yes i was 8 when this came out and i put the poster on my wall which concerned my parents and teachers. a great elton song written in witch language to poison your souls and minds, rant and babble about how great it is your intelligence amuses me.
Summer of 75 babe EJ ruled the airwaves; when albums were exciting and meant something. This song even got heavy airplay on AM radio that year along with the title track even though neither were single releases.
Davey Johnston rules !!!!! Great guitar work !!!! Is that Cooper in the background! Great percussion!!! Is Dee Murry There? Yes! How about Nigel Olson? Yes!!!
I remember waiting for this to come out in the Summer of '75. All the kids were waiting on its release. And, when it came out, we all knew the songs inside and out within a few days. Great great album.
This album tells of Elton and his song writer Bernie Taupi in the early years of their musical careers in London (from 1967 to 1969). This song tells of the British 'food stamps' and what they had to work for to eek out a living.
Been jamming to Sir Elton tonight on YouTube, and nearly forgot how AWESOME his music is, and how much I loved it when I was a young lad back in the 70s. Thanks for the time travel!
I first bought this album as an 8-track! It was a clever format where the tape continuously played and I'd often fall asleep listening to an album and wake up in the early hours still listening to it. Capt'n Fantastic was certainly a great album but unfortunately seemed to be the peak of Elton's and Bernie's creativity (IMO.)
Davey Johnstone gets a LOT of credit on this one. It's the hardest rocker on the album yet he manages to blend in some really nice acoustic guiter work.
Elton (and Bernie) define greatness. But there was a helluva' band back there as well. Cheers!
i'm 14 and i hate all that lady gaga and other garbage my dad introduced me to elton john and hes one of my favorites along with the beatles, the who, bruce springsteen, and eric clapton
@springsteen96 OMG someone who doesn't have there head shoved up there ass! I am 23 and when I was your age I got made fun of so much for loving this music. Stay the course and if you love EJ I would recomend having your dad try and find the box set called "to be continued" It has his hits and other songs that you probly never heard before! Also has the song Come back baby I think it was called. EJ wrote it and it was from when he was in a band!
One of Elton's best rockers! Notice how Gus Dudgeon used the trick of turning up the volume sound VERY gradually so that by the end of the song, it's louder than when it started. He did this on 'Your Sister Can't Twist...' and 'Someone Saved My Life Tonight' too!
If my two grade school/high school friends from the 60's/70's Ray and Tim come to this site to listen to this song, this is the first time I could listen to it since Tim came to NJ to visit in '75 and Ray played the song over and over the entire week just to drive us nuts. Great song, great memories, glad I can listen to it again and appreciate it once more :-)
This album, as awesome as it truly is, meant the end of the road for Nigel and Dee, which in my opinion was an absolute idiotic move, though 'Rock Of The Westies' was a great album...That magical sound had changed forever...
@Starlitblond I remember me and a friend of mine used to listen to it everyday after school back in '75 when it just came out. It IS a great LP, kind of an overlooked under rated classic IMHO!!
jim102353 has his sequence wrong - If he is starting with Tumbleweed Connection, where is Madman Across The Water? Also, Honky Chateau came out a year before Don't Shoot Me.
elton was at his best in the 70's,this is my favourite album.had this on vinyl,8 track .cassette and cd.i think it's the best he did. dont shoot me and goodbye yellow brick road are close behind
The sequence of LP's - Tumbleweed Connection, Friends, Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player, Honky Chateau, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Caribou, Captain Fantastic & the Brown Dirt Cowboy, Blue Moves. Lets not forget Empty Sky, Your Song before all of that. Quite a run, the most consistent and successful artist since the breakup of the Beatles. The Stones, Led Zep, Beach Boys, Four Seasons, Michael Jackson, & Pink Floyd were all great and still are, but Elton is the greatest of them all.
wabbitstu, you are right that I forgot about Rock Of The Westies however I did not forget to go out and buy it when it was first released. Elton changed his band with that LP. I have it in CD also. "Island Girl" was the top charted on it at #1 for 3 weeks in October 1975.
I remember when Elton fired bassist Dee Murray and drummer Nigel Olsson prior to going out on the road to promote Capt. Fantastic. He replaced them with Roger Pope on drums, and Kenny Parsarelli on Bass. Dee Murray was pretty upset by it, even up until the time he died in the late
Gotta get a Metal ticket !
1975 I miss you-(no pain - no regrets !)
