I loved Jackie Gleason as a kid on his TV shows. And occasionally caught his movies. He is talented. And thanks for the comments and insight. And for the movie itself.
The film (and certainly Gleasons' role) might have taken on a completely different twist had Jackie gotten his way. Originally, he wanted his good friend Orson Welles to direct the film. The studio heads voted against it. Their reason? He spent too much money and didn't finish his pictures within reasonable time constraints. So, instead "the powers that be" decided upon Gene Kelly. And though Kelly himself was unhappy with the finished product, overall I think he did an excellent job.
Interesting comparison since I kept thinking about how Chaplin must have reacted to this movie. I personally think that Gigot is proof that Gleason has beaten Chaplin at pathos.
Why did he become mute ? He is wearing a soldiers cap and great coat. Was he tramatuzed in the great war ?

He has so little yet loves those that society may not notice. What an example to follow.

in all fairness, this was Jackie's omage To Chaplin's "the Kid". this movie is sad yet sweet and will be remembered as one of the top movies made.
