I ended up here yesterday cos the black signs directing HGVs to Engine Shed Lane fail to mention the 13 foot bridge that I can't get under, this driver did a great job getting out, I bottled it and went up another road and spun round, hats off to him I say. Call me stupid all you like I've been in the game 25 years driving all over the UK and Western Europe, and I've heard it all. I still get into situations I wish I hadn't as experienced as I am I'm not afraid to admit it!!

What actually surprises me is that no car driver tries to force there way through, they all sit patiently( cant imagine this happening if it was to happen in London or indeed any where in the home counties)
Skipton is not the best place for long trailers. People are usually unaware of how much skill is involved in doing anything other than driving something this size in a straight line. I always allow room and time for lorries to turn. Sadly a lot of others don't.Good on him for a job done well. There isn't really much you can do anyway once you've committed. I'm surprised there isn't a huge queue of cars behind him, with no space for anyone to manouver.
Well, this video has shown me one thing: when I go on my working holiday to the UK next year, I will not consider truck driving for work. Australian cities are bad enough; that looks like a bloody nightmare. Definitely a round of applause for the driver though!
@embsay....do you hold a valid hgv class 1 or 2 licence??? i doubt it as you would of realised the skill involved and the not to mention you need excellent obsvervation skills also. He was clearly taking it easy as there where loads of people on the pavement. its not just a case of looking forward you have to watch your lenth width and high. if there had been a passer by with an hgv licence walking past im sure he would of helped him out and been his eyes on the floor.
iv'e seen worse. like the same kinda lorry making a sharp right angled bend in a town center. mind you it was a main road, and it would be the first time.
the drivers tend to miscalculate the angle a it is so tight, but i have seen one driver do it properly, which was weird.

As someone who has a licence to drive trucks of different sizes all I can say is that I am glad I do nto have to drive in these sort of towns, with very narrow streets and streets that have not been planned properly for delivery trucks.

@zzzzz31a Don't know if you've been to Skipton or not, but this is a deceiving little bastard, on the approach it looks like you could get a 747 round till you try it, it doesn't help that you can't hug the kerb on the other side cos of the metal posts in the way, I actually did go up a road opposite and got spun round but only cos a local bloke said it was ok, if it's your first time in a town you wouldn't have that info.
well thats great. i live in skipton that round-a-bout is damaged like every week. they shouldn't be on the high street its banned and this is the reason. + if you know the area you would realise they are attempting to turn the full way around which also if you lived there you would know not to do that cause its impossible.

I have been a long haul truck driver for 32 years ( artic ) , i fail to see what he / she has done wrong .......it got round did it not ? People who can not drive an HGV have got no idea how much room this kind of truck needs .. 7.5 tons weight limit or not , you can use this road in artic for access / delivery . I deliver to shops in places like this so i know what kind of shit we have to put up with from the public, so why , why can the public not give us truckers a break ...
Skipton Town Council have signs erected on the main by-pass A65 for large vehicles going to a particular Industrial Area in the town. If you follow these signs you are directed via a route with a low bridge ! Yes I use maps and common sense but when the Local Council direct large vehicles on a route they can't even use they have no option but to navigate parts of the town they had no intention of using. As usual some 'Coucil office desk jockey' who has no idea about anything was asked to plan it

I've driven round that roundabout a few times in an artic and it is tight, If remember rightly it got demolished by a coach and the council have rebuilt it bigger so its even more awkward now, plus the high street is now a 7.5 tonne limit, anyhow he or she got the outfit round without any damage or injury so whats the problem?, just remember all the truck drivers last winter that battled through the snow and ice to keep the shelves full of food in the shops !!!

I can sympathise with the driver. not every delivery is just off a motorway junction- and times like this is where you earn your money and why its not "Just sat there steering" like many think it is.
Have any of you ever driven one of these...you have to have a physical sense of the total rig and continue to plan and manuver these beasts on the roads and small streets...yes sometimes you have to get it where others say no...but delivery schedule says yes...your job is to deliver and make it happen...without accidents. The local councils should be blamed for this, the councils are great at putting up 7.5 ton weight limits but do not suggest a more suitable route for an lgv. Most of the time they don't bother with signage and let clueless car drivers and pedestrians do nothing but moan about being held up by an lgv which maybe delivering the item that your on way to the shop to buy. No trucks = empty shops.
Dunno how anyone can say driving a truck is hard, easiest way to 30k+ i can think of, just sitting around on your ass all day, you could train a monkey to do it.

I did my HGV driving test in Skipton, many years ago, and that was one of the roundabouts we used regularly.
Shame the camera driver didn't do as good a job as the truck driver. If he drove on the road, wobbling all over the place like that (almost made me feel seasick) he be stopped on suspicion of drink driving. ;-}

Again another video from some one who knows nothing about HGV's i pull a 65ft trailer my total length is 74ft even with my rear steer on i doubt even i could have made that turn even if i did use the citroen as a chock.
@alfaclass1 i come under STGO Cat 3 reg's my trailer is a 5 axle king low loader maximum wieght with double axle dolly 150 ton my combination is 74ft we have longer trailers the strechered trailers can go upto 85ft on thier own making the combination 98ft in length
I've driven that roundabout myself in an artic , and trust me its VERY tight, to get round it in one you need to use every inch of space available, and if you don't (which is almost guaranteed if you have never seen it before) you have to do what this driver was doing, and he / she was doing it very well too. I'm afraid the only stupid thing in this video is the person adding the title to it, sadly it just shows your lack of knowledge about what's required to drive this vehicle.
@marcr69r It would have helped if the public had brains & cleared the pavements. my dad had to negotiate a roundabout like this not only with an artic but with his LWB Heavy recovery ERF E14 dragging it round. Flashing amber lights on the roof & a train horn seemed to clear the pavements for him thoe.

I was in a business park last week and i was watching a woman in a car attempting to reverse around the corner... she went up the kerb..... FAIL.. it was pretty tight as parked cars were present.
Only 5 minutes later a big artic done the same reverse and made it look easy.
Councils love putting in these high kerbed mini roundabouts in everywhere, but the driver still didn't damage it, so fairplay to him, but can you count how many helpfull skipton town folk offered to help him
Skipton is an old town not designed for huge trucks like this! I know this route and it doesn't give any signs to warn HGV drivers especially long HGV's and trucks can't go left here at this roundabout. Driver did well to get around.

Shitty ornamental roundabouts! This guy *can* drive. The town planners should think about trucks when they sit down and say "wouldn't it be nice to stick a tree in the middle of the road" put a damn trucker on the road design panel and a lot of these problems wouldn't occur. Its a different story when foreign truckers, taking shortcuts, get stuck and cause mayhem. Maybe that is what the poster of this vid was alluding to?

@zzzzz31a Don't know if you've been to Skipton or not, but this is a deceiving little bastard, on the approach it looks like you could get a 747 round till you try it, it doesn't help that you can't hug the kerb on the other side cos of the metal posts in the way, I actually did go up a road opposite and got spun round but only cos a local bloke said it was ok, if it's your first time in a town you wouldn't have that info.

well thats great. i live in skipton that round-a-bout is damaged like every week. they shouldn't be on the high street its banned and this is the reason. + if you know the area you would realise they are attempting to turn the full way around which also if you lived there you would know not to do that cause its impossible.

Skipton Town Council have signs erected on the main by-pass A65 for large vehicles going to a particular Industrial Area in the town. If you follow these signs you are directed via a route with a low bridge ! Yes I use maps and common sense but when the Local Council direct large vehicles on a route they can't even use they have no option but to navigate parts of the town they had no intention of using. As usual some 'Coucil office desk jockey' who has no idea about anything was asked to plan it

I've driven round that roundabout a few times in an artic and it is tight, If remember rightly it got demolished by a coach and the council have rebuilt it bigger so its even more awkward now, plus the high street is now a 7.5 tonne limit, anyhow he or she got the outfit round without any damage or injury so whats the problem?, just remember all the truck drivers last winter that battled through the snow and ice to keep the shelves full of food in the shops !!!

Have any of you ever driven one of these...you have to have a physical sense of the total rig and continue to plan and manuver these beasts on the roads and small streets...yes sometimes you have to get it where others say no...but delivery schedule says yes...your job is to deliver and make it happen...without accidents. The local councils should be blamed for this, the councils are great at putting up 7.5 ton weight limits but do not suggest a more suitable route for an lgv. Most of the time they don't bother with signage and let clueless car drivers and pedestrians do nothing but moan about being held up by an lgv which maybe delivering the item that your on way to the shop to buy. No trucks = empty shops.

I did my HGV driving test in Skipton, many years ago, and that was one of the roundabouts we used regularly.
Shame the camera driver didn't do as good a job as the truck driver. If he drove on the road, wobbling all over the place like that (almost made me feel seasick) he be stopped on suspicion of drink driving. ;-}

I've driven that roundabout myself in an artic , and trust me its VERY tight, to get round it in one you need to use every inch of space available, and if you don't (which is almost guaranteed if you have never seen it before) you have to do what this driver was doing, and he / she was doing it very well too. I'm afraid the only stupid thing in this video is the person adding the title to it, sadly it just shows your lack of knowledge about what's required to drive this vehicle.

Flashing amber lights on the roof & a train horn seemed to clear the pavements for him thoe.

Skipton is an old town not designed for huge trucks like this! I know this route and it doesn't give any signs to warn HGV drivers especially long HGV's and trucks can't go left here at this roundabout. Driver did well to get around.

Shitty ornamental roundabouts! This guy *can* drive. The town planners should think about trucks when they sit down and say "wouldn't it be nice to stick a tree in the middle of the road" put a damn trucker on the road design panel and a lot of these problems wouldn't occur. Its a different story when foreign truckers, taking shortcuts, get stuck and cause mayhem. Maybe that is what the poster of this vid was alluding to?
