Do you think it's a good idea that I get a cheap 40 dollar tabletob drum kit to start getting into drumming? I've only been able to practise with a few objects like boxes and metal pans lol
@BadgerCheese94 Sure, if this is all you can afford or want to spend right now. Something is better than nothing but be aware that those table top kit really are just toys. An actual electronic or acoustic kit will be much better to learn on. Still, it will do the job until then. Happy drumming to you!
So I want to start playing drums, but I live with..or inanimate apartment complex with no garage so I can't play... with out disturbing people. Would you recommend an electronic set? But is the sound different from a regular drumset. Which if I were to join a band is what I would lie to play not the electronic set. But just have the electronic set to play at home. Sorry if this is confusing
@fallenangel4310 Yes, an electronic drum kit is definitely the best option. If you join a band then most rehearsal studios have regular drum kits you can hire so this shouldn't be a problem. If in the future you start playing live then you might consider getting a real drum kit but until then an electric kit will be all you need. Hope that helps and happy drumming! :)
Wow... This really helped me out a lot... I just got a drum kit and im getting good at the beat... Even my parents said that I was getting better than the first time I held the drum sticks (it was horrible...trust me)... Thanks a lot.. I'll let you know when I can finally play to all my fav songs :D
I have to say this is a very helpful video, as said before, the way you teach things is superb!
One question though, I've already got my drum kit BUT the sound it makes is WAY WAY too different from any other drum sound I've ever heard. The snare drum, when you hit it, the snares echo for too long and the sound is very metallic.
I dont know if the cause is the drum kit material itself, or the "cover" of the drums. You know, the ones I have are made of very thin
@SoyuzMoguchy Hi, thanks for your lovely message! :) If it's an electric drum kit you're playing on then try listening to it through headphones and not an amplifier. This will make the drums sound much better. If it's an acoustic kit then try sticking a little piece of tissue paper to the edge of your snare drum to stop the echo. Hope that helps a little. Rob
plastic. I've found a way to "mute" the snare "echo" and the metallic sound. I have to put a magazine on top of the snare drum and if you hit the free areas, it sounds just like it does in your video.
Definitely helpful, just started playing drums today, am 15, better late than never ;) got an hour every day dedicated to practicing lined up, will be aiming to do that tomorrow!
I was looking for online resources my 11-year old daughter could use to help her learn and I came across your youtube vids. The way you explain things is easily understandable; so much so that I even started practicing on my daughters set (I am 46 years old). When I showed my daughter "how" I have been learning she became intrigued, especially when she saw your AC/ DC lessons ... she's big AC/ DC music fan. You are a talented instructor, keep up the awesome work!
@350fox Thanks for sharing this with me, mate. It's really nice to hear positive things back from other drummers about my videos so thank you again. I wish you both happy drumming and please let me know if you have any questions about any of my videos or products! Cheers, Rob :)
Hellooo wowww thank you so much forr uploading vids on how to play drums, even though i havent got one. I am like 19 yr old and want to play drums. I want to purchase drum kit, can you advice one a good drum kit which is kind of not really expensive but at the same time very gud. Thank you againn, I already started practising even though i havent got drums. Your a wonderful teacher as well. Can you anser my question thank you very much
@92fredy I'm not the best person to ask about drum kit bargains I'm afraid. Your best bet is to go to your local music store and ask their advice. Then go home and Google your favourite drum kits, find the best prices and buy online. You will get a drum kit delivered to your house online much cheaper than buying in a shop usually. My fave kits that aren't too expensive are Yamaha, Pearl, Sonor, Tama but every one is different. Hope that helps! Rob
Hey Rob ive a drum kite its a peavy 500 series it sounds terriable it dosent sound like drums is it because it needs to be tuned or because of the brand sorry im a noob
I really liked your video-lesson!!! Thanks! I'm 37 & since 1st January of 2012 I have a crasy idea to start learn playing drums. I know - I'm to old for becoming good player but I feel it'll make me happy and it can be my new hobby too. Wish me good luck!
@positiv3denken You're never too old. Seriously! I've had new drum students in their 60's learn faster than my younger students. It's all about the time you put into practice. Good luck, mate! Let me know if you have any questions that I might be able to answer. Rob
This video was great. I already knew this beat through and through when I watched this, but I knew absolutely nothing about counting out the beats. Thanks so much, you've really helped me! :)
YOU'RE FANTASTIC. just found out today I'm getting a drumkit; you're the first video I have watched and I practised it out on my air drums and I'm feeling good :)
so i jiust finished my gutar in 6 months on my own and im so looking forward to playing drums and i cant affrord it right now so could u tell me wat stuff i can use for practise?? my guitar costed alot so my mum wont buy a drum soon so pls reply
hey, ive always wanted to play the drums but i already play like 2 other instruments(guitar, trumpet). do you have any recommendations for a cheap electronic drum set? ps- i have a snare drum too, ive been practicing on that for about a month now.
you could just play rock band 3 drums, i have been playing rock band 3 drums for almost 1 year and im good at real drums now, its basicly a drum trainer, you can practice 100+ beats and all that stuff, add cymbals be using a pro drum kit.
Thanks! This will defiantly help my slim drumming ability. I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas for a make shift drum set. I don't have one but I want so badly to learn to play drums.
That pedal on the bottom of kit i notice i dont have that it must be a different type cause that kit had more than mine but i am using my friends kit cause we are making a band but that helped alot
my brother has a drum kit, and i kind of want to learn but i dont want to make loads of noise and of course at first i would sound awful, would you say its possible to learn just practising by hitting something quieter, or do drums feel very different to play?
@dtrez09 Hey, you can't beat (no pun intended) the feel of real drums but for someone first learning how to play a full drum kit is not essential. As long as you have a bit of imagination and a passion to play then you can learn on just about anything. I used the side of my Dad's sofa with sawn in half toy snooker cues when I first started! Good luck! Rob :)
Thanks so much, this helped me alot! Once my mom saw how good I was she got me a drum set, now I'm the best girl drummer in my grade!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!!=D
@SuperBropo Wow, that's great! I'm so glad I was able to help your drumming. Keep it up and let me know if you have any questions. Happy drumming to you! Rob
@qeriton One of the first you should learn, definitely. If you're finding this too hard then learn the drum beat in lesson 2 first as it's a bit easier. Hope this helps and thanks for your interest in my videos! Rob :)
@ifuckluke Not at all, it's never too late! I've got pupils who started in the their 60's who are actually very good drummers! Thanks for your question. Rob

@fedemessi10 I always recommend getting a drum teacher as they can really help you. Any brand of drums is good as long as you can afford it. My first kit was a rubbish little beginner set but I LOVED it!! Thanks for your interest! Rob
@DrumsTheWord hey but also what do you think its the best... acoustic or electronic drums?? in mi case i cant really do a lot of noise so i think electronic but overall? and any model or brand in specific that you would recommend?? a cheap one hehe
@DrumsTheWord How about electronic drums (for absolute beginner)?. I see thats a roland you have. I have never owned a kit but picked guitars for years as a hobby. I would love to learn drums but is the roland a good kit for me? Thanks for the vid.
oops I just realized why I didn't get a reply to my comment down there, I forgot to add the question,. I meant to ask what would you recommend me to do to get out of that 'rut?' i added my video to give you an idea of what I meant, thanks :)
Hey @spawnsc, I would say that most guitarists would listen to the drum beat as a whole rather than just the hi-hat but if a beat doesn't have many snare drums or bass drums then the hi-hat (or ride cymbal) would be used to stay in time with. There are many exceptions to this but this is kind of what happens most of the time. Hope that helps! Rob
@spawnsc Sorry, but it's not really possible to explain properly in this small box. The whole drum beat is everything the drummer is playing, all of their limbs taken as a whole (snare, bass AND hi-hat). Don't worry though, this is something you will naturally learn over time anyway. It becomes instinct to follow a beat eventually. Cheers.
Hey @prettyboyheechul, I used to play along to a lot of 80's pop music when I first started. Not the greatest decade for music but the beats were simple and I could at least play along to them. Thanks for your interest! Rob
Hello, awesome and straightforward, makes it very clear. I've been playing a few years but still consider myself a beginner. I definitely want to get the drumming basics down but I'm having trouble getting into new beats. I always go back to the same beats --feel kind of stuck in a rut. There's an example on my page so you can get an idea of what I mean, but once again, great video, thanks!
Hi @duffster95, It's the there P's when it comes to learning a new instrument - Practice, Patience and Persistence. Oh, and a good drum teacher really helps as well ;-) Thanks for your interest! Rob
I really need your help - I have an electronic drum kit (a Yamaha DTXplorer) and I want to take videos and record myself play. The only issue is finding a way to record the audio bit such that the drum sounds are intact (recording with a normal video camera on speaker doesn't do justice to the drum sounds). How do you record yourself - the sounds in this video are dead accurate! Please can you help me?
Hey @osdude007, I just simply plugged my drum kit and microphone directly into my camera with a cheap double jack adaptor. I then played around with the drum kit volume levels and the camera volume levels until a good level was reached. Good luck and thanks for your interest!
@kivitimo Not possible for many people. So for having an opportunity to learn drums we go to electronic. But nowadays there are electronic kits that sound better than some acoustics (2BOX Drumit Five). Nevertheless i´m looking for the day to have my acoustic...until then i practice on my awesome 2Box.
Do you think it's a good idea that I get a cheap 40 dollar tabletob drum kit to start getting into drumming? I've only been able to practise with a few objects like boxes and metal pans lol

what do guitarist follow along with on a drummer? is it the high hat that helps a guitarist stay within timing with a drummer?
spawnsc 9 months ago
Hey @spawnsc, I would say that most guitarists would listen to the drum beat as a whole rather than just the hi-hat but if a beat doesn't have many snare drums or bass drums then the hi-hat (or ride cymbal) would be used to stay in time with. There are many exceptions to this but this is kind of what happens most of the time. Hope that helps! Rob
DrumsTheWord 9 months ago
@DrumsTheWord when you say follows the drum beat as a whole can you give me more details on that? sorry im new to all this.
spawnsc 9 months ago
@spawnsc Sorry, but it's not really possible to explain properly in this small box. The whole drum beat is everything the drummer is playing, all of their limbs taken as a whole (snare, bass AND hi-hat). Don't worry though, this is something you will naturally learn over time anyway. It becomes instinct to follow a beat eventually. Cheers.

what songs did you play when you were a beginner?
prettyboyheechul 10 months ago
Hey @prettyboyheechul, I used to play along to a lot of 80's pop music when I first started. Not the greatest decade for music but the beats were simple and I could at least play along to them. Thanks for your interest! Rob

@DrumsTheWord thanks alot! :)
prettyboyheechul 10 months ago
Hello, awesome and straightforward, makes it very clear. I've been playing a few years but still consider myself a beginner. I definitely want to get the drumming basics down but I'm having trouble getting into new beats. I always go back to the same beats --feel kind of stuck in a rut. There's an example on my page so you can get an idea of what I mean, but once again, great video, thanks!

hey man great video
I was wondering if you can tell me excercises for beats with just hands like 3 and 2 or something.

Hey there mate :)
Please can you help me?
osdude007 1 year ago
Hey @osdude007, I just simply plugged my drum kit and microphone directly into my camera with a cheap double jack adaptor. I then played around with the drum kit volume levels and the camera volume levels until a good level was reached. Good luck and thanks for your interest!

what is it with electric drums?!
I understand you don't wanna annoy your neighbors or whatever but seriously,
go acoustic people!
kivitimo 1 year ago
@kivitimo Not possible for many people. So for having an opportunity to learn drums we go to electronic. But nowadays there are electronic kits that sound better than some acoustics (2BOX Drumit Five). Nevertheless i´m looking for the day to have my acoustic...until then i practice on my awesome 2Box.
