I love how all this subtly and righteously (in my opinion) undermines the overhyped seriousness of Ayn Rand. Philip K. Dick was a man who very well knew and used sarcasm as a gentle tool for social justice or just for fun.
@Zeta9966 >> According to the commentary, they originally wanted to use Dick's actual narration from a radio interview where he recited this passage from the book. However, the recording wasn't a very good sound quality, so they used a sound alike actor.
The radio thing is actually a great way of tying in with the book's narration. Only the wine in the book cost $30 (inflation! :) ) and Freck was actually burned by his dealer and given psychedelics instead of barbiturates, hence the trip. But that's hardly worth the nitpicking. Great how they both stayed faithful with the book and gave the movie a certain freshness.
A couple nights ago I was listening to music while under the influence of 710 mgs of DXM and 20 mgs of Oxycodone. "rich girl" by Gwen Stefani came on and I believed I was in some version of hell where that song played non-stop for all of eternity.scary as fuck. that morning I went to saturday school while still under the influence, it was so messed up
this is more of a continuation than a response, but in the book it explains that he didn't die because he had intended O.D. on benzodiazepines, but his dealer had ripped him off and sold him a hallucinogen instead.
There's one thing that bothers me about A Scanner Darkly. What is the appeal of Substance D? Does it make you hallucinate like LSD or does it make you hallucinate like Salvia or DMT? Maybe even pyslocybin? If this kind of shit happens on D then why is there a 20% addiction rate?
@TheButcherClan That's the thing they've never really showed or described what are the effects of substance d thus making it universal for every drug and showing the slow death of mind.
It's implied that Freck had a total breakdown after this scene, and that's why you see him in New Path (with a shaved head). Freck in the movie is a combination of Freck from the book and another character, Jerry Fabin, who has a minor part (the bugs).
I definitely recommend the book to people who liked the movie. Most of the dialogue is taken directly from the book, but some of the best scenes are missing.
If you think about it, this is a terrifying scene. I mean think about it: Having every single sin you have ever commited read to you for all of eternity? Pretty scary stuff.
In the book it explains this a bit better - he had been "burned" because the pills were sold to him as downers mixed with D, but instead they had hallucinogens in them (maybe the mushrooms Barris talks about in the book?) thus the hallucination.
this scene was brilliant- i'd completely forgotten about it.
it's funny how so many of these scenes are wickedly good on their own, yet the movie is not equally good as a whole. at least for me. but then, some things are like that...
A mysterious scene, I don't understand: why is it in the film? Did Freck die? Did he ever exist? Was Arctor in reality Freck? These are just a few questions and ambiguities that arise, if you start thinking carefully about the film.
Freck didn't die, you see him again later in the group therapy scene. I believe the scene is a sort of expression of the stress that the characters (and the rest of the people in this reality for that matter) are experiencing. Mostly, however, I think it's just for the sake of irony. Freck mostly exists to show extreme effects of drug use, particularly D.
Freck couldn't be Arctor because 80% of Freck's scenes involve him talking about Arctor with Barris. Those scenes wouldn't make any sense.
@Makingnewnamesisdumb freck has been doing the drug for longer and more intensely than everyone else, so he has passed into the next stage of addiction, where most people havent been yet
These are just a few questions and ambiguities that arise if you happen to think about life. Your life. And then after a while, you are over that. Then you make a film, and raise a couple of other serious questions about life.
When that is done, life goes on. ..And something new about life is discovered. Something new that shall be used as a building block to stand upon.
In my humble opinion, it is because Youtube's logo (coincidentally, I'm sure) uses the exact same colors that appear on the Nazi flag: Red, white, and black.
you can see Reves charicter see him talking when he is in a group session in the "New Way". i always thought he did die. and that the image of Feck was a halusination in Reves mind as they were talking about the dead and the living. but i could be wronge as i have yet to find the book in my local chapters or indego.
In the book this scene is just described by what the radio voice is talking...i just want to say it's an ingeniuos move to make the narrator talk out of the radio...
"1000 years later they had reached the 6th grade the year he had discovered masturbation" wow 1000 years god damn im sure it will take triple that for me lol.
I want to write somethings of this on my last exam... Dick rules!!! alive in my desire of another lifestyle...
Another world jump off our reality... Double topic... like The Strange Case of Dt Jekyll and Mr Hyde or William Wilson of E.A.Poe. Bob Artor or Fred?(Arctor=Actor)
I wish I could act like Rory Cochrane. I always play the nut charackters (e.g. the dentist in the little shop of horrors), but the way this guy plays Freck is awesome!
