country in earth.come to sweden you will see what is the best country in the world aamerica aint shit look to this vid and talk
I was homeless. I slept in a baseball dugout, living out of a back pack and a sleeping bag. I worked at a car wash every day, Ate one meal a day, and washed up in gas station bathrooms. I realized that something had to give. There was no future the way things were going. I joined the Army, I got the experience and a hand up. I went through college, I'm an LPN. I haven't forgotten where I came from. This is just another reminder. I never want to go back there. I hope more of us make it out...
you would see more in China because their population is 1.3 billion people in America its only 302 million. I don't know where you got 3rd world tied into a country being poor. First World: the United States and its allies. Second World: the Soviet Union and its allies. Third World: Non-aligned and neutral countries. Thats all those labels mean has nothing to do with being poor or not.
Look at all these fools who think they know what it's like, or even how to solve their problems.. People aren't down there cause they haven't figured that Mcdonalds is hiring. It's Addiction, Abuse, Mental illness along with alot of other complex issues that have left these people on the street. Even if some
Going around and calling people a dumb ass is easy just as sitting around and crying that your poor. Why arent there any white people on skid row? These people just value their leisure more.
Can't this community work out a baby sitting program? Take turns working at various places even if it's a min wage job? I know people who have various problems (in their head) can't do that. But i saw that a lot of those people are capable of working. If they worked full-time they can live somewhere, split rent and food, and save to get an education. Work and sell crack even, I don't care, but if you are able to work mentally and physically and being homeless for over 5 years... Come on.
I hate people who assume it's that easy, the school systems suck, and what kinda college is gonna accept you when you're coming out of a school down there?
LA has crap schools, and when you're living in a place like that trying not to end up out on the streets, a lot of teenagers drop school and /do/ get jobs, so they don't end up homeless, so now what are they supposed to do?
They get stuck in the cycle.
don't act like they bring it upon themselves, that's bullshit.
Min wage jobs are always hiring. Assume that someone could get a full time 40 hour min wage job, or two min wage jobs that totaling 40 hours. Say min wage is 6/h. That's over $13,000 a year. Maybe live in a small 500 sq foot place for $400-$500 a month. Maybe have a good buddy or a girlfriend. Split the rent and food expense and it'll be cheaper. Say you don't split rent and food. That's over 8 grand a year to save. Lowball to say 5grand. Save and go to college? Don't ppl think about this?
It's true that they have it hard. But Franklin should be doing better in school after what he's been through and what he knows could be his future if he messes up now he's out of skid row. Colleges would love to take in a kid with his kind of background, by the way. Impoverished, minority with a chance to rise up out of destitution.
I don't think there will ever be an end to poverty. We will always have some sort of class separation, or people in flux as they move from class to class. I work in the non-profit field and there is always a new addict to help.
They're down there, getting a roof over their head, food in their belly, dental care, medical care, they're on vacation. They aren't poor, they're people who value their leisure time more than they value the things they could buy if they'd work. Sure they live like animals, but that's how they want to live. Who's to say they're wrong and those of us who work are right?
The Government and President are doing NOTHING to solve this. What will happen if one day all these homeless people decide they have had enough and run into all these wealthy LA people's homes! What? Arrest all of them? What worse can they do to them!? I'm surprised it has not come to that. Can you imagine struggling in life like these people and you see Paris fucking Hilton drive past you in her $200,000 vehicle! Oh my god...I think I would snap!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Paris Hilton has earned all her money, she hasn't taken anything from her family since she turned 18. She earned it because she works hard, something that would cure most of the problems this lame video is whining about.
If it's so easy, why don't the losers on skid row do it? Sure Paris drives by in her Bently, but she paid cash for that Bently with money she earned! She's very successful. If those skid-row live in a shelter, why do you call them "homeless"? If they have a roof over their heads, they have a home. Maybe not as nice a home as they'd like, but neither do I, and I work! There's only one thing you can do for the poor, don't be one of them!
Growlin stfu dude. you live with your fuckin parents and you have never gotten a chance to go out and to see the real world. you got it lucky bitch. hope you die a painful death
As bad as someone's life can become... it can be SIGNIFICANTLY WORST with drugs... all these crack fends are self destructing but the drug deals are making good there.
There u have it. Paris hilton is worth multi-millions for doing sweet fuck all and these kids have nothing. they both live in the same city. the most ritch and the most poor. americas celebrity's WAY over payed. the cast of friends got paid 1 mill a show. these kids don't have food. it makes me sick.
It's like this: the more money you have, the more money people will give you. Especially when you are stupid and can't do anything - e.g. like Paris Hilton.
Anyone can volunteer on skid row. People who don't have a lot of money can still volunteer their time and help out. Its a problem for anyone to solve. Not the famous or rich, but you and me..
hold it people the problem its no only school here, its jobs and good salaries its medical healt its a lot of stuff, and of course its all caused by the system .that let all this people fall deeper and deeper, and if u dont watch out u could be the next skid road family.u need to organize and get a goverment that his only priority its to listen to the necesities of the people .we pay alot of money on taxes and this here its not nice.they haft to stop wasting our money on satelites and wars.
wow! when i saw these posted on myspace i automatically clicked on them. and i started watching them this morning. and as soon as i got home i finished the vids. very educational. i live 20 mins from all this. its terrible to see this lifestlye. thanks for posting these videos. people need to see this!
I wish I could talk to this guy because I know the perfect school in L.A he can go to.
Its a film school for under-privileged youth, where you are trained as an entry level cameraman for the cinematographers union.
Its a free school and a great opportunity, do you know how much money they make in the union? They are doing this because the film union has, up until now, been 90% white, and decided they have to change this.
It is important for people to realize that it is near impossible for these people to get out of poverty. The children are at such a disadvantage that once they reach adulthood they cannot move on from poverty. Their education suffers a great deal. Education would help these kids so much, but there is no one there to instill this sort of attitude. Without education they can not speak the way one is expected to speak in this society nor can they do the sort of basic things required of them.
thisd shouldn't be happening in North America not to kids!

Ive been to two communist/socialist countries, and I saw more poor people in those countries than America ever had.
Stop repeating some bullshit you heard, and go out and explore the world for yourself.
SeeYouNextFall 3 years ago
you saw over 5 million people? thats impressive
acravingforchem 3 years ago
No I saw more poor people in China than compared to poor people in America.
I grew up in Baltimore city, so I have seen plenty of poor people.
Either way, to those who gave my comment the thumbs down, Statistics dont lie. There are far more poor people in 3rd world countries than America.
But I guess that's just too much logic for some to handle.
SeeYouNextFall 3 years ago
you would see more in China because their population is 1.3 billion people in America its only 302 million. I don't know where you got 3rd world tied into a country being poor. First World: the United States and its allies. Second World: the Soviet Union and its allies. Third World: Non-aligned and neutral countries. Thats all those labels mean has nothing to do with being poor or not.
90sjunk 3 years ago
What's your point? We need to be aware of all poverty in the world...here and in other countries. What's there to argue about?

Mandatory birth control for anyone living in government subsidized housing would eliminate half the problems in this video.

Why dont these kids go to school, get a job, go to college and then live in the pretty big biuldings like the white people?

Can't this community work out a baby sitting program? Take turns working at various places even if it's a min wage job? I know people who have various problems (in their head) can't do that. But i saw that a lot of those people are capable of working. If they worked full-time they can live somewhere, split rent and food, and save to get an education. Work and sell crack even, I don't care, but if you are able to work mentally and physically and being homeless for over 5 years... Come on.
nevous8 3 years ago
very true
WallMoselover13 3 years ago

Yeah my post was just f#$%n thumbs down. My post made sense and was 100% factual but I guess I'm wrong.

It's true that they have it hard. But Franklin should be doing better in school after what he's been through and what he knows could be his future if he messes up now he's out of skid row. Colleges would love to take in a kid with his kind of background, by the way. Impoverished, minority with a chance to rise up out of destitution.
peanut18544 3 years ago
Yeah, but there have been people in their situation and have become millionaires. I don't want to generalize but a lot "just don't care".
nevous8 3 years ago
If you're surrounded by failure you're given no reason to care. It's a cycle.

I don't think there will ever be an end to poverty. We will always have some sort of class separation, or people in flux as they move from class to class. I work in the non-profit field and there is always a new addict to help.
thedarkocean 3 years ago
They're down there, getting a roof over their head, food in their belly, dental care, medical care, they're on vacation. They aren't poor, they're people who value their leisure time more than they value the things they could buy if they'd work. Sure they live like animals, but that's how they want to live. Who's to say they're wrong and those of us who work are right?
GrowlinWillie 3 years ago
The Government and President are doing NOTHING to solve this. What will happen if one day all these homeless people decide they have had enough and run into all these wealthy LA people's homes! What? Arrest all of them? What worse can they do to them!? I'm surprised it has not come to that. Can you imagine struggling in life like these people and you see Paris fucking Hilton drive past you in her $200,000 vehicle! Oh my god...I think I would snap!

Paris Hilton has earned all her money, she hasn't taken anything from her family since she turned 18. She earned it because she works hard, something that would cure most of the problems this lame video is whining about.
GrowlinWillie 3 years ago
hhahahahah Yeah sure she has!! Standing if front of a camera saying "That's Hot" is very fucking hard to do! hahahahahahahaah
nopossi 3 years ago
If it's so easy, why don't the losers on skid row do it? Sure Paris drives by in her Bently, but she paid cash for that Bently with money she earned! She's very successful. If those skid-row live in a shelter, why do you call them "homeless"? If they have a roof over their heads, they have a home. Maybe not as nice a home as they'd like, but neither do I, and I work! There's only one thing you can do for the poor, don't be one of them!

paris hilton is just an exaple you idiot! are you gonna cry over that comment ?

I'm an idiot? You're talking about something you know nothing about, and since I don't, I guess that makes me an idiot in your book.

okay she worked hard in some areas. But she also gets paid to just be places, and to party. She isn't a good example haha.
