  • Stumbling upon this video in early january was strangely timed. Two things, a female friend moved to the other side of Britain, gone forever! The woman who comes up at 1:27 looks creepily like her, exact detail, even down to the cold stare! And I lost a woman I really loved, mostly down to my own stupidity, I'm so alone. Yes, this song & it's title I can really relate to. And I DO care! :(

  • @ Som, yes it's somewhat the same style of music. the percussions are equally important in the opening of both tunes "Caroline No" and "Guess I'm Dumb". by the way, the echo effect on the drum slam in Caroline No was achieved by Hal Blaine hitting the drum stick to a cannister filled with water, while Brian Wilson created an echo effect on it. it gives us a hollow drum slam which might even leave us with some exotic feeling too.

  • in fact this is early signs of Brian Wilson preparing the sound and the mood of what would become the 1966 album Pet Sounds. backing vocals are by the highly known The Honeys, a three girls group of which Marilyn Rovell was Brian's wife. Brian co-wrote this tune with Russ Titelman, who also participated with Brian Wilson in his 1988 solo come back album.

  • @gertvangelder The beginning sounds similar to the intro to Caroline, No. To me anyway.

  • Actually on the recording it's the Honeys and Brian, I think. The Honeys were Marilyn Wilson's group.

  • Bloody hell! Can I relate to this, right now, as I crawl into a French brandy bottle!!!

  • No respect for this quack. In the 60's he stabbed anyone in the back to climb the ladder. When his career was waning he stabbed Mike Douglas who had a successful talk show out of Phily at the time. They fired Douglas slid this jerk in and ratings plumetted and the they cancelled him.

  • @carlobari60 You call people "quack", "jerk" . . it's YOU that has NO respect for anyone. If you don't like the person, why are you even watching this video? The man featured is currently dying from a terrible disease. What is wrong with you?

  • @carlobari60 What?

  • Should have been a huge hit, like the Jimmy Webb penned stuff.

  • WOW !!

  • MERAVIGLIOSA!!!

  • The Honeys on backing vocals actually

  • Do you hear Brian Wilson exclaim: "Awesome!" at 2:22 ?

Yes, it's on the original Glen recording that way, too.

And yes, that arrangement IS awesome. Brian understood some things at a very young age that it takes most arrangers years to understand.

  • Doesn't have a clue what to do with his hands -- not used to not having a guitar.

  • @TwangEmHigh True ... but the awkward hands are just right for a character singing "Guess I'm Dumb."

  • Amazing Brill Building/Bacharach kind of record. Beautiful.

  • Good song, but the title's kinda...dumb. I love Brian's music and Glen is a superb talent, but the title makes singing it a bit silly. Glen was trying too hard to emote here. He was probably lip-syncing and his jaw is so pronounced that he looks silly here. Too bad.

  • @Jody07984 This must've been before anyone was sure which direction Glen's career would take.... They're selling him here as a kind of Gene Pitney type.

  • What the fuck is he doing with his mouth?!?

  • @mantra3000

LOLOLOL!!!! Guess he's trying to look sexy?? (I'm gasping for air here laughing so much!! : - D

  • WOW! I've never heard this song before, but is is so great ! Glen is so awesome ! This should be sung now for a new hit single.

  • Class. The backing dancers are a stroke of genius.

  • The genius of Brian Wilson!!! Glen Campbell"s passionate vocal performance!!

    music as it should be...

  • His voice is beautiful in this! Love the pre-Rhinestone Cowboy Glen!

  • And the 45 of this lists for $120.00!!

  • I'm pretty sure I can hear Dennis singing on this...the 'ahahah' bits at 0:52, 1:01 etc. And you can hear Brian in the 'Guess I'm dumb!' bits with the Honeys

  • MAN!! What a GREAT tune!!! How can it be the Beach Boys never recorded this themselves?? Imagine what Carl or Brian coulda done on the Lead vocal..phew...

Certainly , one of Brian's finest tunes ever...

  • @timjmoran This song was a present to Glen Campbell by Brian Wilson for helping the band out with being brian's stand-in til they got Bruce Johnston. It would be have interesting to hear the beach boys do this song, more notably, Brian Wilson.

  • wonderful!

  • Brilliant

  • Lady Gaga of the '60

  • danelectro

  • Cool. Brian doing backing vocals. Brian Wilson production is magnificent.

  • @harwicke He did the backing vocals with the honeys.

  • So "Brian" yet you can hear the Bacharach influence too. If that weren't enough, the multi-talented Campbell on vocals... A combo that gets into your head and stays there for days! Love this song!

  • Hands down, Glen's finest vocsal, ever. He really stretched himself doing this vocal, originally meant for DW on the Today album. Just an awesome vocal!! Wolfsky9

  • As Bacharach-y as this song is, I think it's also a bit of an answer to Spector stuff like You Lost that Lovin Feelin'. A bass line staying the same despite the chord changes on top of it.

  • No-one wrote suspensions, diminshed progressions, pedal notes, and somehow just the changes the ear wants to hear [mine anyway], like BW

  • Martinjp, you are so right. Brian Wilson's music so perfectly captured the human heart yearning for love that is rarely illustrated by music on television or rock radio today. Andy Partridge of XTC is able to capture the same emotion on songs like I Can't Own Her, Harvest Festival and Rook but not enough people celebrate that type of gorgeous sound these days. Jobim and also Frank Loesser (with songs such as My Time Of Day, I've Never Been In Love Before and Warm All Over) had the same touch.

  • This one is dedicated to my good friend Jeanne xoxoxo

  • Lovely song. Captures the 1960s perfectly**==

  • couple things:

It certainly sounds like Brian, during playback, saying "outta sight".

I believe the background vocalists were Brian and the girl group The Honeys. They consisted of Brian's wife (Marilyn), her sister Barbara, and a cousin of the two sisters. Brian wrote/produced a series of sides for The Honeys. A few cuts to watch for (IMHO) are "He's a Doll," "Hide and Seek," and ("The One You Can't Have Is) The One That You Want the Most". All three are pure 1963-65 rock and roll.

  • Brilliant melody. Just brilliant. Brian Wilson.......wow.

  • Awesome, awesome, awesome. I've always loved Brian Wilson when he was in his dreamy Bacharach mode.

  • Yeah. Bacharach and Brian are something else. Those two, plus McCartney, Dylan, and Lennon were the 5 most special songwriters of the 60s to me.

  • @dogkelp Awesome comment and I must compliment you on the "dreamy Bacharach mode" description...hadn't heard that before but it's really accurate and I love that period myself.

  • id herd about this song but only just got to listen to it and its like finding secret treasure thank you very much for posting

  • Glen Campbell was a member of the Wrecking Crew. Not the best reader in the studio, but a dead-on player. A great guitarist. Oh, and vocalist.

    mh

  • Why do I not know this song? You can sure tell this is a Brian Wilson(a god of sorts, musically). Glen Campbell is an incredible artist who is certainly underrated but will never be unappreciated,at least not in my book,or should I say my ipod.

  • Glen Campbell is one of the most underrated musical talents of all time. The guy is INCREDIBLE.

  • OMG! I remember watching Glen Campbell on TV when I was a kid..... I am frickin old!!!!!! LOL

  • gem of a song

  • Great song. Thanks so much for posting it.

  • man that IS awesome..

  • best live performance of this song I have seen. Glen really had some pipes and sang this song beautifully here. I think that's Brian Wilson near the end saying "awesome" at about 2:24. Brian wrote it for Glen, who "was dumb" for leaving the BB's IMHO

  • thanks : i thought I knew 60's and 70's music really well, but i heard this on the radio for the first time a few months ago, where have I been ??

  • Brian acaully says "outta sight", come on in"

  • well, I definitely hear awesome, and not what you have stated at the 2:24. Whether or not it is Brian Wilson, I do not know.

  • Legend has It , that He was just helping-out the Beach Boys , by filling-in for Brian , on-Tour , after Brian Wilson's Infamous "BreakDown" ... He wanted to continue pursuing a Career of His Own.

  • Glen Campbell was admittedly always in awe of Brian Wilson's falsetto...but Glen does show a nice voice on this cut. Funny thing is, at a recent Brian Wilson concert, before the show began, they played this cut over the speaker system.

  • wow,love it...what a great vocal he does on this .

  • What a gem!

  • Great song and beautiful arrangement. This performance should make a Glen Campbell fan out of anyone who loves good music.

Superior sound on this video as well!
