horice andy was the perfect man for this tune, massive succeed again with what can only be describe as an great track mezzinine one of the best albums of all time.
@howied27 wow, lets get big on the internet by... asking for a thumbs up on a comment? is that what you do? it's a way to find out if people agree with me. so, go get some friends and stop hating on the net.
I find this one inspiring above all else. It does not rush the build, it creates an unsettling and captivating mood with seductive vocals before increasing pace and tension. It brings something powerful to the mind, hence the title Angel. The video is interesting but I find it irrelevant to the music.
I think the moral of the story are problems. When the man was just leaving his car just one man was following him. As he walked faster the man behind him walked faster. Eventually more men (symbolizing problems in his life) begin to appear. Eventually the man being chased runs and the men behind him chases him while running just as fast and accumulating more men until he's cornered and the men chasing him stops. He eventually chases them, signifying that he chose to face his problems.
@HeliosFire9ll very well, but what about the lyrics of this song? I'm afraid that the text has nothing to your story. Thus: your interpretation is off! Sooorrry
I laughed out loud when I read some of these comments, most of them desperately trying to tie the song's title to the video's theme. Let me settle this now: they are not connected. While some people here have made some good arguments, the connection is tenuous. The song and the videos make different points. Song = someone with a tremendous amount of power over common men, akin to that of an angel. Video = overpower your fears by facing them.
the one thing we fear is the only guarentee we have in our lives from the minute we are born and living.. death is the inevitable. one should never fear the inevitable..

What challenges us makes us who we are. Our enemies are our friends. Our darkest demons can become our better angels, if only we look them dead in the eyes, and say "I am not afraid".
When you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.
@AnotherMasterMind Actually this song is about love and people we love. What they mean to us and how they change us, give us strength to face our fears and tackle our problems.
You can't only listen or watch Massive Attack. You must both listen and watch. Other bands tell the same with both video and song. In MA's case they compliment each other.

@4evamusic4life thats very true. i was an ameteur boxer for several years and also trained in muay thai, but i remember clearly the people at school who were absolutely terrified when confronted by bullies, who were usually low self-esteem people with poor character anyway.

The moral of this video is that we all have personal "demons". Once we confront them, they lose their "boogeyman" status and we can then begin to live as we should.
At 4:15, the main character decides that he no longer wants to run away from the crowd. He turns around to face his pursuers and make a personal stand against them (i.e. confronting his personal demons).
At 4:32, one of the pursuers does a head tilting gesture out of curiosity / intrigue that the chased individual has now stopped to confront them. Sort of baffled as to why the main character has stopped fleeing them.
At 4:53, the main character takes a single step towards the crowd.
Sort of a visual touchstone that some of the main character's personal demons may not be so malevolent after all ... he may have made them out to be more worse than they actually are.
At 2:49, we see the sign "EXIT - Stop - Proceed With Caution". Once again, this is almost an allusion or warning for the main character to abandon his egress of leaving his personal Hell / demons behind.
At 3:02, he makes it to the street level and "freedom" ... albeit with the stalkers in close pursuit.
You'll also notice that the first individual that follows the main character in this video, indeed is the potential angel.
Shadowing the main character in possibly a protective manner.
Interesting observation: the main character gets out of a British vehicle (steering wheel on the right) while said "angel" emerges from an American / Western vehicle (steering wheel on the left). And this vid having been shot in the U.K.,it is a subtle allusion that this character (angel) is extraordinary.
That is a distinct possiblility. Sort of an icon of grace amongst the multitudes of said demons.
Or ... it could represent a portion of his life which he may have attributed a negative connotation to, however, it wasn't as it appeared to be.
Sort of a nagging regret over something that wasn't meant to be. Possibly a failed relationship that was detrimental to his well-being or some other dysfuntional encounter / pursuit that he's never forgiven himself for.
At the 5:13 mark in this video, do you think that the multitude of the crowd has been enhanced by CGI, or do you think that the director of this video actually recruited several thousand people to act as extras?
Did Massive Attack put the word out (possibly to their U.K. fan club) that they were shooting a video and needed extras to be included in it for a crowd scene but to show up in the darkest clothing they owned (without logos on the clothes /etc.)?
This video is about a dude running... stop making things up to make yourself look like an intellectual or something. Roll a joint and listen to the music.
I am angry at you!!!Be careful!! And what if God Gives you a test for angels, not humans, not saints, but ANGELS because you are tripping around???BE careful, this is the age of Fire!
Do you have an angelic powers maybe,or you are just dreaming?Don't be a shizo,be real, angels are not made, they ARE!!!!Saints maybe, but angels......have you met one?If you did,you would know what i am talking about!!!
Or maybe it is just a great video.........you MUST stay real,so if you can't HEAL the humanity you are NOT an angel,at least not yet,so have fun and stop being so dramatic about it!You will have your moment, don't you worry!!!!RELAX!!!!!!!!
The "People" chasing after him are not really people, they are his angels, and before he realizes this, he grows more fear and that's why more angels come to his aid. They can comfort him but cannot interfere, they cannot touch him or let him touch them, that's why they need to always keep the same distance and have to start running the opposite way when he goes after them.
and joins them back to his mind. The people could also represent his fears or his subconscious. So he conquered fear by facing it. "The only thing to fear is fear itself"
In that same frame we see three numbers sparyed on the bright side were the "Traffic on..." sing is. This is another reference to his rational thinking. Theres one symbol that i dont get. The "Ross" or "Rcss" spray painted on the wal, with one side pointing back at his rational mind in white and the other further away from his thinking is red . I don't get what the letters mean though, they could just be a distraction to the arrows. He stops and realizes that he cannot run away from them
The camera reveals the "stop" and proceed with caution" sing next to the exit sign, because he has left his thinking space and now is using Fight-or-flight response. We also see the camera stay still on a sing that says "Give Way To Traffic On Left & Right", meaning his right and left parts of the brain. We also see an arrow pointing back to the "headroom" (his rational mind) another reference to his mind is the red light, connecting to the signs "stop" and "proceed with caution".
I will have to say this is one of the best music videos ive seen and the song is superb. If Stanley Kubric would still be alive I'd say he made this video. I say that because of the way its shot, the signs say everything. When hes in the parking lot theres two sings that say "headroom" meaning that we are in his in his mind thinking that they are after him, then it shows the exit sing meaning he exited his mind and now is taking action by running so the people start chasing him.
The meaning of this video for me is simple - when you face your fears, when you realize them truly as a part of you - they weaken, cause they're nothing than reflection of yourself - scared, anxious to do something but struggling with ideas what people around you would think.
As a final note here, from 4:46 to 4:48, if you'll watch closely, you will notice that the "benign" stalker from 2:37 (who stopped and sang the song's refrain), gives a slight smile of acknowledgement to the main character.
Almost sort of a glimmer of recognition or nod of approval to the lead character that he has finally realized that he no longer needs to run from his problems, but to stand confidently in his personal resolve to face down his issues
Overcoming fear of that proportion makes you grow wings, hence the title "Angel".
But overcoming fear is not always such a spiritual experience that qualifies for "Angel". It depends on how great your sacrifice is.
Thus i think this videoclip is about a specific fear, the fear of death. To overcome that you need to let go of your life. And if you survive that, you will walk as an "Angel".
What we see here, is how an ordinary man evolves into an angel.
@Repulver People watch so attentively, they forget to listen...
As for this particular video, however, I agree with you, even though I generally try to look at music videos as just another interpretation of the music, and often little more than something for the eyes to look at while one is listening to a song.
@Repulver...two years ago I nearly died in a motorcycle accident. The experience changed me in that I no longer fear death like I once did. The experience, though traumatic and painful was in the end an experience that allowed me to escape and conquer my fears.
@splang88 nice, thank you for sharing that. I had a similar experience about 20 years ago, i nearly drowned in a river. It was high water and i got into a whirl. When i was totally exhausted and knew i was gonna die, i stoped fighting and released my existence. Then the whirl spat me out somehow and i was on the top again.
I quickly forgot the whole thing and went back in. What i learned is, even when your not in controll you can still smile. And that smile shows you a door.
@Repulver Thanks man, I can really relate to the door. Being able to walk through that door and no longer fear death for me is liberating in many ways.

I like Repulver's interpretation actually, but I think the message is simple.
That, the world will dominate us if we let it.
How, we're all wage-slaves.. and that we can't do anything without making money, yknow?
And we just make money to spend it..
But the second you take things into your own hands.. become altruistic, gain a will to act, ' take the bull by it's horns '.. the world is yours.
Don't agree with me?
It's okay. I'll shut the fuck up and enjoy the song, regardless.

Multiple ideas.

Final question / observation ...

He stops and realizes that he cannot run away from them
street312punk 1 year ago

Hey dude ... Thanks for plagiarizing MY comment on this video and passing it off as YOURS.
Word for word. And I posted it over a month ago.
C'mon man. At least you could have given me a shout out or mentioned that it was penned by me.
Though, it is a bit of a compliment for you to have found what I wrote to be so effectual, however, doing so without acknowledgement is a no no. OK?
Next time give credit where credit is due.
Now go back to enjoying this great video.

@Repulver.
Excellent interpretation. What most people lose is the lyrics.
musikvgen 1 year ago
@Repulver People watch so attentively, they forget to listen...
As for this particular video, however, I agree with you, even though I generally try to look at music videos as just another interpretation of the music, and often little more than something for the eyes to look at while one is listening to a song.

@Repulver...two years ago I nearly died in a motorcycle accident. The experience changed me in that I no longer fear death like I once did. The experience, though traumatic and painful was in the end an experience that allowed me to escape and conquer my fears.
splang88 1 year ago
@splang88 nice, thank you for sharing that. I had a similar experience about 20 years ago, i nearly drowned in a river. It was high water and i got into a whirl. When i was totally exhausted and knew i was gonna die, i stoped fighting and released my existence. Then the whirl spat me out somehow and i was on the top again.
I quickly forgot the whole thing and went back in. What i learned is, even when your not in controll you can still smile. And that smile shows you a door.
