In the movie clip at 2:18 Lorne Michaels is standing there like some all knowing genius who knows exactly what Kaufman is doing, while everyone else around him is confused. Lorne was probably as initially bewildered as everyone else was by Andy's SNL performance.
Someone recommended this song in a Talk-Talk's video.. i came here to check it out thinking i may not like it, but i was WRONG..! never heard this song before and i liked it instantly !!
Funny.. but i think this is the most Perfectly Evolved and Beautiful Release from REM i have heard .. and Honestly... the last Album where Michael Stipe's Voice has not Yet succumbed to his Maturity.. i love them.. i always will. Thanks for the Music And The Memory's, My Friends..
this is real in every sense, but some days I may listen to Shiny and happy people or Bad day. Take a pick yourself so you do not end up Losing your religion. Music puts it all aside in the end.
I hate Youtube sometimes :(. The like button is great but there should be a LOVE button and this is one song I LOVE. I sing it loudly everytime I hear it as with a few other REM songs but this is just an amazing piece of music. Shame they've agreed to end it but I hope they're all enjoying their well earned retirement!!
@bettstp absolutely......even if it means they broke up some 10 years before they did, this was the perfect song that helped define their entire career. i think after this song, there wasn't much else they could do....it's really a perfect song.
One phrase says it all: CUT TO COMMERCIAL. Even as they begin to get going and catch their rhythm, the money-making beast rears its ugly head. The complexity of this video should have won some award, I'd think: It is the artist's angst even whilst deliberating and collecting funds due. It stinks that art is tarnished for profits. But that comes across in the legacy. And that reveals the irony of the situation. Art must be popular on some level, lest the artists die with non-popular designations.
"I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs (stares?) So melodic. R.E.M. puts it all together. THIS is their masterpiece! The thing that stands out is R.E.M.: More than just a soundtrack to a major motion picture. They threw darts at the movie because they knew that their "background" work was even greater than the motion picture they were enhancing! IF you want to know why they broke up, look no further. Artistry was revealed as ironical, as being better than subjective to anything, even themselves!
I say R.E.M. did not brake up because they were too old, the don't like each other, or can't make great music anymore. I believe they broke up because they were too good to exist in the world of mortals.
This song makes me want to shove this great big wonderful Earth off a cliff and start a new world all over. And who says that it isn't possible? If you can believe in one miracle (life's possibility at all!), then there is no limit to what might happen. What is it to the cosmos to shift a photon or two in the right direction>>>>>?
@is00ez Yes, a photon is a light particle or rather, a packet of energy not to be taken lightly. A shift of a photon or two (contemplating quantum entanglements) would transform the whole universe. If you can believe in one miracle then why not two? Small things cause the larger changes. The power to create life is not man-made, The first breath of life cannot be duplicated in a test lab. We replicate, manipulate, even destroy life, but creation remains held in nuances, the realm of cosmic mind.
@is00ez It's ok. Many times I must sound like I'm talking out of my ass. And sometimes I am! But usually there is something substantial behind it, albeit sometimes subtle. But an idea is an idea, no matter how small. Thanks for taking the time to listen anyway. Happy Thanksgiving to you!
I liked the decimals, the points of initialization: R.E.M.. This, that, and the other thing, articulate looks at points, succinct, defined, not casual but something important and straight to the head. @TheKenTerry How much did you spend, Ken? Unclench,bro- it's only rock and roll- at least you don't have to sit thru some american idol douche bag's rendition of REM- You only suck the dicks you want to, my brother- peece
I didn't spend anything, I just don't complain about all advertisements...then again you don't know the conversation because you only read what I said.
@coupleguyswithtime no, we didn't have to pay or have in video ads before goggle bought you tube. so you are wrong. the in-video ads are just for profit not necessary to the survival of you tube at all.
I saw them live back in 85 supporting U2 at the MK bowl , the longest day ! It pissed it down , but it was a brilliant day , REM were superb playing songs from Murmur .
I met my boyfriend shortly before I was leaving for almost a year of studying abroad in a faraway country. He is from yet another country, so things will be hard for us even after I return. This song gives me strength every time I find myself despairing over the situation. To me, it is the story of how through our combined efforts we make an impossible relationship work across oceans and borders and manage to be there as a motivational force for each other nevertheless. :)
I saw Queen live, Rem was the only other band I ever wanted to see live, I'm gutted they have called it a day =( What fantastic music they made together <3
I fell in love with this track when MS did an acapella version for a BBC2 advert, which was just amazing. Anyone know where I can get a copy of that ad?
About going beyond what you'd expect. Ironically, and fascinatingly, on consignment for this movie, they delivered better than that movie! The song is about doing the impossible, breaking ranks and entering a new dimension, where laws don't apply. R.E.M. broke through and smashed the concept of just enhancing a movie theme: they stole the show! And, in this very appropriate video, showed how they did it! They refused to be locked into a cliché of background commercialism, exceeding expectations!
Just oozes into existence as a part of our culture, gaining reputation and momentum over time (like the song itself!), going beyond being merely the soundtrack to a good movie. The video's directive vector indicates to me, that the group knew that the music was even better than the theatrical sum. Sometimes it works that way. "That's Entertainment" was bigger than the musical, The Band Wagon. This was among their best work, and deserved to be recognized on its own merits!
This song is AWSOME and the movie was AWSOME and Jimm Carry should`ve gotten a Fucking OSCAR for it. Seriously. For the most park I hate him-But he was brilliant in "man on the moon"!
I'm privileged that I got to see them live, once. Thunderbird Stadium, Vancouver, BC on August 29, 2003.
It was a warm, not muggy, Summer night. I saw a firefly whiz by, as the concert went into the night. Saw Thom Yorke sing the last two songs for the encore: E-Bow The Letter and It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine).
One of the best concerts I've seen... Thanks for the memories, guys.
Well it's the end of the world as we know it... So hats off to R.E.M., a real trailblazer, a band that dragged underground weirdness into mass culture and kept it there, a band that refused to age gracefully. A band that may have written the greatest pop song ever and whose best records rank among the finest American rock released in the past three decades. In other words, a true American original!!! ❤ GRAZIE, R.E.M, FOR THE MEMORIES.❤
What a great song, looking for answers from the great beyond.

I'm telling you this, and I'm telling you straight, as I see it. Right or wrong, This is where I'm at. R.E.M. made SURE you could hear the lyrics. The music was great. But the words, the authorship, was first-class, and wouldn't take a back seat to anything! They take credit for keeping their thoughts, the syntax, the meaning, upfront and clear, and not driven into the background, wincing away as so many "great" artists seem to be hiding their inadequacies behind mudded up works of indecisiveness.
