LOL @ "Knock yourself out!" I really like Van Halen's original version -- this version makes me appreciate it as a song that can be done in any style.
You know at first I was thinking he was a bit nuts for making the album(s) this came off of. Now I see he was a genius because he's exposing more people to the great lyrics contained in these songs, people who would otherwise not listen to the original because it's a rock song and not their cup of tea but Paul Anka and big band jazz swing just might be. And when other artists go contemporary and cover guys like Paul he stays swing and covers them.
Bleh, whatever. Due credit to the players and arranger for finding a way to pay the rent, but this campy, uber-Caucasian lounge lizard crap is what drove a lot of people to rock in the first place. It's exactly what I'd expect from the virtuoso that came up with "Havin' My Baby."
What a phenomenal swing arrangement! He takes what is essentially a CRAP 80's fm rock track and makes it sound uber chic... Van Halen will never get it but too bad for them!
This is great. My band used to cover this tune back in the '80s in the original Van Halen style. Never thought I would hear it done any other way. This is a great arrangement, and Paul Anka is the ultimate pro. If I were not familiar with the song, I would never have realized that it was a cover of an old rock song.
I wish pretencious swing snobs would stop dissing the original, and Ignorant metal heads stop putting down this cover. Their both equally good versions of a great song.
(I think we can all agree there is far worse music out there folks.)
These ROCK SWINGS covers are uber chic. Anyone who can't understand the generational gap Anka bridges with these phenomenal arrangements isn't a true music lover. Plus, we know there was an endorsement from songs' owners (many of whom were original writers), as he had to get permissions before publishing.
I'm a rocker and a metalhead and I simply love this album. But there will always be naggers out there that will be offended when their favourite (rock) songs are covered in any other way.
The whole album "Rock Swings" was excellent as well as universally ignored.
He does Bon Jovi, Billy Idol, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, Pet Shop Boys, Van Halen, Soundgarden, The Cure and even Nirvana. "Rock Swings" is excellent.
Since rock fans take rock music so seriously, the record is not popular, .
@octofish Was the album ignored? Good! I like my rock music to rock and god knows why this mince is called 'Easy Listening' because it is anything but.
Apart from the fake playing and singing there is another annoying thing about German TV shows: People insist on clapping hands - but they don't swing at all. Most Germans cannot clap or snip on the backbeat, but think it is a must to support cool singers with terrible hand clap noise on the '1' of each bar.
Guys, you can't imagine how it is to be a German musician, trying to explain to his parents about cover shows or that German's most popular trumpet player (Stefan Mros) plays beginner level.
@marellison- -that may be true, but they sure can do sing marching songs to a miltary oompah band!
German military songs are great to listen to-- unless the Wehrmacht is "on tour" so to speak!
I think you are a little too hard on your countrymen. I partnered a German chick her for six months in a beginner's class in Latin and Ballroom dancing--she was terrible, clumsy and off-beat-- a month before she was to go home, the penny dropped. Very quickly, she got it"
As a horn player and singer I can appreciate the toightness of the horns and Mr. Anka has got it, age has no bearing on him. What an inspiration. I am snapping my fingers to this baby. I was skeptical when I saw what the song was, as I love Van Halen, too. Fantabulous
Hahaha like Penguinharry said, amazing cover....just the Germans think it's some great American guy. Which he is, of course....they just don't get it. Hahahahaha. Yessss Paul Anka.
Anka is aGREAT talent and entertainer. He's Canadian and can be a REAL ASSHOLE at times. There's an infamous tape on You Tube of him balling out his band backstage,,, pretty funny!
If I were a composer and my music is covered by different singers or in different music styles I will be more than pleased, specially if it is made with style and quality like this man just did !!! If I were David or Gallaher or any of them I will be pleased that because of Anka, many of the old people would hear and like the music I composed. Maybe my mother doesn't like JUMP or OASIS's songs but guess what!!! she loves Wonderwall or Jump PAUL ANKA's STYLE. It just ROCKS
I'm sure David Lee Roth likes this version more than anybody else if Paul Anka could performe it. It think it is a very good version, the song perfectly suits the swing. The strenght of the music is also its flexibility and fortunately good musicians can see it.

Great cover! The clever arrangement makes it sound as if it was always a jazz standard, narrowly missing the corny factor.

@joynthis Yeah, definitely overly Caucasian, especially being a musical form developed by black Americans...

Paul Anka and Richard Cheese are both geniuses for doing this. They can take Bronze-Poop (1960's-now) era music and put it into Silver age context.
