  • We'll never know the true story for certain but the fact that the hand written date is the same writing as the author of the music and could have been written in any time. Before or after the copyright stamp. Could have been an honest mistake by Ervin or the true date but it's not conclusive. - it also looks like the 7 was changed from a 3 - Either way its a great song and everyone knows Ervin T Rouse is part of it.- Is there a video of Ervin playing OBS?

  • Ervin Rouse is my great uncle on my father's side and I was so disappointed that this special interviewed an old girlfriend instead of his wife or children. As for C. Wise, this song was copyrighted by Ervin before they even met and Leon Pappy Selph did not write it either, thank you. Ervin Rouse was not a one hit wonder....he wrote many songs which shows his amazing talent.

  • @jewelswhitehurst if thats true we are related cause ervin rouse was my great great uncle:D

  • FASCINATING! I'm going to share this with MY FRIENDS! Keep circulating the Good Word! 0=)

something in particular that strikes me...with technology, I wonder how many other hidden geniuses we are Yet to Uncover?

  • In actuality - Leon "Pappy" Selph wrote the Orange Blossom Special. I had the privilege and honor of performing with Pappy before his death in Houston. Pappy died of cancer a few years back. What was so sad is that Pappy never copyrighted it - he needed the money to stay in the YMCA while he was on tour. This is really a sad day in country music when a talent is not recognized for his work - nor did he make a dime for it.

  • i really doubt you have a more reliable source. That woman was one of the sweetest, caring, God fearing christians i have ever met! I will believe her before some guy on youtube. She had no reason to lie. Chubby did her wrong, left her. If anything she would say he lied about the song just for the fact of the way he treated her. But she to;d the truth. That's what she did!

  • My husband is the great grandson of Chubby Wise. His grandma didn't have issues with alcoholism and she stood behind Chubby's story until she died. She was the only other person there (Jacksonville FL)when they went out that night and came back with the song. She made them breakfast that morning.

  • @Ambercothran chubby lied about writing this song for 50 years. what a disgrace. stealing another mans work. thank god chubby will be forgotton long after rouse's song remains.

  • I learned this tune back in the early 1980s from fiddler Homer "Pappy" Sherrill, who told me that he learned it directly from Ervin Rouse back in the late 1930s when they played some radio shows together in SC, NC, and Virginia. Pappy said that Ervin wrote the tune.

  • I live next to a man who recorded this song in 1938 for RCA....Before Ervin..He learned it directly from Ervin in Asheville NC that year and told me Chubby Wise never wrote any of it....

  • Chubby Wise had issues with alcoholism too. He may well have collaborated on the tune but got fuzzy on dates and exact circumstances.

  • Got to get the book on this, it is great! "Fiddler's Curse" by Randy Noles.

  • Great song

  • So cool - my man's brother Randy Noles narrated and wrote the book on the Orange Blossom Special. Much Love - I didn;t get to see this on TV, and just found it today looking for Luke Nole's NASA video. - Awesome footage of Chubby Wise!
