I'd put a temp auge in center of lid, the spot where yours is will read about 15 - 25 degrees hotter than where the meat is at. I did this and was surprised at the different temps, helped me know when to adjust the vents. It sure looks great though, nice rig! I keep my expanded metal racks oiled and seasoned with canola like an iron skillet every so often to prevent rust.
I mean make the AWESOME shelves.. the rest of the smoker I can take care of. Do you have a video to post of it in action??? Sure there are lots of us who would love to see it. :-)
THANKS SO MUCH FOR POSTING! Your are very creative and skilled! Tip my hat to you! Looks FANTASTIC... just posted on Craigslist to see if there are any local welders/fabricators in/near Austin TX that can make these for me. Anyone who is reading this that can do so, let me know!
Mike & Doug that was a great video! The ideas that are coming out for the UDS's are just endless. Your's is quite impressive to say the least, hopefully U guys do one on your madian cook so we can see that gal in action.
Sorry mister, but Im truly ofended by you calling this piece of art "UGLY", seriously great job

Well thought out, awesome smoker, only changes I would make are...
1. trap door to ad more fuel to the basket (ie. coal, wood)
2. A water tray (maybe take the last two rows just above the coal basket)
Imho, a great smoker. but needs refinement. Good luck. Im just to lazy to build one.

I really liked 2 things about your design-
The hook on the lid (really smart) and the extension on the valve handle so you dont have to bend over all the time. Really user friendly.
