I believe Anne Marie paved the path for the black beauties in the 60s and 70s. Yes she should have become Miss Universe but Miss Brasil also had a beautiful canditate. For now the history tells us that Miss Curacao became 1st runner up. Hopefully one day we will win the crown.
Marta Congratulations !..... you deserved the title!, Pity it only at that time, the contest was really serious and not bought !!!.. currently earns the country that is of commercial interest in its sponsor and owner (D. Trump)!
I would like to see Anne winning! =( but it's better she was 1st Runner Up because that was a decade of a lot of racism, so the world was not prepared to recieve a black beauty queen, Anne Marie you are the best, but Brazil is very pretty too, congratgulations to both! =)
1968 pageant was probably the best - the girls excelled in natural beauty , elegance and spontaneity. I understand how the Caribbeans feel about Anne, but they should be grateful she was the 1st.runner up, it is not easy to be among the semi-finalists, let alone be the 2nd.best. Marta flashed a lovely smile all the time, was honest when said she couldn't talk and had eyes to die for.
Miss Brazil is beauttiful, the best!
Peggy Kopp Arenas Miss Venezuela looks fresh and radiant. She was born in april 1951 so she was 17 when she got selected as the 3rd runner up. Beautiful..!!!.
I agree. Anne-Marie Braafhied was ROBBED.! There was a very loud and boisterous pro-Brazilian crowd that night and they may have influenced the judges with their very overzealous support of Vasconcellos. I suppose Miss universe was making it up to Brazil for the 1954 decision. Naming the USA's Miriam Stevenson as opposed to Brazil's Martha Rocha, who should have won.! Now she was ROBBED and was simply stunning. Nevertheless, Vasconcellos was the '68 titlelist and she made Brasilia proud.
Miss Curacao was robbed blind. It was in the US in 1968. They were afraid to pick a black woman as Miss Universe. One beauty pageant site called Martha a "graceless, charmless glamazon." I agree...41 years later, I agree.
BTW, I saw a photo of Ms. Rocha - she wasn't that terrific.
There was no fear of any imaginary "wacism" you leftist pretend existed. The rela history was one of Fullbright stunts Al Gore Sr. propaganda and MLK/Ramsey Clark/ Commie conspiracism and staged "evvents" to exploit "progressive" leftist darwinist policies and "segregation" as instuted by the WIlson's and democraps of the "progressive" era.
The great thing about this Miss Universe is that not only was she extraordinarily beautiful but also because she is one of the sweetest and most charysmatic persson of this country. Hugs from Paulo
Woah! I can't believe this in on youtube. My Aunt was Miss Dominion of Canada, she is in the black gown at 3:02. She told me that was her prom dress that my grandma made for her. Thanks for putting this on.
What a wonderful peagent! Thejudges were spot on. It's hard to say who was the most beautiful, but Miss Brazil had that special charm and mesmerizing eyes! Miss Curacao looked like a living doll.
Miss Curacao is the first black semifinalist ever....she should have been Miss Universe 1968...But was also the time of Martin Luther King ..and the black power movement in the USA....so think that politics may have interfere with Annemarie becoming the first black Miss Universe.
I love Sylvia Hitchcock, I'm her fan #1... and I think that Martha is one of the Miss Universes with the prettiest eyes. She comes from Salvador, in my consideration, a place where you can find the most beautiful women in the world.
@Caribbean71 She was the smartest, she answered very good, but she did not win because she was black, and at that time it was too early to crowned miss curacao miss universe.
Martha is gorgeous miss universe, I have thew video and I enjoy it any time I watch it.
Indeed! I was a 7 years old boy and remember it from magazines only. Thanks for this historical documentary! Greetings to Martha Vasconcelos, our 2nd MISS Universe ( first was in 64) . We will be going after it again for 2008 title (after a 1st runner-up last year) ... 40 years later !
This video is incredible! Sylvia Hitchcock is a legend, she was a big celebrity and is one of the most remembered Miss Universes. She crowns Martha Vasconcellos from Brazil, the girl with the most beautiful eyes ever! This video is A TREASURE!
