if you ask me, the original 6 was a very dark era for the nhl. it came into existence after the other nhl teams folded during the depression, and it was plagued with corruption and monopolistic practices among the u.s. teams.
no the original 6 refers to the 6 teams which existed between 1942 & 1967. there were several other nhl teams which existed prior to this era, but they all folded and these 6 were the ones who remained in existence until the expansion of '67.

wasnt ottawa one of em becuz the began with the others i just didnt remember the blackhawks sens did leave but they were one of the six.
