Have to agree, what a great scene from the film. There comes a time in everyones life when certain decisions have to be made, and this such one helped shape the history of Texas and indeed the USA. Their sacrifice has endured ,and will forever.
@march1836 It had everything to do with Liberty and freedom! Santa Anna became a traitor to his country when he abolished the constitution of 1824 and made himself dicdator for life and put Mexico under martial law and taking away all rights and freedom from the people, and that is when the war for independence started,Santa Anna was the hood and the brave Texans were the heroes!!! GET YOUR FACTS STRIGHT BOY!!
@Irishfanism The anglos became traitors and ungrateful for all the favors granted them by the Mexican government. They were greedy and hateful just as Crockett was a coward as well as bowie and Travis and the rest of that illegal gang. SHAME ON THEM & YOU IRISH!
One problem- Fannin and his men were massacred on Palm Sunday AFTER the Alamo fell. They put it in here to heighten the feeling of no possible help. The 1987 film 13 Days to Glory better explains this. So does the 2004 film. Leave it to old Hollywood to screw it up to make a "better" story. But don't let real history get in the way.
@march1836 what is a "Depreation" do you mean depreciation?
Really? How old are you 12? you sound like some one who really hasn't had much of an education. The Mexican Populace hated Santa Anna as much as the Texans did. They were in rebellion against him as well. Many Mexicans died at the Alamo AND Goliad There were Native Mexicans in the Battles of Gonzales, Bexar and San Jacinto who OPPOSED Santa Anna! So shut your trap about these "crimes" against Mexico Santa Anna was WRONG!!!
@Mr508films You know what it means bubba, and if you don't, go ask your pee party buddy, he s/know. The Mexican people did NOT hate Santa Anna, some did, but not all of them. Houston was a traitor, so was bowie, Crockett and the rest of that early pee party gang, so, you s/start reading the latest on Texas research and stop being drunk all the time like bowie, your fake hero!
@march1836 the word you used Depreations, does not exist, and the only reason any Mexican "liked" Santa Anna was because he or she would be executed for treason if they didn't show their "loyalty" By the way I don't drink. BY CHOICE so I don't allow myself to be an ass like you. "pee party gang" Really?- that's the best you can come up with? Who did Houston , Crockett or Bowie betray? Mexico invited the Americans under the Constitution of 1824, then Santa Anna abolished it - He is the traitor.
@march1836 theonly crime here is John Wayne's Rape of historical facts. He wouldn't know a true story if it punched him the face and kicked him in the balls. That people call this a "classic"shows how ignorant and uninformed people really are
@Mr508films This was my WHOLE point that I aimed at him! Even J. Frank Dobie wanted his name off of the credits of the movie. Why SOME people think this is a great movie is beyoud me. I guess they need heroes!
The massacre at Goliad happened as stated, but I would like to make one point. The executions were ordered directly by Santa Ana. General Urrea, who was in command at the Battle of Coleto Creek (where they were captured) after receiving the order to kill the prisoners sent Santa Ana a communique protesting the order. He said they were POW's and had fought honorably and did not want to kill them. Santa Ana sent him a reply ordering him to carry out his order. Urrea was left with no choice.
@ctkroll5 no he meant Bonham lol , earlyer in the scene the guy jumping over the barricade ( actor Parick Wayne ) is Jim Bonham a man that was sent off to receive word on fannons were-abouts and found out that he was ambushed and bonham had the opportunity to leave but chose to ride back and tell travis the news about fannon and on his way back was attacked by the mexican army and his horse was shot . so to anwser your question he meant Bonham not Bowie lol
Apparently there is some debate as to whether this scene actually occurred at the Alamo. It has been documented that Colonel Travis was killed during the initial bombardment and not fighting off a horde of Mexican soldiers with his sabre as Laurence Harvey is doing. That these men were brave and have a rightful place in the pantheon of Texas heroes cannot be gainsayed. Travis' last letter to Sam Houston is one of the most moving documents in American history.

pause at 3:55. the epic picture of travis, bowie, and crockett standing together grabs at you doesn't it?

Interesting how Travis has an English Accent. That's one of many issues I have with this film.

Fannin and 350 Texans were executed, killed in cold blood, by the Mexican army, two weeks after the Alamo fell.

Ambushed - murdered? In a war, can murder actually happen like that? Or is it because it was Americans that died - not anyone else? lol
