It's a collective title, primarily held by the man from Macon and Chuck Berry.
That's a bit harsh. He was certainly pretty, but beautiful beyond mere physical attributes. All his songs were covers. That's not a revelation. Name the 500-odd original singers....

That's what many people who say Elvis copied Chuck and Richard, forget. He couldn't as they had no records out when he started. They all had their influences and did their thing. It's as easy as that.
So what makes you think recordings were the only influence? People in those days got around a lot more to clubs and churches. Jerry Lee Lewis said himself that his main influence was sneaking into black clubs - one owned by his uncle, to listen to the music, where he got his early influences.
You don't get the point. Chuck and Richard didn't have a recording career when Elvis started. And since Elvis lived in a different place than those two, there's no possibility he could've heard them before they cut their first record.
And no, they weren't looking for a white man to sing black. It was only Sam Phillips who had the guts for something like that. All other labels couldn't have been less interested in black music.
I get the point. I've spent a lot of years listening to the history of music, via an on-radio course called Ragtime to Rolling Stones, that outlines the chronological history of rock and roll, blues, jazz. And yes, the recording industry WAS looking for a white man who could actually sing like a black man - that is common knowledge!! Sam Phillips found it first, that's all. You don't know what you're talking about. Everyone from P. Boone to the Crewcuts was covering black music.
Man, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I'm dealing with this stuff almost my whole life. They weren't looking for someone to sound black but for someone who would cover the black artists' songs in a white way ! That's exactly what Pat Boone did for example (and in fact THAT is common knowledge). It's a totally different thing as to what Elvis, Jerry Lee, etc. would do.
Elvis had the OPPORTUNITY to record, because they were looking hard for a WHITE man who could sing black music. He was not singing and entertaining before Richard, no way. He was given a recording contract BECAUSE HE WAS WHITE. Otherwise, Richard would have been there long before Elvis. Everyone knows that!!
How do you know that Richard would've gotten a recording contract? Did you hear him before he was recorded? From what is written (and of course one has to be careful with written stuff) he was "just" another blues-shouter before he wrote "Tutti frutti" and created his own style....
Elvis recorded because he loved to sing the music he felt, he recorded before Richard, according to Richards bio page, you'll need to get with him to verify that I suppose. regardless of his color, I know life wasn't fair back then, but that wasn't the fault of Elvis.
HISTORY will tell you that the music industry was looking for a white man who could sing black music, and sound like a black man. Sun Records found it in Elvis. Black music was extremely popular with young people, but because adults were so racist, the records werent made, and there was violent feeling against R&R - with fears of wild sexuality. Elvis was snapped up because he could sound BLACK. His voice was good, but he wasn't as good as LR. The custom was for "white covers" of black music.

So what makes you think recordings were the only influence? People in those days got around a lot more to clubs and churches. Jerry Lee Lewis said himself that his main influence was sneaking into black clubs - one owned by his uncle, to listen to the music, where he got his early influences.

You don't get the point. Chuck and Richard didn't have a recording career when Elvis started. And since Elvis lived in a different place than those two, there's no possibility he could've heard them before they cut their first record.
And no, they weren't looking for a white man to sing black. It was only Sam Phillips who had the guts for something like that. All other labels couldn't have been less interested in black music.

I've spent a lot of years listening to the history of music, via an on-radio course called Ragtime to Rolling Stones, that outlines the chronological history of rock and roll, blues, jazz. And yes, the recording industry WAS looking for a white man who could actually sing like a black man - that is common knowledge!! Sam Phillips found it first, that's all. You don't know what you're talking about. Everyone from P. Boone to the Crewcuts was covering black music.

They weren't looking for someone to sound black but for someone who would cover the black artists' songs in a white way ! That's exactly what Pat Boone did for example (and in fact THAT is common knowledge). It's a totally different thing as to what Elvis, Jerry Lee, etc. would do.

Elvis had the OPPORTUNITY to record, because they were looking hard for a WHITE man who could sing black music. He was not singing and entertaining before Richard, no way. HISTORY will tell you that the music industry was looking for a white man who could sing black music, and sound like a black man. Sun Records found it in Elvis. Black music was extremely popular with young people, but because adults were so racist, the records werent made, and there was violent feeling against R&R - with fears of wild sexuality. Elvis was snapped up because he could sound BLACK. His voice was good, but he wasn't as good as LR. The custom was for "white covers" of black music.
