Depends on what you want. Your baseline one will get you through if you just want a regular computer (that's the one I have). If you want a machine that's going to be able to handle games, that'll be more. If you want Blu-Ray, same thing. You can build and tweak it as much and as little as you want on Dell's website to get the exact one you want.

Yeah, if you want thing, this is probably not the laptop to get. That said I wouldn't say it that much thicker than a Macbook Pro, and it's definitely not as wise. If you're looking for thinner though, the Dell XPS M1530 is probably for you.

Just measured it--at it's thinnest, it's about 1 inches thick, and at it's thickest it's a little less than two. Not too bad, it all depends on if you're gonna be lugging it around or not.

The speakers are okay, they're just a bit tin-ny and not too bass heavy. But I'm used to them now, and they get pretty loud as ell.

Its nice seeing all these dell studio videos popping up suddenly. Good review, I just ordered mine yesterday. I have one question though...what is the range on the wireless media remote? Would it work on two opposite sides of a house?

I didn't get a remote with mine (again, Staples, though I hear other people got a remote), but I don't think the range would be quite that large.

Just got the Studio 17. Actually a replacement. The first one shipped had 2 assembly defects.. There were humps in the keyboard, mousing didn't work, and fan ran from the instant it was powered up.

I love it so far. Same processor as yours. I maxxed out the ram and got Office pre-installed. The backlit keyboard is sweet! Especially when in the bed with the lights off. It has the fingerprint reader, but I deem it useless. I'm coming from an Inspiron 8100.
