Ideally you need a direct cable to the roof aerial. Once switchover has happened in your area the signal should be stronger and a portable aerial should do the job.

im thinking of buying a freeview box but never got round to doing it. What if some tv ariels only have a wide plug and cant fit into the set top box?

Try checking your predicted coverage on the Freeview website. You need a strong enough signal - you may need to get a booster for your aerial.
