@LCHFinCanada and that being said, if you have issues with gaining weight or with glycemic control, limit your grain intake as well as the starchy veggies (such as potatoes, corn, parsnips, etc.) and avoid really sugary fruits.
The best fruits for people with glycemic issues are berries and cherries - tons of antioxidants, fiber, nutrients and low-GI.
Overall I think too many people associate LCHF with big piles of meat and no veggies - and that's the WRONG idea of the diet.
Sourcing grass fed meat and everyone upping their protein/meat intake is nice in theory but isn't very realistic. The reason meat is so cheap and prolific is because it IS grain fed. If we switched to an entirely grass-based system, it would be much less affordable. There wouldn't even be enough pasture to support that kind of protein consumption. I'm not saying she's wrong about the diet, I definitely respond better to low-carb, but from an environmental perspective, it's a really tough call.
@LCHFinCanada But where is it? I would love to see sustainable agriculture as the only form of farming but not at the expense of wildlife habitat (aka, deforestation). We do use a TON of acreage for growing grain, which could potentially be used for grazing if you could cultivate appropriate grasses (though this mostly depends on the soil). If you could provide a source for this information I'd love to read it. I'm sick of vegans making me feel bad for eating pastured meat.
Well, lets be honest - much of it in the US is now being used for feedlots, etc.
Canada, Argentina, and other countries that do well with beef-production still have tons of land available for more grass-fed beef, but unfortunately many corporations are trying to push factory-farming here, too.
I wish more people would just refuse to support factory-farmed meat. Sure, grass-fed is more expensive... but that way we'll eat moderate amounts...
@LCHFinCanada Yes, they do, but they also have significantly lower populations than the US. I'm a little confused because your first response seems to indicate that you think there's enough pasture for the level of meat consumption promoted here and yet your second reply mentions eating meat in "moderate amounts." Do you agree with Dr. Vernon's recommendations? Also, some people truly can't afford grass-fed meat and if this diet is supposedly healthier, where does that leave them?
@Vivalarachie "...enough pasture for the level of meat consumption promoted here ..."
I do NOT believe everyone should eat LCHF - I personally believe only the morbidly obese or diabetics should consider it, and AS they lose necessary visceral bodyfat to promote health, they should consider starting to add carbohydrate back into their diets to the point that the health-benefits they've encountered remain...
I don't believe ANYONE's diet should be based 'primarily' on meat, no.
@Vivalarachie "...Do you agree with Dr. Vernon's recommendations? ..."
For a subset of obese people, yes. I also believe in high-intensity-interval-training on a regular (minimum 5x a week) basis too though.
... do I think the world should be on it? Yes AND no. I think the world needs to eliminate (or severely restrict) refined/processed carbs/sugars, as Dr. Vernon suggests. I also believe most dieters need more non-starchy veggies in their diets though...
@Vivalarachie "...some people truly can't afford grass-fed meat ..."
Yes, it's very expensive some places. But we don't need huge servings to get our nutrients. I'm a BIG guy - 6'3" and 224lbs and a mesomorph... even though I have a large caloric need, my ideal portion size for a piece of beef is only about 8oz for a supper meal. If I couldn't afford steak I'd eat a ground beef patty instead.
Most people should eat smaller servings anyway, with pricier meat, they will.
@Vivalarachie "...Do you agree with Dr. Vernon's recommendations?"
Overall I think obesity is well-controlled with low-carb/high-fat diets and exercise. The fat doesn't have to come from meat though. My fat intake comes from meat, salad dressings (made with un-refined oils only), coconut oil, butter, avacado, nuts etc.
If I got all my fat from meat... I'd be broke, LOL. (2 kids in university and one in high-school still... It's expensive...)
@Vivalarachie "...you think there's enough pasture for the level of meat consumption promoted here..."
I think there's enough pasture land available for the level of meat-consumption the world actually NEEDS.
I don't think Mary Vernon or any other obesity specialists promotes a "meat-based" diet, and LCHF isn't truly meat-based... Personally, I usually only eat meat an average of 2x a day out of 6 daily meals/snacks I consume... Most of my fats come from other sources.
@Vivalarachie "...I would love to see sustainable agriculture as the only form of farming ..."
In addition to people not having a clue about what moderate meat intake is, I think another issue is the TREMENDOUS WASTE that goes on... With so much food being thrown out in modern society (way more than most people think....) and our tendency to overeat, we're obviously raising for food double, triple, quadruple or maybe more animals we really need for food.
Dr. Vernon is extremely knowledgeable about weight management. She has been a presenter at the ASBP Conferences, and we have gleened so much from her presentations.
Well, it's not correct to say ALL carbs are bad... But for the obese, they should get all their carbs from fresh (where possible), organic (where possible) non-starchy vegetables. I eat about 6 to 8 cups of vegetables daily, myself - and am usually between 45-60g of carb daily, because they're non-starchy. (No potatoes, no corn, etc.)
Vegetables have important nutrients healthy for us humans...
Refined/processed carbs/sugars are simply not healthy. Neither are refined oils.
Im a first year Bach of Science student (age 40) and last year I did biochemistry, and I remember putting my hand up in class and asking my lecturer (after learning how protein, CHO and fats metabolise) and asking um so why are we eating CHO? To his credit, he said, Gee Jane I don't know, why don't you look into that. I did, and I lost 20kg in 6 weeks.... amazing!
@fastjane1 wow, 20kg in 6 weeks! that's AMAZING weight loss, did you supplement your diet with exercise? Can you tell me more? I'm thinking of switching to a low carb diet!
I did no exercise but plan to do some bodyweight in the next few months. You can add me on my brand new facebook sunshine coast primal ... I would be happy to be your mentor on there, not that Im the expert or anything but hey the more the merrier!
@PwnedSexily Nope, she's not skinny. At her age and considering what she does for a living, why would she be skinny?
She's not an athlete, she's a doctor specializing in bariatric medicine. She's also an author, educator, etc. It's not surprising she's not thin.
If someone discounts what she has to say because of her weight, they don't care to learn the truth anyway, and even if she were thin, those people would find some other reason to ignore her.
@LCHFinCanada I follow a cyclic ketogenic diet, so I know what she is saying is correct. I am also a biochemist. Why should it be unsurprising that she is not thin since she says she is on this diet? There are plenty of other people her age that look much more fit. It is amazing how you you extrapolated so much from a simple sentence I wrote. Also referring to me in the 3rd person as a saftey net isn't all that clever, it is actually condescending.
@PwnedSexily well, it's honestly hard to see what kind of weight she carries - she may just be only marginally overweight and a fairly large-framed person. Pictures I can find of her on the internet certainly suggest she is...
"Also referring to me in the 3rd person as a saftey net isn't all that clever..."
First of all, I did no such thing. If you 'extrapolated so much' from my last sentence, then you assume much, incorrectly.
@LCHFinCanada The reason I pointed that out is there is a certain element, especially the fruitarian crowd that tends to jump on any low-carb video and scream "so and so is fat, so obviously they're wrong!"
The do this with Loren Cordain, with Mary Vernon, even with Robb Wolf (who isn't fat except that some photos of him on the internet obviously have their aspect-ratio adjusted incorrectly.)
@LCHFinCanada Right, but since you chose to reply to MY comment, it is clear that you included me in group that your comment encompassed. So I didn't extrapolate anything. Unless you mean to say that you really weren't including me, and that comment was completely disparate from my comment; a highly unlikely thing.
And yes, I assumed you were one of those people that was suggesting that because she wasn't skinny, she was wrong... As such my reply was directed not just at you, but at anyone coming to post anything similar. Thus the wording - there was no "safety net" attempted.
My bad for making an assumption. I see so many of those kinds of stupid arguments from ignorant people that I probably made a knee-jerk reaction. Apologies for that.
@PwnedSexily That's certainly one of my problems. As a 46 year old who recently lost almost 100lbs, my skin is NOT elastic - it's odd, when I stand up in front of the mirror I can see abdominal definition, but when I sit down, it looks like I have a paunch.
@LCHFinCanada What I really meant by that comment was, does she truly practice what she preaches? There isn't really an easy way to know if she actually does or not.
@PwnedSexily The only way to know would be to know her personally, that is true.
However, doing some research on her we read things like this "Interestingly for a bariatrician, Dr. Vernon feels that focusing on weight is missing the boat, because weight is only a marker for an underlying problem. "
She looks more at glycemic control and other lab results than weight, it appears. It's very possible that she is slightly overweight and, at the same time, quite healthy.
my dr. knows nothing about nutrition, no dr I have ever had knows anything about it... wish this lady was my dr..... geesh.... also, if you look up Bariatric Physicians, all they do is weightloss surgery.... that isn't right... there are those of us who have 30 lbs to lose who need specialist to help us, other than weightwatchers which does not work, where do we for help...

She lost some weight (15 lbs) and her asthma has dramatically improved, but her Dr wants her back on statins. I assume there is some thyroid interference going on.
@gchazaliae That maybe the case. My sister in law had to be put on some thyroid medicine for the weight to start coming off. She would be on a starvation diet and her body still had borderline high insulin/blood sugar levels. She's really happy now after years of failed tries.
@gchazaliae Was she actually in ketosis? she may have to increase fat consumption and decrease protein consumption. This is safe as long as she isn't diabetic, because it has the potential to cause ketoacidosis in diabetics. That's one thing I didn't agree with in this video... I love this interview because Dr. Vernon cuts to the heart of the matter. We can argue back and forth between low carb or high carb diets, or whether low fat or high fat is good for you, but ultimately it comes down to what induces the best results for the most people, without them having to suffer through hunger. Arguing about the biochemistry maybe fine for academic types like Dr. Robert Lustig or Gary Taubes, but ultimately it comes down to the fact that low carb works the best!

I think personally if NOT obese or diabetic, the "ideal" diet is based on:
1. Organic, fresh (when possible) vegetables, especially leafy greens and colorful veggies.
2. Organic (free-range/grass-fed, etc.) meats in moderation.
3. Organic fruits in moderation
4. Nuts, seeds, some whole grains (avoid modern wheat and limit grains if gluten-sensitive)
5. Fats/oils that occur in nature (no refined)
The macronutrient profile for a person depends on what makes them healthy and feel good.

@Vivalarachie "...There wouldn't even be enough pasture to support that kind of protein consumption..."
This is absolutely untrue - a myth often propagated by vegan/vegetarian propagandists with no basis in science and no sources.
The truth is that there is CONSIDERABLE pasture land unsuitable for grain agriculture that is perfectly fine for grazing land.
The environmental ideas don't take into account the massive waste and over consumption that takes place. Fix those... =)
