I love how all this subtly and righteously (in my opinion) undermines the overhyped seriousness of Ayn Rand. Philip K. Dick was a man who very well knew and used sarcasm as a gentle tool for social justice or just for fun.

The radio thing is actually a great way of tying in with the book's narration. Only the wine in the book cost $30 (inflation! :) ) and Freck was actually burned by his dealer and given psychedelics instead of barbiturates, hence the trip. But that's hardly worth the nitpicking. Great how they both stayed faithful with the book and gave the movie a certain freshness.

It's implied that Freck had a total breakdown after this scene, and that's why you see him in New Path (with a shaved head). Freck in the movie is a combination of Freck from the book and another character, Jerry Fabin, who has a minor part (the bugs).

I definitely recommend the book to people who liked the movie. Most of the dialogue is taken directly from the book, but some of the best scenes are missing.

In the book it explains this a bit better - he had been "burned" because the pills were sold to him as downers mixed with D, but instead they had hallucinogens in them (maybe the mushrooms Barris talks about in the book?) thus the hallucination.

A mysterious scene, I don't understand: why is it in the film? Did Freck die? Did he ever exist? Was Arctor in reality Freck? These are just a few questions and ambiguities that arise, if you start thinking carefully about the film.

Freck didn't die, you see him again later in the group therapy scene. I believe the scene is a sort of expression of the stress that the characters (and the rest of the people in this reality for that matter) are experiencing. Mostly, however, I think it's just for the sake of irony. Freck mostly exists to show extreme effects of drug use, particularly D.

Freck couldn't be Arctor because 80% of Freck's scenes involve him talking about Arctor with Barris. Those scenes wouldn't make any sense.
