Here's what I don't get--if Madoff (and his sons, and his brother and his niece, who married an SEC Regulator, and Josh Stampfli, his "market maker") never made a trade, then he couldn't have LOST the money. No, no...he STASHED the money. This money is SOMEWHERE. It's very different from a crook broker who loses his investors' money. This guy (and his operation) never even made a trade, as far as the government can tell. That cash is lying in numbered off-shore accounts in the Caymans.

Actually, you're wrong. While the Social Security system is far from perfect, it was never intended to be what most Americans think it is about. It is NOT a future plan that workers pay into so that it will be there for themselves. It is a bargain between the generations. The working generation pays into a system that will pay benefits to those who are retired NOW. The same will apply when you get there.

That is correct and that is exactly what a Ponzi Scheme is as well. The money from his newest investors pay off investors from before. That is how they generated returns. As soon as people started shying away from hedge funds, and madoff wasn't able to get new money to pay off old investors, he came forward and admitted the whole thing. It was a bad thing to do, but it was also dumb of those investors to trust an unregulated hedge fund with their life savings.
