I always thought he didn't eat the cookie because he caught himself before he did, not wanting to do something outwardly insignificant right after a very heavy statement. If he ate the cookie, that would say to Margot that he is ready to move on, and he didn't want to send that message. Eating or not eating a cookie shouldn't be very important, but in this mind of this idiosyncratic character, in that moment, it apparently was. Brilliant touch of characterization.
The biscuit is a Petite Madeleine, a reference to A la Recherche du Temps Perdu by Marcel Proust - the book which Jane reads to her unborn child in The Life Aquatic.
This little snippet of a scene encompasses the entirety of the movie. At first and on the surface its a funny, awkward scene, but re-watch it a few times and you se just how heartbreaking and sad it is.
I love Bill Murray's delivery of the line. When I first saw it I laughed just because it was such a random thing to throw out like that, but now it kinda breaks my heart when I watch it. I agree with some of the other posters aswell, I love how he decides not to eat the biscuit at the last minute!
I know. I laugh a bit because the way he just throws out such a depressing thing is a bit funny in the vein of Anderson's typically melodramatic sense of humor, but its also just a very real thought.
I love how Ralleigh is about to eat the cookie but he doesn't. XD lolol great clip lol. This movie is a hilarious and quirky yet dramatic and deep masterpiece. Wes Anderson is amazing.
I don't understand why you love that he was going to eat a cookie but he didn't. Get over your infatuation. It's just good acting, don't masturbate to it.
Hey, lets tailor a film for those spoiled, mediocre, pretentious white suburbanites : dress some popular actors in American Apparel clothing, with headbands, cowboy hats, and hipster beards, put in a vain suicide scene, a slut daughter with daddy issues, some more spoiled brats with daddy issues,a shy self mutilator with crush on his sister, layer some self absorbed Emo music over it for cheap effect.
Lets also just pay every famous actor in the world to be it in just for insurance.
hey man, if you've got a problem with it then dont watch it. just because it doesnt appeal to you in particular doesnt mean its bad, its just your opinion, and you're entitled to it, but dont try and ruin it for anyone else. thank you.

haha, im sorry i do have to agree to an extent. Wes Anderson's movies have an air of pretentiousness so thick that you could choke on it. I like some of his stuff, but sometimes i do feel just too dirty, like im so latte sipping hipster poet prick and thats when I turn the movie off.
I like Bottle Rocket....least fav of Wes Anderson's movies (fav is Rushmore, then Life Aquatic)....but Bottle Rocket is really good and really hilarious.
I thought Rushmore was one of his better. Wes Anderson to me was always one of those directors that has a style good enough to be considered classic and a lot of potential...but just makes crumby movies every now and then. I agree with the Life Aquatic verdict by the way.
I think that both of you are correct. This scene did dispay a unique sense of human nature (Bill Murray probably played the most underrated role in this film) but Wes Anderson's films are usually surreal in a pseudo-realistic way. It's like a little bubble of his imagination, where these impossibly bizzare things are happening and yet it all seems strangely real to the audience.
For all the Wes Anderson/Royal Tenenbaum's bashers and supporters out there, Wes Anderson's style of directing and writing is definitely a required taste. Look at the films for the masses, they are hugely different. Just agree to disagree and get on with your life's!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It could have been a more perfect comment. He (or she) said "required taste" when they meant "acquired taste." Besides, the bashing of "Tenenbaums" doesn't necessarily have to do with not having a taste for Anderson's work. Speaking only for myself of course, I thought "Rushmore" and "Darjeeling" were excellent but that "Tenenbaums" was a masturbatory exercise in graphic design masquerading as cinema.
Easy, stereo. Big words are nothing to be afraid of. They're just as afraid of you as you are of them, but deep down they just want to be your friends.
Haha, that's perfect. I'm going to have to remember that one.
Seriously though, "masturbatory" is a bit too much. I'll agree that it's considerably artsy but I think it makes the movie just that much more charming. It definitely still counts as cinema; it just has an odd little spin to it.
I understand the point you are making. But I think it's stylized nature doesn't detract from quality or attempt to distract from any lack of quality. I believe if it weren't so "artsy" in editing, directing, etc it would not be as good a movie as it is. But the masturbatory nature you accuse it of, I find appealing and refreshing.
I think it tries to be a quirky movie, and although it tries a little hard, it still succeeds. (unlike movies like Juno)

I *don't* watch it! (At least not since the first time). Someone linked to the clip, and I happened upon it. Jeez yourself.
Anyway, it was a dreadful exercise in design and form, without barely a human moment in the whole experience. God bless Gwyneth Paltrow, who made a valiant effort at bringing some honesty to the affair.
it is comical because of the awkwardness. if you haven't seen the movie you might not understand the quirky style of the film and the unique humor used. i think this scene is very real and human. human relations cannot be rehearsed. people don't know what to say or do, and it can be awkward. that same idea came through in this scene.

For what it's worth, "The Darjeeling Limited" was a huge step forward for him.
i understand what you're trying to say about the darjeeling but i think it seems that way because the movie as a whole portrays more emotion. it was a great movie but i still like the royal tenenbaums more and i don't see anything juvenile about it.
well if you haven't watched it how can you say so much about one small clip??? If you don't understand the tone of the film it probably is because you *decided* to ignorantly state an opinion
