I had the same one in my old computer. About 2 weeks before it died, it would randomly click like the "click of death" once or twice every other day or so, and then it died. Ran REALLY loud. Like a high pitch whine when running, and this drive lasted for almost 5 years. Replaced it with a Western Digital 160GB Blue. :P
Speaking of which, at my school that I go to, the alarm sounded like I was in war, and there were enemies 12-o' clock of our post/perimeter. I was like, "Go, go go!" but the alarm scared the hell out of me.
Guys sorry to spam but, i have a HP Pavilion laptop with 160gb harddrive, everytime i extract like 2-3 games from hp games, it wastes a giga or two, is that normal?
Seriously, maxtors are the WORST hard drives ever made. I prefer either Seagate or western digital. Western digitals are tough, and seagates are dead quiet.
seagate owns maxtor right now that's probebly why they are so bad cause seagate wants people to stop buying maxtor and buy thier own main drives and western digital hard drives are really touch i agree i had one as an external and accedentally dropped it onto the floor a couple of times while it is still working and now it is still faithfully working =D Western Digital <3
Ive heard that fujitsu drives are worth looking at. IDK, i still prefer WD or seagate over piece of shit maxtors (The diamondmax 8 hard drive i have has defied all expectations and has been running steadily for a little over 2 years now, and now is in my desktop)
Fujitsu Nowadays i have no idea about qualitywise, but just 2-3 years ago they were as crappy as Maxtor. had to replace 2 Fujitsus one in my sis pc, and one in my stepdads. Oh and my friend had one in his Laptop that went to hell. Seagate Quality these days after the Maxtor buyout seems to have declined Extremly much lately. Im going WD now Only and they have yet to fail me after 12 years.
fucking hitachi, although their shit is much better now. I used to have the more modern versions of the deskstar (there were some IBM branded deskstar laptop drives that i had) they died hard... with a little assistance xD
sorry did know. but i thought it sound like it is grinding on the platers? i never had a maxtor or seagate or WDC fail but the only drive i had the click of death was a samsung SP0802N 80gb hard drive. but i know maxtor fail alot to. i got seagate/maxtor STM SATA hard drive that only lasted 2 months now id writing errors failed. junk!
I got the click of death on the Samsung SP1203N 120GB drive, but I got it to work again when I put it in the freezer for a few hours. I bought a Seagate of which I don't know the drive #. It overheats and I get errors on it.
we had a guy come in to our work and buy an ext hdd caddy he had an 160gb brand new seagate/maxtor hdd 160 gig ide.. and he brought it back a week later saying it doesnt work, well i hooked it up, and the hdd had one HECK of a clicking. its BRAND NEW, its not suppost to click, well it was and not being recognized. we sold him a WD
All manufacturers have problems with defective drives, and as you see here if it's gonna fail it usually happens shortly after purchase. My neighbour bought a brand new drive and exactly the same happened to him.
To be honest though, these failures is enough to put you off selling or upgrading systems, because you often get blamed for them despite it not being your fault. The sooner this technology is replaced with solid state alternatives the better, imo.

Is this a death wish or a 'deaf' wish? That is rather deafening unless you keep the volume low. But what can I say, that's just typical Maxtor ;)

Have you contacted any data retrieval services? I wouldn't switch the thing on or take it apart any more. Good luck :)

sounds like the grease that make the surface of the platter smooth is worn out, so i can't read the platter. and is this an 1 terribyte?
tyleralan11 4 years ago
There isn't any grease. The disk surface must be FREE OF ANY SORT OF CONTAMINANTS to fly above the disk.
