  • This is a flawless song. Every time i heard it, i get more amazed.

  • the simple percussion is perfect.. no drums work, this is percussion

  • Small moment in time captured forever.

  • 4:58 my god

  • Can't imagine how amazing it had to be to take part in the making of this song, I wonder if any of the members playing the violins/clarinets realized how famous and timeless this song would turn out to be.

  • This is an awesome clip that I'd never seen before... Thank you so much for sharing...

  • Brian, I freaking love you.

  • The Beatles never lived a Little Deuce Coupe...this is America.

  • I've heard a celestial choir sing....

    So achingly beautiful.

  • remember Brian was the composer/producer but no beach boys played instruments.. the Beatles did music/composition and some production.... 4 guys alone for the most part doing it all.. that's the big difference..

  • If you look at the studio logs, Carl was right there on guitar a lot of the time along with all the studio musicians.

  • @haulofrecords

Wow, right there with a guitar!! And did he strum it during the songs too? Brian was a genius, but the other members truly had very little impact... the Beatles did it all with 4 guys and a great group of producers. Especially Geoff Emerick.

  • Sublime!

  • Yes, Yes, This is good

  • @Eduardo10390

THE BEATLES Anthology 5 (Part 3/3) Subtitulado Español.[HQ]

    Starting at 17:49

It's even got spanish subtitles, so you go no excuse for not being able to understand what's being said, amigo.

  • @Eduardo10390 "nowhere have the beatles said Brian inspired the sound of paperback writer. "

In the Beatles Anthology, the film of the Beatles playing at the Budokan in 1966 is shown. Right before it plays, George says We were trying to compete with the Beach Boys and Pet Sounds and all that..." and then they start singing Paperback Writer. Can you figure it out now?

P.S. Your statement ""pet sounds will never be on the same level as pet sounds" is great. I made it into a bumper sticker.

  • It's hard to believe all those studios that produced all those hits are probably digital now.

  • that's Brian singing, isn't it? Not Carl.

    Just incredible.

  • @apollion888 Yeah - these tracks were made when the rest were on tour - the tracks were finished and he sang all the vocal parts - then they learned them when they came back from touring. This is really a Brian Wilson album more than a B.B album.

  • @apollion888 - Carl sang the lead vocal on this. Brian might have done some demo tracking of the vocal, but Brian ultimately felt Carl's voice was better suited to the song.

  • Absolutely wonderful song. 3:14 onward is amazing.

  • 3.30 to 5.20

  • 3;30 to 5;20 is so heartbreaking, how great were these musicians

  • Masterpiece of music under magnifying glass

  • Thank you so much, this is beautiful beautiful beautiful.

  • Mozart/Beethoven McCartney/Wilson Be glad you were around in this time on this worderful earth, they will listen to this for 1000`s of years. We did truly live in a wonderful time in music

  • @ishiibrad

I couldn't agree more. And we heard it first as we were growing up. Im so glad they kept these behind the scenes recordings for posterity.

  • Now that was special.

  • fuking musical genius....

  • Brian really was in charge, wasn't he? Amazing to think how young he was, whereas the Beatles had George Martin.

  • @jackstpaul the only difference most of Brian's arrangements all sounded the same (i.e. the backing vocals never developed, et al) while The Beatles were always coming up with something new and fresh. Also, The Beatles wrote and performed their own songs, while Brian brought in a bunch of session musicians, and The Beach Boys' backing band is almost completely absent from this album

  • @Eduardo10390 The Beatles had George Martin to do the producing and arranging (ever hear a demo of a Beatles song or studio sessions - thank god for George Martin!!). George Martin even talks about this in his documentary "The Rhythm of Life", filmed in 1997, of how much more that Brian was doing with all of these responsibilities over and above what John/Paul/George contributed (Ringo just showed up). Brian showed progress in his arrangements and production through Smile...then he checked out

  • @ms8596 Maybe if you're talking about a Beatles song up until early 1965. Once the Beatles knew what instruments they had at their disposal, they made their own arrangements, read any of Mark Lewisohn's books on the Beatles or the Beatles Anthology, and George Martin himself will tell you. The Beatles by mid-1965 would write the songs at home, and work on the arrangements in the studio. To say that Ringo just showed up completely discounts your opinions period.

  • @Eduardo10390 Well, thanks for taking this to the level of a 12 year old - "completely discounts your opinions period." I thought we'd have an educated discussion. I am a huge Beatles fan, but you obviously haven't read the influence Brian Wilson had on them, know his progression in his music writing and arrangements, nor know how he was the "center" that all artists (that mattered) were focusing on until his 99% withdrawal succumbing to the Mike Love's of the world.

  • @ms8596 there's nothing childish about me saying that your lack of knowledge discounts your opinion in this argument to me. the beatles were inspired by pet sounds. nowhere have the beatles said Brian inspired the sound of paperback writer. brian wilson made an album where each song sounded exactly the same, just like the supremes. pet sounds will never be on the same level as pet sounds. the beatles made each song an individual, artistic expression

  • @Eduardo10390 Paperback Writer is so known to be trying to capture the Brian Wilson sound from the period (pre-Pet Sounds). Each song sounds the same? You really do have your head up your ass. You obviously have no musical training whatsoever or you'd recognize the arrangement and production growth from his start through Smile. Good luck to you.

  • @ms8596 Chill out bro. You're making an ass of yourself. This is not what this video is about.

  • @Eduardo10390 Yes, George, John, and Paul experimented and added many instruments (so did Brian, he just had others play them in the studio), I was referring to the multitude of instruments (strings, horns, etc) that the Beatles added to their songs that were played by studio musicians just like Brian...and they even quit the road like Brian to focus on their music. Yes, by late '67, it was all Beatles, Brian quit.

  • @ms8596 Brian touring because he was losing his mind and was drugged up on LSD, just like Syd Barrett. The Beach Boys themselves said that. And why did Brian, the musical genius quit in '67? Because The Beatles attained the sound he was going for. What a genius, he had no rebuttal. A true geniuses never give up and walk away when another artist releases something challenging.

  • @Eduardo10390 Brian quit because of his pressure to "Not Fuck with the formula" and "what is this music?", "what are these lyrics", from members like Mike Love and Al Jardine...just cared about continuing to crank out love, surf, car tunes, and who profited from writing lyrics and stood to lose a bundle - Mike Love. Brian crumpled under all the pressure of supporting his family (4 of the 5 bands members - brothers/cousin) and should have gone solo.

  • @ms8596 The Beatles didn't quit when Brian released Pet Sounds. They released Pepper, then the White Album, Abbey Road. Brian isn't even in the same league. End of discussion.rian's whole game plan was admittedly to do what Phil Spector had done. The Beatles wanted to do something better than what had been done before. There's the difference.

  • @Eduardo10390 I didn't say the Beatles quit - I was praising them as they took off in bigger bolder directions continuing to grow. Brian quit and shelved Smile, succumbing to the pressures of certain band memberts Your knowledge is pathetic. You have shown yourself to be abysmally small when it comes to anything more than basic knowledge any teenager could acquire from any simple fan mag. I can't wait for your response, although I'm done playing your silly little game.

  • @Eduardo10390 You can't take away what Brian did to that point at such a young age, all the innovation, new directions, unheard of hooks, stops, instruments. The Beatles took notice and were inspired by it. They collectively "Look, Listen, Vibrate, Smile!" Surely as a historian of the Beatles, you would know all of this.

  • @Eduardo10390 The progression in Brian's arrangements and production led to and inspired the Beatles, Pet Sounds inspired Sgt. Peppers, etc, Paperback Writer earlier was inspired by their respect of Brian's sound. It is well known the creative competition and respect between the two groups, even having Paul show up for Smile sessions (John talks about the influence in an interview). Unfortunately Brian checked out with the familial pressure of "don't f with the formula", game over in '67.

  • @Eduardo10390 ...and it is well known, that yes, Brian had his studio musicians, but so did the Beatles (who plays lead guitar on While My Guitar Gently Weeps?) with all of the strings and assorted instruments, keyboards (Billy Preston being the first "officially" acknowledged addition) throughout the years. Even in Brian's studio musician period, at times Carl was known to still plug right into the board and add lead guitar and Dennis, drumming too.

  • @jackstpaul

This is brilliant, I agree.. but who's playing? not the beach boys. the Beatles has George Martin, but they did everything else, most every instrument... Imagine Brian producing the Beatles? too many egos I'd guess..

  • at 3:15, magic starts...

  • Incredible...What a talent !

  • A glimpse into the process of making a great record. Thanks for posting.

  • Brian listens to the other musicians suggestions for the song, and incorporates them into the final tune.

  • That was better than coffee.

  • Absolute gold. Thanks for posting!

  • Gold
