@Weibbles X-Com: UFO Defense is very, very good. Terror From the Deep has it's moments, from what i've seen, but is very frustrating if you love keeping people alive. Interceptor is a flight sim sort of game, set in the X-Com universe, Enforcer is a very horrible FPS, from what I've seen, and Apocalypse is pretty interesting, but you might not enjoy it as much as UFO Defense or TFTD.
Actually here gauss is related to the gaussian beam which is the optimal profile for a coherent beam of electromagnetig radiation to keep its focus over long distances.
Great game, but am I wrong to believe it makes use, FULL use, of the cpu? Cause I'm coming back from missions in level 2 difficulty, with high fricking casualties.
should I sack people with low bravery, or use them as cannon fodder?
Yes it reduces accuracy. Avoid having something in your other hand when firing weapons. I don't remember if it only effects rifles and larger guns (two handed weapons), so mabe when shooting pistols it dosn't matter. But its been so many years since I last played x-com games I'm not sure about the pistols
When aliens attck your base they come in through the hatch and hangars, if you isolate them so there is a choke point you then know where all the aliens are and only have to defend one area. By the way he did that if he gets attacked he only has to defend the hatch.
I do believe it is super-accelerated particles, much like the plasma weapons in X-Com: UFO Defence. The only difference in the game is that the Gauss weapons do not require Elerium to run, which humans both do not have a continued supply or and dissolves in water.
I stayed up playing the original X-Com (I have the originals) and it's amazing how the gameplay stands up.even now. I'm debating naming a squaddie after you, mind if I do that? I have a Superfly already. Cue snarky comments from yours truly at the screen.
@Kikoskia Technicly, Gauss in real is unit for magnetic induction, so generally it is really accelerating, but not particles, for that you need de facto directed path for particles, so in uncontrolled enviroment the logical outcome is accelerating projectiles. (Really really)^3 laic description, but as many know... /lazy : ))
@Kikoskia And the term Gauss in reference to technology basically means: Anything that is launch by magnetic forces. Like say some of the ridiculously fast trains they have now. In terms of weapons they're also referred to as Railguns and their major advantages is that they're completely silent and super-accurate.
@Kikoskia Essentially it's using high electrical/magnetic fields to super accelerate slugs of metal rather than use an explosive cartrige as our gunpowder-based weapons do.
Plasma is also accelerated matter, but in a very different way. Plasma is essentially super-hot gas :)
Kikoskia is correct. Gauss weapons in TFTD are a sort of particle accelerator based off the plasma weaponry of the first alien war that propel a stream of antiprotons at it's target.
However, in reality, a Gauss gun (or coil gun) is a theoretical weapon which uses a series of electromagnetic coils to propel a magnetic projectile.
@DieKolkrabe according to wikipedia: a gauss gun is a type of projectile accelerator that consists of multiple coils used as electromagnets in the configuration of a synchronous linear electric motor which accelerate a magnetic projectile to high velocity. In laman terms: magnets make metal thing go fast
@DieKolkrabe From my knowledge of Gauss derived from Mech Warrior, it's a gun that uses magnets to fire a large nail into enemies.sometimes the nail is explosive...
@DieKolkrabe Essentially, fictional Gauss technology (named after the famed mathematician) propels metal slugs at supersonic speeds by means of accelerating their velocity using magnetic rails.
@DieKolkrabe i think gauss (in sci-fi manner) is basically an electrical current that charges, heats, propells, etc. particles in a near needle accurate manner. the fact that a gauss gun (ALLITERATION!!) relies on the persons aim explaisn the fact that you can very easily miss.
@Xman42635 I know this is 5 months old and all, but the idea behind a gauss cannon is the same as the one behind maglev bullet trains, only propelling an object ranging from a penny sized round, to a solid 10 foot block of steel, the difference being launch speed. The penny sized round would be the thing to fire if you want to put a three mile hole ahead of you. So yeah, you were pretty close with propelling.
This is correct. Though, technically, it's Unidentified Submerged Object. Just like how UFO got its start as a military term for a yet-to-be identified contact on Radar, possibly hostile, the USO is a maritime analog, typically (in real life) signifying a sonar contact of a submerged object whose identification, aspect, or ship-class has not yet been identified. Use of the term USO usually is in the context of one country encountering a new foreign submarine design for the first time.
Tastho's and Lobster men take the piss. On beginner a lobster man took a direct hit from a disruptor pulse launcher and was only knocked out.
When i first meet Tastho's I was only using gauss guns : o. I saved the first part of the ship with only two people left and had to abort the second part. Aliens in dis game have tons more health : O
Umm, dammit they're pistols! Pistols, unless they're at least double damage compared to the Cannons, you need the other weaponry to make sure these people stay alive!
Karry...smoke grenades provide cover yes but also provides cover for the enemies as well and can cause dramatic losses to your side if not used properly...besides as long as you take cover there pretty useless and I never use them at all when playing x-com rarely
He might have not had Acc loss, but he would have required burning time units if he needed to pop a grenade into his hand. Starting with one empty hand or at most a grenade or flare is ALWAYS preferrable to starting with a taser.
Because grenades, rockets, and stuns don't credit the killcounter on the stat page though they DO count towards allowing the soldier to gain rank and XP. Only gunshots that cause a death advance the killcounter.
Gauss...I did my first terror mission with basic weapons.Without tanks. And i finished it with three aquanauts alive.I got -3 score for the mission. But,i was surprised i managed to complete it.
@mywifesafag Try aiming a rifle underwater whilst holding a taser. Less accuracy.

A Gauss gun would sort of work the same way as a Rail Gun, as it accelerates an object using magnetism.
Apparently humanity forgot about the medkit, though I do admit trying to find ways to make it work underwater might be hard.
