when it comes to the born and the unborn, someone's rights HAVE to take precedence. there's really no way around that. i choose the rights of the born. there's no such thing as the "sanctity of life".

you would give birth to a child when you knew that it would go to bed hungry on a common basis and not be able to go to school when you had the choice to do otherwise? i can't help but suspect that you put a higher emphasis on giving birth than you do on the actual welfare of a child.

@mwolfson86 I am well aware of that. But I think it's very arrogant to think you know what someones life is going to be like based on their physical condition. You don't know what kind of life that person will have, and it's not for you to say their life is not worth living.

@Patrice565 I disagree. I think I can make a pretty good guess; and based on that guess, I'd rather be safe than sorry. Look up the Canadian case of Tracy/Robert Latimer. Sorry, but I would argue that her life was defined by pain unto her self and family. I bring it up because, maybe a parent is not emotionally or financially equipped to take care of a severely mentally disabled child. Furthermore, who's going to adopt that child? Who's going to give it the love that every child deserves?

@mwolfson86 Funny that you bring up that case, because according to many testimonies in the case, Tracy was a happy girl who found joy in life despite the terrible pain of her condition. Her life still had dignity and worth. Please explain to me how you think she benefited from being killed by carbon monoxide poisoning by her own father! You're right, sometimes a parent isn't properly equipped to deal with a disabled child. But for the love of God, that doesn't mean we should off them!

@Patrice565 I never said that we should "off them". I said they should not be carried to term. My position is that we should prevent their birth in order to save a whole lot of hardship. Those accounts of her happiness were anecdotal at best. It's not as if she could communicate that happiness very well, could she?

Should people in impoverished nations not be having any children than? Should they all be aborted because they are going to be more difficult to support than a kid in rich country?Tracy smiled, laughed, and her mother said that she would describe her as a happy little girl. How was she better off dead??!!

@Patrice565 Wow. A lot of questions to answer. Luckily a few of them are easy. Should people in impoverished nations not be having children? NO! At least no more than one. Should they be aborted because they will not be taken care of properly? YES! How was tracy better off dead? She would be better off not existing. Would she get a career? Would she get a boyfriend? Would she have sex? Would she go to university? Would she play an instrument? The answer to all those questions is NO!

@mwolfson86 So you base happiness of off these things? I don't have/do any of these, and I am perfectly happy. You are basing a persons happiness/quality of life on such superficial terms. And Tracy already existed in her mothers womb, so by saying that she would be better off aborted, you are really saying that it would be better to kill her than let her live a life that wouldn't measure up to your standards of happiness. The same goes for what you said about children in impoverished nations.

How about the fact that she had constant surgeries reported by doctors to involve a lot of pain? How about the fact that she had the functioning of a 5 month-old? I am not saying Mr. Latimer should have killed her. I'm saying that she should have not being carried to term. There is a difference. I'm advocating the right to kill an early fetus, and not a child.

But what you're really advocating is her murder at a different age. How is it ethical to kill her as a fetus, but not after her birth? She's still the same person.

Because I bet Hitler thought there was nothing wrong with exterminating the millions of people he deemed inferior. What I am saying in my previous post is that it is illogical to say that you can kill a person only in a certain stage of development. If I can kill a person at 8 weeks old, why can't I kill my newborn baby?

@Sueezee1 We go by the only moral code we can, what's good for humanity vs what's bad for humanity. Killing is clearly bad for humanity, because if everyone done it, we'd be extinct, and since this goes against our purpose for being here, it is morally wrong for anyone to do. See, logic.

The fact of the matter is that it is of no consequence that there are many different ethical beliefs. Some of them are just plain wrong. (Like Hitlers). Some actions are either right or wrong. I hope we both agree that things like slavery and murder are both wrong. However, there have been cultures that excepted these practices. That doesn't mean they are right.
