@f1ozzy Any interpretation of this poem that allows the message of this poem to reach an individual is fantastic. The poem commemorates not only the significance of these events but a general sentiment that goes along with it
Fuck football this poem was baased on the English soildures who died in the crimean war. I'm English with Russian heratige so this 'story' means alot to me. Poeple died in reality and i bet they didn't do it to be rememberd for a football game. i love this move but this scene is wrong.
We name countries with a capital letter: England, Italy Greece, America.
' I ment to say' should be 'I meant to say' and 'western europe ' Western Europe'. 'Theres countries'? 'There are countries'. There is (singular) there are (plural). Do you get the idea? If you can't write about a subject centred upon English Literature expressing an understanding of the basics of that language, you can't write with any conviction.
@Tw1St3DSt33L No I don't think so, i know theres countries like france and germany that made a translation for the title and the translation doesnt mean the blind side (probably because we don't have a translation for blindside in most european languages + its a football term and 99% of the people in europe dont know anything about american football)
@madjak007 im one of the very few rugby players in belgium actually ;) , in countries other than england and france rarely anyone knows what rugby or american football is so the same thing goes for that
"They're all gonna die, aren't they?" Well no they didn't, some yes, but it was a successful attack, they easily took out the artillery, and then fended off the russian counter-attack!....
After the battle the cannons were melted down into medals-Victoria Cross', to be awarded to men for valour and extreme courage, beyond that normally expected of a British soldier in face of the enemy. So yeah that scene was quite wrong.....
It is a poem about death, the death of the finest Light Cavalry Brigade ever to engage in 19th Century warfare as Americans Pickets Charge may well be the best comparison, a blind faith in duty to the bitter, bitter end.
FOR HONOUR, as the British Cavalry say, Death or Glory.
@xcaibur You'll find the British Cavalry doesn't say Death or Glory that is the motto of an infantry regiment. I'm currently serving in the Kings Royal Hussars which the 11th hussars amalgamated into and you'll find that the charge was a success even though it was a mistake to charge in the first place.
"Whoa there cherry bums! " Death or Glory has been the motto of Hales Horse, reformed later unto the 17th light Dragoons since 1759.It is one of the oldest Regimental symbols in the British Army and the motto is still carried nobley to this day by the Queens Royal Lancers ( still a cavalry regt; I think you'll find! )
Do I detect a certain (ehum..) amount of Lancer envy ?
@xcaibur The lancers may have been formed 1759 but the 11th Hussars were formed 1715 so I couldn't give a damn about the lancers plus since the "Death or Glory" cap badge is not considered to be a capbadge but only a motto says to me that their not what they should be since they cannot create their own cap badge but must fluffy their capbadge. So no Lancer envy at all since I would never want or have intentions to join a lower cap badge.
I love this scene and I love his essay about football and the Charge of the Light Brigade poem highlights. We all have assignments to do in every day life and we must make a sacerfice to help for the greater good.
We don't think the poem is about us. TIm McGraw's character is simply relating the poem to something familiar for Michael's character (football) so that he can understand and appreciate the gravity of the story. You are very correct the poem isn't about LSU & Old Miss but either way you want to look at it, the embedded message is the same. And if you think Americans are so dumb, it might prove wise for you to stop watching our movies. Just a thought.
Dear God - only Americans could think this was about them.....Its about a glorious, but fatal charge of the British Light Brigade against the Russian cannons during the Crimean war. More specifically during the battle for Sebastapol. The battle happened before America was even civilised! For any Americans reading this - The Crimea is a very long long way away in another country.
@colinwt You fucking twit. The man in the film was using analogy to teach the boy Tennyson. No American thinks the poem is about them. Or are you just trying to look like an asshole? If so, it's working.
@colinwt You sir are retarded. Try watching the movie. We never said it was about us americans. Its an anology and you british assholes think were stupid.
@Redraptorxx Not where i live but i wasnt really talking about the adults. I was talking about anyone who is about 15-25 who watched this really. Okay their young adults but still. You are required to read this poem and make an anology like the man did with the football team. So i guess maybe to some it was about americans but most of the youth will know its not.
@colinwt It was the Battle of Balaklava and the cannons used for VC's are actually of Chinese origin that were unlimbered at Sevastopol by the Russians. I'm fairly sure that the Charge of the Light Brigade is recognised world wide as a British event.
