@ManifestoLaw Michigan basketball, 1989 champs due to disqualification of Kansas. Oh, well. Indiana beat Michigan the ONLY year UM wins a national title. I'll take that . . . with Indiana's FIVE national titles. One of which was a demolition of UM.
@RegionRatForever I have it on video (old VHS). Remember it like it was yesterday. Thomas rebounds dishes to Alford. Coast to coast and then straight to the tunnel with Hillman pulling on his jersey all the way! Classic. My Dad still has every game from 87 on video.
I'm seeing a lot of comments about the clock being at zero before the shot, but it seems that nobody remembers that this very shot was the cause of the tenths-of-a-second clock rule. I definitely recall Michigan complaining to the Big Ten and the NCAA about this one, and that being the reason why the NCAA adopted tenths of a second the following year.
I used to love watching IU basketball so much. It's just never been the same as it was when Knight ran the program. It truely is the end of an era. Damn. So many great memories. Thanks coach Knight.
No it wasnt. Why do people feel they can lie and get away with it. Who wrote this, Obama? Forget your BS biases watch with your own eyes. Games ended in 89 on the buzzer.
Classic & Priceless! Bob Knigh jumping up and down with excitement. Jay Edwards was IU's All time- Mr. Clutch (ala Reggie Miller) . What a sweet stroke and so cool and calm. Edwards and Lyndon Jones were almost unbeatable together. Bring back the glory days of IU!!!
Actually, the shot was GOOD. This was before the tenths of a second were on the clock like they are now. So, when the clock hit 00, there was still time left before the buzzer (00.9 on down to 00.0). You could actually have a stop in play back then with 00 on the clock and not know if there was .9 or .2 or whatever left before the buzzer. It all comes down to the sound of the buzzer. That's why you hear Vitale say to listen for the horn and not look at the 00 on the clock.
Thank you so much for posting this video. I have been looking for this on here for some time. I was first row center court (actually on the line) for this game and it is my #1 all-time big shot from Indiana. Probably because I was there and it was at the buzzer. Assembly Hall was such an awesome place and really was that night. It will never be the same.(And I know that I am rating this over Smart's shot to win the Nat.Championship but there were still 5 second left when that shot was made).
I'm glad you liked it. Jay was unbelievable in the clutch. Listen closely and you hear a collective "SHOOT" when Lyndon Jones dribbles up to the three point line (before passing to Jay).
The ONLY time I ever saw Bobby Knight jump & get excited. Ever.

A classic!
Hey, has anyone found a video of Alford's epic last-second drive to win at Michigan in '87? Or anything from the 3-OT miracle in Madison in '87?
