  • NOt pro lesson especially when i learnt by ear in 5mins

  • hey dude ,cold you tell me what is up and downbeat in a simple way?????

  • lolwut? i play this song all on the E string xD dude, too complicated

  • I can hardly hear the bass.

  • just because you know so much doesn't mean you can teach !!!! why do people have to over emphasize and complicate things. and for god's sakes slow down !!!!!!

  • what is the EQ setting of your bass amp?

  • are u scottish?

  • Thanks for the lesson? By the way, is that a Finnish accent you have?

  • Both Thumps Up Thnx First Song I Leaned To Play (^.^) Hope You Make More (^.^)

  • Good video, funny comment with these little girls, made me do a lol :-)

  • good job dave...you video will give the beginners a basis to work on...niceee...

for all those who think they are better or know a lot more... go get a life or make a video...as long as you get the sound and notes right, i think that is good enough....technique is something you will develop on your own...its music anyway....there's no wrong or right technique basically.....

  • @SuperBisul Unfortunately, friend, music is full of "right" and "wrong" answers. This music is the music of a culture that this guy is clearly not from. Rather than giving that culture the respect of learning how they play their music, this guy seems to think he's so great that he can learn it all by himself off records AND I guess he's just so great that he can give the rest of us lessons. I find that arrogant and disrespectful. And the point is - Caribbean people should be teaching this music.

  • @yourmanwatson I understand your point of view, but it's too narrow for me to share. Music is art, notes, math, emotion, theory - but theory is not fact. Theory is conjecture, hypothesis, guesses to be proven or dis-proven. His lesson is about bass notes - not a sermon on how to love Jah or live as rasta. If he'd not talked or showed his face or hands during this lesson, would you have questioned his cultural background? Seek other lessons if you are offended.

  • @dripgoss ...remember George Orwell's 1984? ...remember how they did away with the word "bad" in that story? Well in the real world, they weren't able to do away with the word itself so they just made it so saying anything even vaguely critical at anytime makes you a "hater".. No matter how constructive your intentions are.

  • @dripgoss Oh.. and for the record. The ONLY reason I bring up his culture is because he doesn't know how to play the genre. Not the other way around. Take it from me - I'm white and I've played reggae in Jamaica. Also - while we're talking cultural stereotypes - most Jamaicans are not Ratsa. And playing music correctly has nothing to do with personal spiritual beliefs.

  • @yourmanwatson this guy probably plays better then you. even if he doesn't you're still a dick.

  • @prometheusjohnson This was my original comment: "There is no muted picking in reggae bass. That's a very common mistake. What you're hearing on many Reggae recordings is a muted guitar playing along with the bass..

No offence, I'm sure you're a great player. Just been playing this genre most of my life.. So I thought I'd offer some advice :)"

And that makes me such a horrible person that I've had people insulting me for 6 months now????

What the fuck is wrong with you people??

  • @prometheusjohnson This guy posted the video - I have the right to express my opinion about it. I did so in the most diplomatic way possible.

So what the fuck is your fucking problem, you stupid douche bag little bitch?

  • @yourmanwatson the most diplomatic way you could think of expressing your opinion made you sound like a dick, your reaction to being called a dick made you sound even more like a dick, and im guessing that if you respond to this youll do it in a dick-ish manner as well. so i dont even have a problem, your the one with the problem.

  • @prometheusjohnson Well as much as I'd love to trade insults with you. I have better shit to do with my life. Enjoy.

  • @'prometheusjohnson' and 'yourmanwatson'....I don't understand people like you, who have to play the insult game for seemingly pathetic reasons. What ever happened to civility? It's just so damned immature to poke at eachother, especially for the lamest of reasons!

  • @jroach96 well we cant al be good semaritans...

  • @prometheusjohnson Hey, my friend...I watched some of your other stuff too, and you've got it goin' on! I'm a long time seasoned player too...best wishes to ya! J-Ro

  • thanks dave

  • ps: i dont even play drums as u can tell by my user name

  • what the fuck are these shite comments all about??? dave you are a ledge an a DAMN good teacher!!!

  • about feeling?

  • hey man could you please help me about on this can u send me some notes ... thanks a lot..^^ send me tabs too ty.. my email.. padillo_itfnds@yahoo.com thanks a lot..^^

  • i don't know english, and if you could give me a tablature, you will make me happy :D (Excuse me for errors)

  • I can't believe you got even one negative comment. You're the BEST bassist on youtube and possibly the world.

  • hey man! thanks! just what i'm need.

    from Argentina,

    Cheli

  • Cheers, great breakdown. very helpfull.

  • I dont play bob marley songs cos im against drugs. amazing bass playing btw.

  • @capocchiate Are you against illegal drugs and legal drugs? and why would being against drugs permit you from playing stir it up? trust me, you won't be struck with the sudden urge to inject heroin, actually, you might enjoy playing it, as much as you would enjoy smoking a spliff ( alohough, you'll never know).

  • @TheSpamFilter i was just kiddin, when im stoned i love to write silly comments to youtube videos. long life to vapor brothers.

  • @capocchiate drugs aren't the message ... Love is! You aren't against that, are you?

  • heres a quick lasson

  • Fender P american standard?

  • @Futil3

    P? It's clearly a J.

  • @MajorImpact

    :S yes clearly..Sorry i don't play a fender

  • I was listening to the song, Im not sure how to play this during the verse, any suggestions?

  • Nice job!

    Thx man

  • i can do it with my dick.

  • Ya he is missing notes

  • he's missing two notes. its right just missing two notes.

  • I dont see anything wrong with that...He is just hitting the right notes people...

  • yes he is wrong !! listen the bass line!! have more notes

  • WRONG

  • Sorry, alexalexay, but you're wrong. I am a classically trained musician (not just bass, also horns, piano, winds, and strings of all kinds). He's right. Trust me.

  • ist the A string out of tune, thats why it sounds strange.

  • Oh please give the guy some positive vibe..why so rude...he plays what he hear...post you version ...instead of some insults..

  • sorry dude, bass isn't exactly right, i'm a Jamaican musician , but not bad though, but i think you should listen to the bass again

  • I learned this song by accident. I played the notes in the key of A, like a scale. THen i though, "wow, this sounds familiar." so i altered a few of the notes, and bam i had the bass line.

  • wrong.

  • saaven ahhaha

  • hokay so

  • this is the earth :)

  • ty dave i know how 2 play stir it up now

  • wat bass r u using??

  • fender marcus miller dude

  • This was one of the first songs i learned on bass bob marley is amezing :)

  • yes i think most of the lesson here on youtube are really confusing, but for example shawn cheek explains really good beacuse of his method : )

  • you keep excluding a note at the end of the chorus.. just fyi. Sounds good though

  • i play it without sliding up 2 frets. flows better

watch Bob Marley in 1979 Santa Barbara and you will see how it really played

  • I agree with you, except it's easier to teach the tune with the sliding.

  • the way you explained it is very confusing

  • bird is the word!

  • Comment removed

  • damn good tip on the reggae vibe. thank you sir

  • thanks

  • yah its muddy as hell

  • I'm sorry man, but you need to turn the volume up on the amp. The bass can barely be heard, imo. Otherwise, good lesson.

  • please play the song through in the beginning then show us how to do it helps a lot

  • What kind of bass is that

  • I think American Standard Jazz Bass. :)

  • It's a fender Marcus Miller signature Jazz.

They make em in japanese and american version I think.

  • cool bass dude : DD

  • this is good.

  • sorry but id find it easier trying to learn from tab.. its the way i learn bass i guess..

  • learening by ear is moe help fun

you get a own feeling to the song

start fromeasy songs then work your way up

  • Actually learning technique is more helpful...unless all u want to do is cover songs your entire life.

  • if you listen to the original stir it up you will notice that the first note is G# instead of A.

i guess the wailers where to stoned to notice whuhahahaha

  • can you put some vids of kings of leon i love the sound of their bass

  • dude this is so not pro!

  • What makes you say that? the information is correct and he sounds fine playing? It's a simple song, great for a beginner lesson. Kinda seems like you are just going out of your way to be nasty. Put up a better video if you know how to do it better.

  • great

  • Davemarks you are great my brother! go ahead and share your knowledge with us,never mind those low-minded.By the way whats your Website called?

  • you should REALLY turn the volume on your bass up.

  • lol

i messed my bass amp up

so now i play without bass

so my ears r like trained to hear propper quiet bass'

  • @Killzorbotron now you no musician i bet. so dont FUCKING call someone a DICKHOLE while you dont know what hes trying to teach. lemme fresh this up for ya'll flamers thinking bass = no thumb.

    now even wooten uses thumb

    watch?v=iF4GYZECVKE

    watch?v=CEanwbWcDpc

    watch?v=wkQ5Uk0VfQg

    yes/no? fuck off

The palm on the strings and playing with a thumb sounds like the acoustic upright bass ( its an effect )OK!!, he can say if im correct or not. but from what i saw that is what hes trying to teach.

  • Ne ways keep up the good work, cuz peeps like him talk smak but dont got the balls to try teaching peeps stuff ;) i might go with a base.

what i do is get these tabs on my guitar and combine it with the strumming :D

  • use ur thumb for slap and pop mate ;) not for normal playing though

  • using the thumb is a standard reggae technic.

  • i was replying to someone else

  • for sure that guy is a twat. i mean why be so hostel isn't bass suppose to be a cool lade back instrument.

  • Clear, easy and helpful lessons.

For someone with no cash and a willing to learn this guy can really help you. thanks Dave

The poor guy slagging you off is just a sad person who's a little frustrated with his life. Shame!

    Crack on Dave.

  • P.s. you are a twat.

  • Calm down man. This isn't a lesson on slap technique - it's muted thumb plucking. Ranting and using abusive language just makes you seem angry and childish.

  • @davemarks There is no muted picking in reggae bass. That's a very common mistake. What you're hearing on many Reggae recordings is a muted guitar playing along with the bass..

No offence, I'm sure you're a great player. Just been playing this genre most of my life.. So I thought I'd offer some advice :)

  • @yourmanwatson No rules my man. Only what sounds good and what don't.

  • @dripgoss Unfortunately for you, music is full of rules. I'm just trying to give this guy some hints on how to play reggae. It's a cultural genre - just like salsa or traditional Korean music - it would be respectful to try and learn how that culture plays their music BEFORE you give other people lessons in it. ...just saying.

  • @davemarks Good lesson otherwise though :)

  • Many of the best bassists have used their thumb to pluck notes. Do you play bass?

  • GREAT VID... THANK U

  • Dave. I'm just beginning with the a jazz bass. Your lessons are great. Keep it up!

    Vincent

  • This is the second day I've ever even tried to play a bass, and your lesson had me going within an hour. Thanks!

  • Lol il buy a bass just to play that song thats my favorite from Bob and i saw that is not harder then guitar hehe

  • Thank you for this video, it helped me a lot

  • and most bands do. one person does not write all the songs by themself. you obviously have no experience with writing music

  • man me just wanna to tell yuh wrong;] bless

  • bless

  • Vale la pena verlo!!

  • This video confused the hell out of me. I already knew the song, but I'm just not used to referring to my notes as numbered frets, but as the notes themselves.

  • Mmm.. with fretted instruments its best to learn the structure of chords then you wont have to worry about which notes to play when in whatever chords.

  • Agreed. When I first started playing bass, I went straight to tabs, and I had no idea where my G# was, or my A's, or B's. It was my biggest regret. But I took the time to learn where everything was, and its *a lot* easier.

  • Family man barrett is so sick check him out

  • thanks man this song is one of the reasons I recently chose to buy a bass and learn, it's awesome

  • I wasn't aware Bob Marley played bass ;)

  • he didnt

  • no shit

  • what are you talking about. its a Bob Marley song. he just used Bob's name to shorten it from B.M.W.

  • Family Man Barrett. Robbie Shakespeare. Ring any bells? They created and played these bass parts, not Bob Marley. Nor was it a collaboration with B.M. They did it; it's theirs; much of what you enjoy about the track is their contribution; credit is due. Get it?

If you were ACTUALLY interested in playing bass--being part of a lineage of great bassists--it is not much to ask to recognize the real names of bass players....is it?

  • no shit. It's the bands song, Bob Marley is shortened from BOB MARLEY & theWAILERS. There a BAND they write together. Bob's writes the lyrics, and usually the chords. all these songs were written by Bob on an acoustic when he showed them to the band they got to work.

  • Please reevaluate your concept of "band" in relation to Jamaican music, and the compositional and recording process of Jamaican music through the early 70s. Don't assume. Best, Ranzo.

  • a Band is a group of people who make music together. Mozart had a band. Snoop dog even has a damn band. The Wailers are a BAND

  • what? a band does not automatically constitute writing together. Mozart had a band? Your an idiot fvhgdh.

  • yeah jackass. each person played different notes in a chord and it all came together. its called and orchestra idiot

  • fvhgdh, Sorry. Get educated. Your fucking clueless as to how composers even write music. A band is one thing. A composer writes it all. Mozart was a composer. You do understand how pianos and guitars work right? Take a look at one of my guitar videos, Fu on you, I made it for people like you.

  • just shut up idiot. I compose music myself. I know more about music then you may. but anyway who cares I'll watch your vid and lets leave it at

    peace

  • Great video Dave. Thanks for inspiring beginners like me to learn more.

  • iuts really great man..

  • this is my favorite marley song

    u da man

  • Thank you very much for this video, it helped me a lot, especially in my bass playing. I'm now a solid fan of bob marley... More power to you.

  • don't mind the idiots that clutter youtube, you are doing great!

  • Thanks Dave for putting up with some of these Youtube idiots, The rest of us appreciate your help. This is a great lesson. Love the muting tip!

  • please post a video response with correct bassline...

  • haha...told!

  • easy mate chears so helpful thanks i not had my bass long and trying to show off to my little brother so thanks again.

  • I know you are great player, but to keep many of us wannabes to be interested first play the music and it will get me 'stirred up' to stay around and learn to play it. PLAY THE MUSIC/SONG FIRST THAT SHOULD GRAB ME.

  • @Ugotstogo

all you've got to do is type the name of the song on another youtube window. Not that hard, isn't it?

  • If u couldnt work this out i advise u quit bass

  • thank you!

  • i play exactly the same way as u do with the thumb etc but i found it by my own lol

  • hey dave, thanx for the lesson, has helped me a lot & also gives me the push to learn more reggae bass lines which i earlier thought were tough, but they really arent, and sound so good and also add variety to my bass playing style.thanx again

  • What kind of hair product?

  • This is so EASY!! You could just learn this yourself!!

  • ure the best man!

  • hi i am from croatia and i just want to thank you

  • THANK YOU

  • I noticed a bit of a problem. In the second half of the second bar of the main riff (i.e. E Maj triad) it sounds right, but when I listen to the album there are clearly four notes played, not just the three of the triad. I'm having a bit of trouble working it out myself and checking tabs online isn't helping it much either. Doubling the root E and going back to the D (and playing the B on 4th fret G string) both seem pretty common, but I'm having a lot of trouble trying to work it out myself.

  • i love how you tell which finger to put where

  • Great job, Ashton Barret would be proud

  • está muy educativo el video...

  • Nice vid

  • thats cool 2 thanks =)
