fantastic record, cant believe it never took off in usa. two georgous babes dancing away there. this used to be playing almost continuously on the jukebox at the youth club in st.neots hunts in the early 70s.brill...
@cozener1 lol, you could alway tell it was them. they never sounded quite hungry or dirty enough, especially on the uptempo numbers, and they were always seemed one tiny fraction too slow or behind the beat and generally conflicted...
i always imagined them as a bunch of slightly stiff dudes, desperately trying to work out how to really let loose without seeming improper or being accused of immorality.
@cozener1 Oh God, even worse - but even funnier! I can well and truly believe that - whether they were giving it 100% or not, you can just tell none of this Top of the Poppery was really their favourite thing...
This brought back memories, it was a shame that it crossed over into mainstream though. It was much much better hearing it at The Wheel...wonderful to hear again nonetheless.
Its my birthday today and my kids are asleep.I am watching and listening to this song in the peace and quite of my room it brings back so many childhood memories.Thank you for uploading .What a good start to my day!!.
im glad you all enjoy this song so much. this woman is my grandmother, and yes, she is truly talented. you can still catch her performing in new york.
It's a pity Tami Lynn had only one hit here in the UK, it was in summer 1971 when this was in the charts here and it was one of my favourites of that time and I bought the single. It's great to know that she is still performing. This track seems to be forgotten here, it's a pity as it is so wonderful and uplifting.
@jetjaz Look in the background at 1:00, there's the orchestra! Also this sounds different from the version on the record. Tami is seriously more talented than the bimbos presently singing in the Eurovision Contest.
@flairbird1965 - On Top of the Pops it was usually live vocals over a pre-recorded backing track. The BBC wouldn't let the original recording be used by artistes performing in the studio. Remember when Francis Rossi appeared with Status Quo & he fell backwards into the drum kit & the music carried on playing?

Actually, that might be a bit unfair ... they capture the sound *pretty* well, it's no "Uptown Top Ranking", but the "why don't I run away and hide?" bit jars ... they've got the chords wrong and it damages the feel. I hate myself for writing the above.
is the drummer drunk ?

@DaveBTHunt I remember reading somewhere that most of them hated doing TOTP and were often worse for wear after a lunchtime in the pub!

Great song and great singer indeed, but I don't think Johnny Pearson and his orchestra *quite* got it.
