My jaw literally dropped when he said "attachment leads to jealously, the shadow of greed that is". The situation I'm in right now is EXACTLY that........yeah so I'ma watch star wars now :3
It is said that some samurai when learning they would be in a battle would go home and kill their wife and children, therby ridding themsleves of any earhtly attachment that could make them fearful or hesitant in battle. Granted it is extreme but he point is still clear.
This scene speaks such volumes to me. The dark atmosphere of the room displays Anakin's willingness to commit evil to save Padme. Yoda's face is covered in shadow, showing his clouded vision of the future. Anakin's face, however, is still half-lit by the sunlight, displaying his internal conflict. Finally, the first few notes of the song at the end are reminiscent of the Imperial March...
'Everything' I fear to lose IS the same 'everything' I care about ... if I stop caring about those things, what will I care about? ... what will motivate me in life, what will I have to look forward to?
When I was younger I thought Yoda's lesson was wise ... now I'm not so sure anymore.
@monkey0in0a0cage the answer is nothing. I think yoda would say it is a selfish thing to require motivation to live. Life is a state of being, as is death and whatever you were before you were alive. live life humbly as if it were 3pm in the day of your existence.
@CSLFiero And what if the humble life I have is all I care about? Take that away from me and what will remain? An empty shell.
Yoda's lesson is hypocritical. Supposedly, the Jedi should fight for the peace in the galaxy, yet they remain to oppose the Empire once the SIth take over. So they do care about something, they DO FEAR the defeat of the Republic because that would mean the end of them.
Guess they didn't train themselves hard enough to let go of the things THEY fear to lose.
@monkey0in0a0cage to be humbled is to be an empty shell. as yoda said in empire, our bodies are just dirt and what we are is more than the sum of our living parts. more than our lives, in essence. But i do agree that the jedi would not fight to defend the republic if they were not afraid to lose the things they care about. but then again, when the empire came to power, they didn't exactly fight back, they hid. but i do agree ultimately.
@monkey0in0a0cage That can all be explained by something much simpler and easier than trowing the entire idea out the window, and that is that: no one is perfect... Even the Jedi...
@Treyac Yes ... but it does matter if you're representing your beliefs in a hypocritical way. You can't go saying things like Yoda if there are holes in your attitude, or the things you say don't apply in certain situations.
@FranciscoSants No ... good and evil are concepts in childish minds. What you COULD say is the Jedi strive to be selfless, while the Sith (in this case the Empire) doesn't care about morals and are selfish. The Empire ruled and redistributed goods in the galaxy less evenly than the Republic, taking more for the ruling class and giving way less to the common people; thus they were deemed evil. They are not however. Morality has nothing to do with them.
@isieAB no, becouse jesus is just a character in a book. Nothing in this book is ever happend. Its like the lord of the rings do you belive something in this book? no becouse its just a story like the bibel.
Yoda's talking out of his ass here, not the fanboys would know it.
You have a student visibly anxious about losing someone close to him, and Yoda's telling him (rather bluntly) not to grieve or even *MISS* them. It's just some faux-Zen rubbish written by Lucas's penis. This isn't true Buddhist or Zen philosophy.
@sec0ndevolution No you just don't understand it. It is because of Anakin's grieving that he chose the dark side. His feelings led him to attack Mace Windu when he was trying to expose and kill Palpatine and then Anakin's guilt and shame led him to become a Sith. Had Anakin followed Yoda's advice he would not have become Darth Vader. This scene foreshadows that transition excellently. Maybe you just need to learn more about The Force and Star Wars.
@rejekt31292 Actually, had Yoda given Anakin some worthwhile advice, instead of this faux-Zen schlock *perhaps* he wouldn't have been manipulated so easily by Palpatine. Then again, Anakin was a tool of the highest order, so I guess not.
@sec0ndevolution You're confusing what it means to be a Jedi with what it means to be human. How often do you see Jedis let their emotions get the best of them. Both Obi Wan and Qui Gon are calm and collected at all times. Mace Windu let himself get carried away and it ended with him plummeting to the surface of Coruscant. Being a Jedi is all about what you refer to as "Faux-Zen schlock". Anakin got lost in his emotions and went to the dark side.
@rejekt31292 Wrong about Obi-Wan. There's several moments when he loses his shit and acts recklessly. Throwing himself out the window and after the speeder in EpII, bitching out Anakin when they lose Padme whilst chasing Dooku (also EpII), jumping into a droid ambush in EpIII. So yeah, let's ditch that argument for a start.
@rejekt31292 Also, Windu's death was dumb. One moment he wanted to arrest Palpatine, next he wanted to kill him 'cos "he has control of the senate & the courts" a minor fact that hadn't changed during the fight. Almost every character in these movies is written like a retard, making stupid decisions for the sake of the plot. Yoda is no exception here.
@sec0ndevolution Windu drew his light saber because of who Palaptine really was... then when Sideous drew his light saber he obviously had to fight back to save his own life...
@Agureghian What does that have to do with anything? Mace has Palpatine cornered and suddenly decides to kill him because "he has control of the senate and the courts, he's too dangerous to be left alive", a fact he would've known PRIOR to the fight when he wanted to arrest him. For plot convenience, Windu did a 180 and decided to kill him so Anakin could intervene and turn evils etc.
Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose.... master YODA=BUSHIDO , samurai way, Lost the fear of death. Zen Master and Zen teaching= Master Yoda. Best quote...
This scene is really important to me. I try to tell myself this same advice everytime I'm worried about something I can not control, like death. Star Wars is so full of wisdom!
@tarrito91 Yoda is the manifestation of the teacher, the sensei, the professor, the instructor, the guru, the grand parent and the parent that we all want, wanted or strive to be.
@Matz0 jahtruth dot net/buddha dot htm Buddha is NOT a name, it is a descriptive title and means "The Awakened; Anointed or Enlightened One", which is exactly the same meaning as the word "Messiah" has in Hebrew - "Christos" in Greek - "Christ" in English, which are also NOT names but are, like the word Buddha, descriptive titles, as is the word Jesus, which simply means Saviour....
