  • To date 32% of tellwut voters have a tatto and of those 26% regret getting it. That's over a quarter of people getting tattoos regret it. Not sure if you gave that stat to kids,it would change their mind.

  • i would like to add the spanish subtitles to the video "Kathryn Schulz: Don't regret regret". Is there any way i could get official authoritation to do so and the guarantee it will be added to the video?

  • About 45 people answered. Geez. A few of you even passive aggressively went to my channel to dislike every video. Thanks. It's bad wording on her part. And by the way, I'm clearly not the only person that got confused since I got 10 likes.

  • I want this video on my S365 unit.

  • god, she's spunky, eh? i googled tatoo + regret and only got 2.1M hits...yrmv!

  • "regrets reminds us we can do better":it turned up as a club of people with post shock from having made a tattoo. having regrets doesn't mean we won't heart people we love, it may lead to the same/similar action. in general trying to give the best according to the circumstances, which means we should do conscious efforts to learn to make decisions. we all DO make mistakes. excepting it's good. i think this has to do with totally another sort of speech-ego, motivation, software design, etc.

  • Even her definition of regret is bogus.

Why would anybody ask this moron to speak in public?

  • so her tattoo was slightly ascue was it?

  • @hxnncht you are a man, you give good speeches ? i could learn from you. can you show me your talent please.

  • I've never felt regret... Apparently I'm a sociopath. Huh. Prolly should get that checked out.

  • @merullo23 Don't worry about it. If you are the authorities will let you know eventually. You might even make it to the papers!

  • Is this from a self-help book?

  • great speech!

  • Things without all remedy should be done without regard, what's done is done. - Lady Macbeth

  • I feel like this video is best watched if you are one of the people who have experienced traumatic, enduring regret.

  • The past can teach us, through experience, how to accomplish things in the future, comfort us with cherished memories, and provide the foundation of what has already been accomplished. But only the future holds life. To live in the past is to embrace what is dead. To live life to its fullest, each day must be created anew. As rational, thinking beings, we must use our intellect, not a blind devotion to what has come before, to make rational choices.

  • I regret watching this video.

  • A bit overly-sentimental but I get the point.

  • excellent and should be compulsory content for high school seniors.

  • Oh no, not this girl again

  • i regret leaving this comment

  • Hayden Panettiere really needs to see this.

  • this made me feel so much better.

  • Kathryn Schulz, you are so caring and compassionate and gentle. You speak like an all-forgiving mother who will protect and soothe her children. This video made me cry because you hit the nail on the head. Everyday I'm reminded by my mind of the stupid things I've done. Everyday I'm trying to let them go. Thank you for talking about regret and for comforting people who can't stop hating certain things about themselves that they can't undo.

  • Great ideas...she changed my philosophies. Thanks :)

  • Regret, unfortunately to the ego, is a choice. Why did she regret that tattoo? There must have been something there worth getting it for her or she wouldn't have had the impulse. Regret is exacerbated by not choosing the more powerful, life affirming choice of being proud of one's decisions, whatever they are. Everything is beautiful, everything is great. And yes, I really mean everything, as long as its done for the possibility of love. And even if you mess up, regret quickly becomes unecessary

  • Tattoo artists must hate this woman....

  • I have tattoos and I don't regret them. I regret watching this video though....

  • @alyshooting And just think you'll be right at home when you get to prison.

  • @dagg67 What does prison have to do with alys comment.. lol

  • The ironic thing is that her tattoo said "regret nothing"

  • <3 Regret doesn't mean we did it how badly but remind us we could do it better

  • My ex's are all sociopaths, they never showed me any regret.

  • 0:15

  • I saw this as a podcast, there was no like button so I came here.

  • Seeing the top three regrets being the same as mine made me feel alot better :)

  • regret is just a social gratuity beat into young children by their "superiors".

you can quit the game anytime.

  • a child punishes him or herself when they regret doing wrong because their parents punished them for doing something wrong.

  • how is 17% of 11.5m supposed to be 7m?

  • @BBQPeanut not 17% of 11.5m, but 17% of all americans who have tattoos. the 11.5m figure refers to the number of hits after googling "regret tattoo". #justsaying

  • @BBQPeanut there are 11.5 million google results for regretted tattoos. 24% of Americans between age 18 and 50 have tattoos. 17% of those people regret getting theirs. I don't know what the exact numbers are there, but the point is that she never claims that 17% of 11.5 million is 7 million. You just misinterpreted her.

  • @BBQPeanut Listening comprehension. 11.5m was a figure for hits for a Google search. 7m was the number of people who regret tattoos. The latter number was not calculated from the former. 7m represented 17% of the total number of people who have tattoos.

  • @BBQPeanut dude u got owned

  • @BBQPeanut 11.5 m is the number of Google hits for the words "tattoo" and "regret". 7m could very well be 17% of all the people in the U.S with tattoos. they don't have to be the same figure. do you see why ?

  • @BBQPeanut u expect a woman to do math?

  • @BBQPeanut The 11.5m number is the number of hits on a Google search for "tattoo regret", NOT the number of people with tattoos.

  • People that have no regrets are usually the people fucking up everyone else's life.

  • "make it go away ! make it go away"

  • girl at 13:25 is regretting her nickleback trampstamp.

  • I cried.

  • Somehow she reminds me of Tiny Tim.

  • "I dont have any regrets. My mistakes made me who I am today". I was in highschool when I had this opinion. Its time to grow and evolve and accept that sometimes, you should have known better. Do you take something positive out of your mistakes? I hope so. Does that mean you shouldnt regret them? Common now, time to grow up, son. I do wish she was a better writer and public speaker though. Her delivery is awful.

  • Romance, education, and especially career are ALL related to finance though..

  • If they ever invent TEDDYTalks, this could be a flagship video. In fact, this lady was created to teach children, and her self-proclaimed "perfectionism" is further proof of such: children would be a well-spring of personal growth opportunity for her.

  • Plopppppp

  • TED promised a video every day, and this is what they put out then when there's nobody with an original idea to come give a talk.

  • @ennot I have not watched it yet but why is they 850 likes?

  • @cristoretornebiblia Watch and then ask stupid question.

  • @cristoretornebiblia I don't know. Probably there are at least 850 people who like to talk about nothing in particular. And there's nothing wrong with that, just not on TED

  • Mistakes in the past is what makes you stronger and wiser. People have regrets because they don't see the value of mistake. fuck regret, and what what's wrong with being a sociopath. Not be able to feel right and wrong, doesn't automatically means they just gonna go ahead and commit crimes. There are laws and social consequences.

  • I disagree with her premise. There is no need for regret when you have a larger picture of existence. There is no future or past, both are ideas as the present is all that exists. Regrets are for people who don't like the way their life turned out but if you understand the Present then it's impossible to have regrets.

  • jesus, i like that tattoo. i just got a mudbutt

  • Get a Tattoo 101:

#1 Find out what you think you want and how much area it covers. You should be able to stand it for a minimum of 3 months

#2 Save up the money to get the area above laser treated to get it removed

    #3 Get the tattoo.

    Optional:

If you do not like it, (start to) get ride of it after 3 Months :P

  • 73 people regretted their regret lol...

  • I love the last message, "Regret doesn't remind us that we did badly. It reminds us that we know we can do better."

  • Not really TED Material .....

  • CTRL+Z (10:00): I find myself LITERALLY and unconsciously trying to ctrl+z minor wrong decisions I take so often!.. til I realize there's no keyboard in front of me to undo the sauce I spilled on the shirt... wacky I know...

  • It's actually a decent tattoo and a meaningful image. I think it has even proved its usefulness to be able to guide you to a personal true north by teaching you more about yourself. A kind of inner exploration. Thanks for the presentation on a subject I deal with on a daily basis. Perhaps my level of regret has more to do with becoming a better person than from the grief of making a life changing mistake.

  • I found this talk a little tedious, but she is really hot.

  • Genius !

  • I should watch this every day

  • sooo... I should get a tatoo? Help me out here :)

  • "Regret reminds us that we can do it better" agree!

  • how true. nice!

  • Captain Hindsight... :P

  • Amazing talk. I needed to be reminded that maybe regrets aren't so bad.

  • much ado about tattoo???

  • i regret the last 16:51 minutes of my life i spent watching this rather than writing my paper...lol

  • @3eternity3 LMAO!!!! :)

  • @3eternity3

Have you written your paper yet? lol :)

  • @3eternity3 lol same

  • it looks like shes been trying to lighten it.

  • I don't believe she was saying have no regrets I believe she is saying embrace your regrets, make peace with them, then let go of them. Get back to living and embracing this moment.

  • She really didn't need 17 minutes to say something obvious.

  • I don't like how she takes long pauses

  • I have no regrets about spending my leisure time on video games.

  • This TED video got a lot of responses compared to some of the others, so obviously, she's doing something right. :)

  • I regretted mine the same day as well! But, I ran to the privacy of my own home and cried into a pillow. Then I got it (mostly) surgically removed. I say "mostly" because I ran out of money at that time, and now it's a faded, barely visible reminder that I shouldn't get any more tats.

  • "Fools regret until they die, forgive yourself back to life." -Channel Detritus by The Human Abstract. Why feel bad emotions if yo don't have to? I agree that you should learn from your mistakes but dwelling on them is foolish.

  • She used to have a talk about apathy but noone turned up.

  • @fielddean I dont regret writing that. - God I feel good!

  • Ooh look my bellybutton

  • As always, this Journalist is completely stupid and just blatantly wrong. She should stop making speeches about stuff she doesn't even understand, let alone write books about them.

  • Is it just me or does anyone else keep looking at the screen cap for "Kathryn Schulz - False Debate" in the side bar and keep thinking "That's one ugly stoned hippy!"? :D

  • Can we have Neil degrasse tyson, michio kaku , Brian Greene, Lawrence Krauss, Brian Cox on TED please? A request.

  • I don't think that embracing your regrets was ever the meaning of "no regrets". It was saying you could skip the emotional regret part and simply jump to the 'move on' part.

Kathryn Schulz is saying: (a) that's impossible, (b) everyone feels regret, and (c) don't regret your regret, just get through it and move on.

  • real life issues are bigger than your stipud tatto

  • humour doesnt help at all

  • @skatetennis123 sure it does. I would think humor is what you need to deal with regrets

  • @bamboopoem1989 i struggle in my life alot, and when i laugh it only helps temporarily, when i stop laughing i must deal with my fears, and the harm i unintentionally cause to others and the resulting pain it causes myself

  • @skatetennis123 sorry about that bro. here's what I feel when I treat regrets with humor: relief, time to move on

  • Regret is an automatic emotional response to something that has happened or been done, while wishing otherwise. For as long as you live, you will regret something. That's how emotions works. No need to be melodramatic.

  • Thank you Kathryn

  • She talk too much, she lost her north !

  • I have attended university for several years and learned alot yet never scquired a degree, I have not regred the education I have participated in. All the knowledge and reflection I have done throughout the years have been beneficial to me. If not for practcial purposes, at least for getting to understand my own values and goals better.

For me learning has never stopped. I still find it enourmously enjoyable to study and think about new concepts and seek out new knowledge.

  • We don't care about Your and Your tatto! :/

  • Tattoos are shit in general, but that one... iich

  • That's a prett bad example. If the tattoo were a steaming pile of doodoo then her view would be more convincing

  • That's a pretty bad example... The tattoo was decent. If it were a steaming pile of shit, her viewpoint would be more convincing.

  • Bit feminist 3.0 in here delivery, but otherwise interesting, if a little navel-gazey. 7/10 for effort.

  • @MinotawrTV what does navel gazey mean

  • @skatetennis123 As in navel-gazing.

  • She's such a good public speaker--so warm and intimate in front of a group of people she's never met. Spectacular.

  • @LazyGirlSuperHero I hope that's dripping in sarcasm!

  • 0:15

  • I guess Anonymous are stupid.

  • I'm not sure we even have control over how we feel. Kathryn has learned how to deal with things as she has aged. I doubt she could've dealt with her regret over her tattoo any differently had she been privvy to her present knowledge at an earlier time. Had she watched an identical video to this earlier in her life, it just wouldn't have had the same effect. It's something that we may only be able to learn through experiencing the passing of time. I wouldn't have understood this earlier in life.

  • You are here because you still regretting

  • This is a very amazing video.. Thank you!!

  • Never stop exploring and keep an eye on your own True North (15:03). Words of wisdom there.

  • Good message, but not good delivery.

  • very timely in my life, thank you TED.

  • @TEDtalksDirector

    I speak 4 languages (english/german/lithuanian/russian)

And russian being my native language i can provide a correct literary translation into russian language.

What should i do to start translating?

  • btw ... tattoo is just Plain Stupid!

  • Well, I won't regret regretting having watched this Ted Talk....

  • How did this get 420 likes, did everyone fall asleep at 8 mniutes and accidentally land on like?

  • Poorly thought out and poorly presented.

  • your tattoo guided you to doing that talk. do you still regret it?

  • htohtothothothtohtothothto. WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW!!!!

  • 0:15

  • She obviously completely misunderstands the whole idea of the phase "have no regrets" it's impossible to avoid regret or simply brush it aside, it's part of the human learning process. Having no regrets just means not dwelling endlessly on the unchangeable and to take risks instead of being afraid of the possible consequences. Which is exactly the point she tries to make. She needs to learn what a phase means, before she tries to argue against it.

  • @soulsanctuarymusic1 I just spent that whole video essentially thinking the same thing, until the very end when I started thinking 'She's regretting that tattoo? Why, it looks good."

  • @soulsanctuarymusic1 And you need to learn that the word is "phrase", and not "phase". I would have assumed it was just a typo, but you did it twice... gg.

  • @Kibsterz I type fast, it happens! Learn not to be such a pedantic asshole!

  • @soulsanctuarymusic1 "Having no regrets just means not dwelling endlessly on the unchangeable" - That is exactly what she means by it.

Of course both sides of the story are there in some part. That's just the way all arguments should be made. If you don't understand both sides, you can't understand the argument.

  • @somegeezer1992 She seems to take the phrase "having no regrets" very literally, and as such, puts it across as bad concept, a flawed ideal. She instead claims that regret should be embraced. But embracing your regrets is the exactly the idea the phrase was originally intended to convey. i.e. this whole speech is invalid and pointless.

  • @soulsanctuarymusic1 Ah, I understand what you mean now. =] Must have just read it wrong the first time. =P

  • @soulsanctuarymusic1 depends on how you define regrets. right?

  • @bamboopoem1989 Erm... NO! Like many words that describe emotions, regret is a word with very little room for personal interpretation. "Regret: To feel sorrow or remorse for (an act, fault, disappointment, etc.)" If you're feeling something different, you're not feeling regret, It's a pretty fixed emotion, like happy or sad.

  • @soulsanctuarymusic1 Or you just interpreted it differently.

  • @DuggabbooDC What is there to interpret differently?

  • @DuggabbooDC That description is taken directly from the dictionary, as I said if you're feeling something different, you're not feeling regret. If you're now trying to argue against the fundamental building blocks that make up the consensus of language, then you sir are a moron!

  • @soulsanctuarymusic1 At least now everyone's in agreement then, huh? Relax about the technicalities. The message is a good whether she understood the phrase or not.

  • @tmandrumma4 You're an idiot. I mean, I like you. Sorry if you misunderstood me because I used one of those phrases wrong; communicating lucidly is overrated anyway.

  • @soulsanctuarymusic1

You only said what this phrase means to YOU. You're more ignorant than her, since she had to run this past others before being able to present. I've known people who ruin lives then pat themselves on the back with the mantra 'no regret'. A life without regret is a selfish and myopic life.

  • Comment removed

  • @soulsanctuarymusic1 It's a catchy title though, isn't it?

  • @ninjabob2456 lol, I'll give you that haha :)

  • @soulsanctuarymusic1 You need to understand her point before you try to argue against it. Having no regrets means having no regrets - which she is argueing against. "not dwelling endlessly on the unchangeable and to take risks" is not what I think of when I think of not having any regrets. I think that it means not having any regrets, which is, again, the point she is trying to make. Please don't expect everyone to share your same interpretation of not having regrets.

  • @theguythatcouldfly Just because you don't understand the language the rest of us use, doesn't stop you from being retarded. Do you think the phrase "take it easy" actually relates to the idea of taking something with ease? Of course it doesn't, it wouldn't really make any sense. If you think "have no regrets" literally means having no regrets then you are nothing short of moronic and lack understanding of the fundamental building blocks of our language!

  • @soulsanctuarymusic1 I like how you resort to name calling the first time someone tries to explain the video to you. Clearly, you either didn't understand the concept, or you just didn't watch the entire video. Questioning my intelligence won't help you to understand this video. Arguing semantics won't make you feel better about yourself, either. Watch the video again. Pleace.

  • @theguythatcouldfly My questioning your intelligence is valid when you have no idea what your talking about. I watched the video twice and I still believe what i said, she is confused. And if I was the only one why would my original comment received so many thumbs up?

  • @theguythatcouldfly you "guestion my intelligence" do you? No point deleting your stupid comments, I get emails. What's with you repeatedly bashing this retarded notion of me not watching the video. I'm arguing semantics? You're the one getting butt hurt about being called retarded, not doing too well at refuting it BTW. I'm saying her whole speech is based on a false premise....

  • @theguythatcouldfly ...and just because some people like yourself aren't smart enough to figure out "no regrets" is a form of idiom and semi figurative in nature, doesn't make her anymore intelligent, or this talk any less pointless and boring. She's so soulless in her delivery I don't think even she believes what she's saying. This is definitively rated in the top 10 worst I've seen. Don't take phases too literally or you'll end up like this depression bitch. I wish you well, Break A Leg! ;)

  • @soulsanctuarymusic1

Wow, took the words right out of my mouth..... WOuld thumbs up more if I could!

  • @soulsanctuarymusic1 You obviously didn't get this video. Maybe you didn't even finnish it. Here's the thing: 15:51
