  • What a great song, looking for answers from the great beyond.

  • best band ever! ive even called my son Rem!

  • @MsCrayzchic Respect

  • In the movie clip at 2:18 Lorne Michaels is standing there like some all knowing genius who knows exactly what Kaufman is doing, while everyone else around him is confused. Lorne was probably as initially bewildered as everyone else was by Andy's SNL performance.

  • maldita publicidad

  • i want this song to be played at my funeral

  • Probably the best band ever...wonderful

  • Jim Carrey? WTF

  • @davidtheguitarman Watch the film "man on the moon" Be amazed!

  • great movie ...

  • ja volim R.E.M.

  • Funny.. but i think this is the most Perfectly Evolved and Beautiful Release from REM i have heard .. and Honestly... the last Album where Michael Stipe's Voice has not Yet succumbed to his Maturity.. i love them.. i always will. Thanks for the Music And The Memory's, My Friends..

  • teaching is like pushing an elephant up the stairs

  • @agadigby If you think teaching is bad, you should try a real job lol

  • @thekelz1000

this is real in every sense, but some days I may listen to Shiny and happy people or Bad day. Take a pick yourself so you do not end up Losing your religion. Music puts it all aside in the end.

  • @thekelz1000 Have you ever taught the same class for any period of time? Your comment is very ignorant. It is one of the hardest jobs on this planet.

  • class......

  • not a single piano or guitar tutorial video on youtube on this great song!I wanna perform it onstage!

Anyway, its got to be one of their best songs

  • τι κομματαρα κι αυτη!!! :)

  • I hate Youtube sometimes :(. The like button is great but there should be a LOVE button and this is one song I LOVE. I sing it loudly everytime I hear it as with a few other REM songs but this is just an amazing piece of music. Shame they've agreed to end it but I hope they're all enjoying their well earned retirement!!

  • We are privileged to have shared these moments in time while these guys were here. I'm glad they have left a mark on my existense.

  • @atomikhound same here mate, same here

  • Haha Mike's dancing gets worse every video I see lol

  • oh hecko. This band was stellar. I can't believe they're gone.

  • <3 this song

  • i like turtles.

  • this song still gives me goosbumps, and waters my eyes really well...... <3

  • The piano crashed on the heads of 14 dislikers.

  • a two minute ad before a 4 minute video? you've got to be kidding me.

  • Is this based on the same thing that John Green's Looking For Alaska is?

  • my best freind looks like stripe we get asked alot if we can sign autographs hehe

  • I would have to say this is their most underrated song.

  • Comment removed

  • Do NOT buy the trash advertised in our youtube videos! this is not fu*king TV.

  • The last truly great R.E.M song...and one of their very best

  • @bettstp absolutely......even if it means they broke up some 10 years before they did, this was the perfect song that helped define their entire career. i think after this song, there wasn't much else they could do....it's really a perfect song.

  • I want to dedicate this song to my hero, Christopher Hitchens.

I hope you Andy fans don't mind.

    1949 - 2011

    R.I.P

  • Just AWESOME..

  • Thumbs up if it looked like an enminem video in the thumbnail, but you still clicked it for faith in R.E.M

  • I think in the beginning of the video they are all waiting for their drummer to show up to shoot the video, but he doesn't so they start anyway? lol

  • This is one of my most all time favorite songs of R.E.M!!!!!

  • Michael puts his arms around Mike & Peter, Mike puts his arm around Michael, Peter's like "I'm just here, man."

  • One phrase says it all: CUT TO COMMERCIAL. Even as they begin to get going and catch their rhythm, the money-making beast rears its ugly head. The complexity of this video should have won some award, I'd think: It is the artist's angst even whilst deliberating and collecting funds due. It stinks that art is tarnished for profits. But that comes across in the legacy. And that reveals the irony of the situation. Art must be popular on some level, lest the artists die with non-popular designations.

  • "I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs (stares?) So melodic. R.E.M. puts it all together. THIS is their masterpiece! The thing that stands out is R.E.M.: More than just a soundtrack to a major motion picture. They threw darts at the movie because they knew that their "background" work was even greater than the motion picture they were enhancing! IF you want to know why they broke up, look no further. Artistry was revealed as ironical, as being better than subjective to anything, even themselves!

  • also my favoirte Actor is Jim Carrey :}

  • This is my favorite song from REM they are still my favoorite group" It used to be Nsync not anymore

  • I noticed that the tank top that stipe is wearing says "uncle andy's funhouse". that was a gig that andy kaufman did.

  • I say R.E.M. did not brake up because they were too old, the don't like each other, or can't make great music anymore. I believe they broke up because they were too good to exist in the world of mortals.

  • @nicholsjoshua15

actually the frontman said lack of ideas caused the break up. it was an radio interview or something.

  • @nicholsjoshua15 aye that it be

  • @nicholsjoshua15 amen.

  • @nicholsjoshua15 100% agreed

  • Miss you already... :(

  • We miss you so much guys...

  • I just watched man on the moon last night I realize now what this song means more

  • 2:07! Hahaha!

  • i wonder what planet he is talking about

  • please, kids, behave !!! lol

  • pleasez, kids, behave !!! lol

  • I tried to move REM into my favourites.

I ended up moving my favourites into REM.

  • best song from the last ten years of rem career .

  • This song gives me shivers. Every time.

  • This song makes me want to shove this great big wonderful Earth off a cliff and start a new world all over. And who says that it isn't possible? If you can believe in one miracle (life's possibility at all!), then there is no limit to what might happen. What is it to the cosmos to shift a photon or two in the right direction>>>>>?

  • @MrMajorTime we can all just stand outside earth and push it into a black hole and walk around til we find a better planet

  • @MrMajorTime oh, and by the way, a photon is a light particle, Im not sure what you thought it was

  • @is00ez Yes, a photon is a light particle or rather, a packet of energy not to be taken lightly. A shift of a photon or two (contemplating quantum entanglements) would transform the whole universe. If you can believe in one miracle then why not two? Small things cause the larger changes. The power to create life is not man-made, The first breath of life cannot be duplicated in a test lab. We replicate, manipulate, even destroy life, but creation remains held in nuances, the realm of cosmic mind.

  • @MrMajorTime oh, ok, you taught me something. it honestly sounded like bullshit

  • @is00ez It's ok. Many times I must sound like I'm talking out of my ass. And sometimes I am! But usually there is something substantial behind it, albeit sometimes subtle. But an idea is an idea, no matter how small. Thanks for taking the time to listen anyway. Happy Thanksgiving to you!

  • @MrMajorTime You must be high as fuck

  • @IrishRhavin Nice of you to think so.

  • I liked the decimals, the points of initialization: R.E.M.. This, that, and the other thing, articulate looks at points, succinct, defined, not casual but something important and straight to the head. I'm telling you this, and I'm telling you straight, as I see it. Right or wrong, This is where I'm at. Stop, pause, reflect at words that you can hear from someone who knows something, and take away what you will. We're not aiming for perfection, but rather, a chance to aim our new thought/feeling!

  • R.E.M. made SURE you could hear the lyrics. The music was great. But the words, the authorship, was first-class, and wouldn't take a back seat to anything! They take credit for keeping their thoughts, the syntax, the meaning, upfront and clear, and not driven into the background, wincing away as so many "great" artists seem to be hiding their inadequacies behind mudded up works of indecisiveness. We hear the words free and clear on their own merit, not apologizing for trying to express feelings.

  • Why do we have to watch ads? I freakin hate ads.

  • @snapcase55 get firefox and the ad blocker plugins.

  • @snapcase55 because without ads we would have to pay for our youtube

  • @coupleguyswithtime Thank you for being boring and predictable. The corporations will send you a gift certificate for your next trip to Applebees. Please drive though.

  • @snapcase55

It's life, shut up and listen to this awesome band.

  • @TheKenTerry Thank you for that excellent defense of corporate sponsorhip. You are a corporate drone. Please drive thru and don't forget to consume. Thank you for shopping.

  • @snapcase55

Yea, because I have patience for a 15 second ad I obviously suck the dick of all corporations. You sound so ignorant judging my ideology from one sentence on an online forum. I love R.E.M, and if they need/want money from a view of one of thier songs, i'll happily oblige them.

  • @TheKenTerry How much did you spend, Ken? Unclench,bro- it's only rock and roll- at least you don't have to sit thru some american idol douche bag's rendition of REM- You only suck the dicks you want to, my brother- peece

  • @acbloy

    *Peace

I didn't spend anything, I just don't complain about all advertisements...then again you don't know the conversation because you only read what I said.

  • @TheKenTerry Suck away, KT.

  • @snapcase55

It's so funny, because you are doing it just as much as me by commenting. Keep giving them money, I will :-)

  • @coupleguyswithtime no, we didn't have to pay or have in video ads before goggle bought you tube. so you are wrong. the in-video ads are just for profit not necessary to the survival of you tube at all.

  • R.E.M are brilliant. anyone know the REM song used in the top gear tribute to senna

  • R.I.P Andy Kaufman

  • Love how they did most of the music for "Man On The Moon" Great music,Great Movie.

  • So Goddamn catchy, it's impossible to get those lyrics out of your mind.

  • I think Jim Carrey is the only one who couldve played Andy kaufman. other than andy himself of course.

  • REM, were never afraid was making video's too their work. As some bands are political was the topic.

  • How many greatest hits are needed? Not REMs decision I'd say. Record Company I'd reckon

  • Awsome, love you guys......

  • I saw these boys back in '04 - absolutely amazing performance!

  • I saw them live back in 85 supporting U2 at the MK bowl , the longest day ! It pissed it down , but it was a brilliant day , REM were superb playing songs from Murmur .

    Great memories.

  • R.E.M. is in my <3

  • end of an era but never will be forgotten great band

  • I met my boyfriend shortly before I was leaving for almost a year of studying abroad in a faraway country. He is from yet another country, so things will be hard for us even after I return. This song gives me strength every time I find myself despairing over the situation. To me, it is the story of how through our combined efforts we make an impossible relationship work across oceans and borders and manage to be there as a motivational force for each other nevertheless. :)

  • Sorry.... I didn't realize my comment posted twice below!!:(

  • Love these guys! "They are the soundtrack of my LIFE". I hope they come OUT of retirement!!!:)

  • coldplay could do rem now

  • We need Andy to come back and do a tribute to REM.

  • R.E.M....only kknew them for a week...my mom showed them to me....I am completely in love with all of their songs?

  • like The Who, prepare for a number of reunion tours, last time to see REM, etc.

  • great song but clip is brilliant.

  • this is on The Best of R.E.M. and yet only 748,936 views? the world is messed up

  • @HBoardy92 yeah the world ispretty messed up seeing as how they focus about numbers of views rather than the quality of the music

  • So touching...

  • I fell in love with this track when MS did an acapella version for a BBC2 advert, which was just amazing. Anyone know where I can get a copy of that ad?

  • Props to one of the greatest bands I've ever had the pleasure to listen to.

  • About going beyond what you'd expect. Ironically, and fascinatingly, on consignment for this movie, they delivered better than that movie! The song is about doing the impossible, breaking ranks and entering a new dimension, where laws don't apply. R.E.M. broke through and smashed the concept of just enhancing a movie theme: they stole the show! And, in this very appropriate video, showed how they did it! They refused to be locked into a cliché of background commercialism, exceeding expectations!

  • Just oozes into existence as a part of our culture, gaining reputation and momentum over time (like the song itself!), going beyond being merely the soundtrack to a good movie. The video's directive vector indicates to me, that the group knew that the music was even better than the theatrical sum. Sometimes it works that way. "That's Entertainment" was bigger than the musical, The Band Wagon. This was among their best work, and deserved to be recognized on its own merits!

  • R.E.M wicked band gone but not forgotten

  • Bye bye R.E.M...... :'-(

  • lol.

  • I remember watchin this video before school.

  • Dudes broke it off. I guess 30 years was a long time but I would still like it if they kept doing concerts.

  • R.I.P. R.E.M. <3

  • The last excellent single they released in my opinion. Good luck in retirement guys - you will be missed, but your wonderful music will live on.

  • the song is okayish but the video is probably better imho.

  • one of the best songs of all time....damn that is da shit!! lol

  • what film is it ??

  • @DanniMariexxx Man on the Moon

  • total top 10

  • This song is AWSOME and the movie was AWSOME and Jimm Carry should`ve gotten a Fucking OSCAR for it. Seriously. For the most park I hate him-But he was brilliant in "man on the moon"!

  • the songs will remain :)

  • The greatest ever 10 groups would REM be there - you know they would

  • I will be listening 2 Rapid Eye Movement until I reach the Great Beyond!!!!! Thanks REM for ALL the great music.

  • why is it only couting my views ???

  • R.E.M., Y U Break Up?!?

  • who wants to see shit ads at the start?

  • what a beautiful melody

  • I'm privileged that I got to see them live, once. Thunderbird Stadium, Vancouver, BC on August 29, 2003.

It was a warm, not muggy, Summer night. I saw a firefly whiz by, as the concert went into the night. Saw Thom Yorke sing the last two songs for the encore: E-Bow The Letter and It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine).

One of the best concerts I've seen... Thanks for the memories, guys.

  • @vancityguy

    How fabulous, very jealous

  • @ljtennant I hope you saw them live... I was fortunate, if anything.
