Bream s intrepetation and Sabrina Vlaskalic which is a very close match are the best intrepetation of this brilliante piece.
This piece is Rondo Brilliante which simply means play passionately with glitter and spark that each stave demands to create the Brilliance that the piece deserves or the composer had intended.
Must agree with other s comment about Jie s performnace although good but at times lacks the passion.
For comparison i recommend to google the phrase "emanuele buono aguado" and click the first link. It shows how guitar technique has been improved through years :) but Bream is still great!
A truly fantastic song. I came across this song looking up some famous classical guitarists that Christopher Parkening suggested. I have decided that this song will be the song I perform at my senior year high school variety show... In two years! Haha! Any idea where I could buy this transcription? Please and thank you!
This is one of the most beautiful pieces ever written for the classical guitar. It can be compared with some masterpieces of classical music. I am surprised because this great guitarist-composer doesn't have the reputation he deserves. Young students hate him because of the difficulty they face in learning his etudes. Solists prefer to interprete works of Giuliani or Sor, such as the Rossinianas, the Grand Ouverture, Grand Solo and Sor's op.9 and they miss this delightful musicality.
this sounds great on steel string as well-ever so often i'll switch it up or play it in a different key altogether is a lot of fun too but i still prefer it on nylon if i'm playing live.
wow..3:01 amazing exact(facial expression) of B.B.King!
@glm1685 'Digs'. English slang for cheap accommodation. Think 'La Boheme' with guitars. Also, there are 46 Million Spaniards, and I'm guessing not one of them really gives a toss what you think of them. Just saying.
@luisfcoliveira Yes, I compared them, they both feel what they're playing, If you're another close-minded fanboy it's not my fault. It doesn't matter if their styles are different, I'm talking about feeling what they do, they both do, and that's it. Or do you prefer comparing him to the idiot of Hendrix?
@otharennaur no they both eat shit electrical guitar is not a real instrument I'm sure Steve Vai does like to FEEL really a dick up his arse that faggot he can eat a dick and he can eat shit too, i dont give a fuck stop listening to crap before you start listening to Julian Bream The same thing is comparing an electrical violin to a violin Absurd... -.-!
@luisfcoliveira Oh, excuse me, Electric guitar and classic guitar are two completely different instruments. You don't seem to understand the electric guitar. What if I compare Bream to Lucia Micarelli? would that be ok with you? or should compare only guitar players with guitar players? I mean, c'mon! we're talking about feeling over here! It doesn't matter if someone plays guitar, violin, piano, whatever! it's about them feeling what they play!
@luisfcoliveira I'm not american. And as far as I can see you're another close-minded fanboy. Never thought there would be people like that listening to this kind of music. You shouldn't judge by the instrument instead of the music.
i love the look at the very end, maybe to the film crew, where he hits that last note and he's like "there, how ya like that?"
I gotta say, Bream is one of my heroes. not only because of his music, but i admire his great passion for his field of study. this is coming from a guy who grew up in the mid-west US on a farm with country music playing in nearly every pickup truck. Thanks England for producing as fine a son as Sir Julian.
@Iaokanan29 I don't think so. He did play piano and cello. That's how he got into Academy, since they didn't have a guitar dept. Does anyone know of any videos showing him playing piano or cello? That would be a riot.
He's playing a Jose Romanillos in this Video, You can tell by the headstock and rosette, Jose Romanillos had a signature rosette with "arches". Many of Hermann Hauser's guitars had a different headstock similar to Torress and a rather simple rosette with herringbone pattern
he plays his Hermann Hausser. This video clip is part of the movie Guitarra! and he would only use his finest guitar for that :) you can tell its his Hausser by the wear on the spruce top. good guesses though.
I believe Bream plays a Gary Southwell, among others. Hard to say though, as he's known to own a dozen concert guitars including Kohno, Kevin Aram, David Rubio and other UK luthiers
if you listen closely, there's a lot more variation of tone and overall fireworks in bream's interpretation. Li Jie plays it much more straight and by-the-book
@wassuppaska You were 100% correct in saying Li Jie plays it much more straight and by-the-book. That's because her videos were all part of a set of instructional CD's produced by her teacher. She was 14 years old at that time. At the beginning of each video, instructions were shown in Chinese.
@wassuppaska i agree completely, but on the other hand ur comparing a Julian Bream performance, who is an old guitar professional, and Li Jie's performance as a teen. Bream has of course much better comprehension of the piece.
Julian Bream brings extraordinary feeling into the piece. Li Jie's playing of this piece is excellenet but it just doesn't have the dynamics of Bream's playing.
I just started playing this piece. It's really nice.
yeh ..i thought so it just sounded weird if u keep repeating it the mic kind of messes up and makes it sound like a d..or maybe his old voice or accent
tad excentric coz of Periphrasis - odd inflections in melody - reference 2Linguistics for lack of better word...
Still, a display of outstanding virtuosity .
It's just a pity no one really took Dennis A. seriously when he introduced his Tripodium (tripod for the guitar) because it actually does make a difference in articulation (if only with Aguado's compositions) - I've tried it; I had one built for me by Aguado's indications. (I'm also excentric).
I think the facial expressions help to convey the musical message across, a players body language help us to understand the emotional aspect of high music. And its not wrong to have a giggle now and again, Julian has a great sense of humour about him and is really a down to earth man who likes a beer and a fag!
It's like a very convincing and inspiring oration from a very intelligent person. hearing his rendition of this piece and seeing the Master play it, makes me think that he's personally singing and talking with me face to face using his guitar as his medium. Very impressive!

He says they shared digs, as in lived at the same place. This is part of a documentary and so of course there will be speaking throughout the filming. I have the documentary and it is very good.
its missing the entire introduccion that is usually play before the rondo...however from the beginning it just shows him starting from the rondo itself...and its possible he do some of the repeats but i havent heard this version in a while...
This just couldnt be better. I'm not even going to use the word perfect because it doesnt imply the amount of personality in Breams beautiful interpretation.
A one word summation using three syllables = beloved.
This video shows why the most humble Julian Bream has retained his popularity as an exceptional audio/visual performer & teacher of the grandest scale for more than forty years.
I have never seen a guitarist enjoying more the piece he is playing. I have never seen a man happier with what he is doing. In spite of the great masters of the past, Sor, Giulianni, Tarrega etc. I always thought that classical guitar, began and ended with Segovia. I am not that sure any more. Thank you Mr Bream. God bless you!
I can listen to him play this a million times, and never get sick of hearing it. A superior performance by Mr. Bream- He plays with guts and feeling, hiding nothing. It is pure to listen to and His enthusiasm keeps him young....This is truly delightful!
I have to say that this has always been my favorite performance of the Rondo. Technically its flawless but Bream as usual brings such color to the music that it makes the piece sound bigger than its parts. See his Homage to debussy by Falla elsewhere for an example of making a simple piece sound epic.
the most important thing that maestro bream left to us is that feeling of: i'd never do this that way, but in his context is the better choice. Here we hear his rondó, just like maestro segovia did
I'm so glad you asked. The "Viennese School" is simply another way of saying "classicism," as in Classical music, versus the earlier Baroque and the later Romantic styles. My point was that Bream rejects key features of that style: especially the glissandos that Aguado demands. There are fingering issues as well, but the e-editor doesn't allow a full reply. Ask more , and I can say more>
Oh, you came back. Thanks for explaining! I know this site editor is a pain in the uhm er... neck shall we say :-) ! But you can split the message into several and post them one after another. Also, you can 'Reply' rather than just post: then it'll be easier to follow the thread.
Bream is one of my heroes, but Jie Li acutally plays what Aguado wrote. His velocity is usurpassed, but Jie Li produces a proper nineteeth-century performance of this piece. She seems to understand, ironically, the "Viennese School" and its aesthetic beter than Bream in this particular video moment. She also bothers to play the vital intoduction. Viva Jie Li; God Bless Julian Bream!
I disagree. First, there isn't a great difference in tempos, and second, Bream's performance is downright more musical in my view. Cleaner technically too...
Btw, I'm curious: I'm not sure what you mean by 'understanding the Viennese School' -- could you elaborate?
Look at the hands of Eliot Fisk and Carlos Barbosa-Lima, same thing. It comes from playing the guitar from a young age while the hands are still developing. The playing mutates the development.
how the hell does someone come up with music like this i love his interpretation the best !!!!!!! major genius !!!!!!

Nothing to say about giraffes and/or neck stretching, but Bream's Romanillos sounds absolutely DELIGHTFUL. Even on these stupid compooter speakers.

Those last base notes at the end sounded like farts. He played pretty well. A better performance than Jie Li did at age 14.

Is it just me or he has unusually long left pinky which is also almost as thick as his ring finger!

Look at the hands of Eliot Fisk and Carlos Barbosa-Lima, same thing. It comes from playing the guitar from a young age while the hands are still developing. The playing mutates the development.
