The surgery must have been terrifying to go through with, but science persists and here we have the best of all outcomes. This clip was moving to watch; not only am I very pleased with the results, but I absolutely cherish my faith in science.
What a wonderful story. My brother lost his larynx to throat cancer. We all appreciate how life changing losing your voice can be. I wonder if larynx transplant recipients have to be on anti-rejection medication.
Dear CBS, Why did you choose to use your own medically inaccurate animation over the animation that was provided by UCDMC at the Press Conference? Unlike almost every other major news source worldwide, you chose to depict the transplant with the recipient's thyroid gland being separated and then reunited, which is impossible.
So, how does her breathing tube work? Is she able to breath through her nose/mouth, or does it /have/ to be through the tube? Either way, awesome job, doctor(s). You make me proud.
CBS, there are some comments to this video that contain profanity. Please remove those, as I don't find that to be professional. Also, why is the quality of this video so terrible? Do better.
OH MY (...). You people are so dang stupid... I just cannot believe that watching this, the topic of discussion would again be (...) and what not... Have you ever heard the story about the flood? The religious man praying sitting on the roof of his house and asking god to help him, sees three boats float by, denies their offer to take him to a safe place three times, drowns and walks up to St. Peter and says: "I thought you had me kept, why'd you let me die?" To which Peter replies:
@fescolfaro "We've sent you three boats, you didn't take any, we can only go as far as your own free will guide and save yourself in the end."
Call it "surgery" or "science". And actually, the science of surgery. Why can't the scientist and the surgeon be tools in gods' hands?? The most outspoken religious fanatics actually sound like the ones with the dimmest faith.
@ICLAIMTHISNAME Don't give God credit for the works of man. Saying it was an act of God that her voice was restored is just like saying it was an act of God that her voice was taken away and she was made to suffer for 12 years. So, if a doctor deliberately destroyed her larynx in order to "test" her or "punish" her and made her mute for 12 years, but then restored her voice through surgery 12 years later, would you be singing the doctor's praises?
@PersonNo1 I only need to repect a person's right to have and to express their faith... that I would defend as far as I can.
But I don't need to "respect" a person's faith in the sense I have to abstain from keeping or expressing my opinion that the faith in question is unfounded, illogical or an outright delusion.
Absolutely amazing. Hearing her speak, hearing a previously mute person speak, is moving... simply astounding. A true triumph of science and medicine.
@LunchAnderson I'm pretty sure it's called "surgery". There's no need to throw in the word "science" whenever you see a comment that could be construed to have come from someone who believes in a higher power.
@awer25 It's surgery, yes, but I'm pretty sure there's some science behind it. Anyway, I don't give a flying fuck about what you think is needed or not. I'm just so damn tired of hearing people attributing the work of thousands of people throughout history to an invisible cosmic teddybear.
Awesome! I wonder what she sounded like before she lost her voice o_o

@GracesGreenGarden They do. This woman was already on anti-rejection medication for previous transplants, so that wasn't a concern.

@jlkirkjr You can't win an argument against a man of faith. But you need to respect people's beliefs anyway.

@mkarnerfors Sure but what I mean is you can't just attack someone's beliefs because you don't think the same.
Attacking is not the same as arguing.
