One other thing; when humane societies rescue feral cats and adopt them out; they're putting out there a wild-natured cat that's only domesticated in terms of expecting food. Many of them have spent more time feral than inside a shelter, so they dislike being indoors and will frequently run away. Cats genetically aren't very domesticated anyway, but be wary of adopting a shelter cat so you won't have to guard your door to prevent them from escaping
Where I live feral cats are taking over... some lonely woman down the street keeps feeding them/attracting more. They brazenly travel through people's yards and under their homes. They might be wild, but they have no fear of humans; I guess the prospect of a meal makes them fearless.
