  • u lot are lucky this just happen to me dented front of the roof and smashed my winscreen to bits write off!!!!!

  • Thats just happened to me! 1999 Clio...they will only admit to the Clio 2 Arseholes! And the immobilizer is faulty! Same with me NEVER AGAIN WILL I GET A RENAULT!

  • lol french cars...

  • This happened to me today with my clio and pretty much has the exact same damage as this car. It is such a horrible experience and im still in shock yet. People with clios should get that checked because it really has scared me!

  • im not worry about my clio doing this! once i had heard about the faulty catch i took it stright into the garage and had it check out but they said all was good, but i dont want it to happen to me as judging by urs it look pretty nasty and must of be scary when it happened!! there is nothing in my handbook about how to look after the catch thought? should i just ask when it gets serviced if they can see if its ok and had no problems?

  • This happened to us today. Police and passers by knew all about how rubbish Renault clios are. Never buy one. Luckily no-one was hurt. And no we didnt get any recall letter

  • Hey.. i got my Clio today and didn't worry one bit about the Bonnet flying open haha. I'm more worried about her being pinched whilst i'm in bed tonight haha xx

  • Oh right well i might give them a ring tommorow then to make sure before i go and pick it up on Saturday.

I must admit the idea of driving my first car home doesn't sound all that appealing anymore.

Did you have enough warning etc to stop or did it literally just go whooosh and then smash?

  • I've owned this car since March 2008 and I do 25k / yr so I wouldn't let the worry of it spoil your first drive. :-)

Unfortunately it was just "whoosh smash" I'm afraid. One second I'm changing gear singing along to sex on fire, the next I'm staring at my bonnet wondering wtf just happened.

  • Well at least it happened during a good song haha No but seriously wow it must of been awful.

Did Renault foot the bill for it?

  • It was more of a shock than anything. I remember being cheesed that I had to stand in the cold waiting for the recovery truck most of all.

And no, Renault refuse to accept responsibility for any of these accidents. They claim it is a lack of user maintenance of the bonnet catch?!?! Who the hell maintains their bonnet catch?

It's not in the manual that you have to do anything with it and it's not really covered by any servicing.

  • Just for the record this cost me my £400 excess and my no claims bonus (as it was a "fault claim"). :(

  • See my insurance is high enough anyway with just passing my test and being 2 years away from the cheaper age etc.

I've asked loads of friends since discovering this and they said they're clio's have been fine just to keep 'oiling the catch' what ever that means.

Thats pretty bad that Renault arn't accepting any responsibilities for this fault when surely if it happens to more then a hundred cars it's classed as a fault on their design structure etc

I'm still excited for Saturday though!

  • I've the same problem. Last year it was £1600, this year £1000.

Oiling the catch sounds sensible since it corrodes causing it to stick which is why it fails. Get some WD40 and give it a good douse every so often (assuming its ok when you get it).

Hope you have fun in your new car. :D

  • Oh my god, what model is your clio and year?

    I've just paid a deposit on a y reg 2001 model 1.2 authentique clio.

I never knew about this problem until someone told me. Is there a way to check the safety of this before i go and pay the rest of the money cause it's a lovely car and i'll be having my little one in the back etc O_o

  • Mine is a 2003 dci 65. Pretty much all Clios from 97 to 05 are affected so you'll need to get the bonnet catch checked on yours.

You should be able to take it in to any Renault dealer and tell them you're concerned about the bonnet catch and they should check it for free.

If it turns out to be faulty I believe (although I'm not sure) they'll also replace it for free.

    HTH

  • Repair bill : £1500
