@Taylorsmithx you can always get the waterproof spray-on to make it water proof, and from what it shows in the vid, it's sensor looks like it senses if the wearer is still wearing them, so I'm sure they wont unlace. Right blake ? ;-)

@Taylorsmithx these problems can be fixed with tech that's already out there. problem one: touch sensor, like from the 80's touch screens that had glass should be able to do the trick. problem 2: water proofing should be possible, more so on the motor side of things than the shoe side.

i think that the real issue is torque. will the motor be able to hold them in place when running?

great job! i really like the idea. im not sure if you have thought of it... but making the shoe tighten its own laces means its battery powered, i think i would be a good idea to try and make it recharge itself with each step (without making it feel weird). It might be hard to do but i think it would be well worth it. :)

Small problem. The sensor is in the sole, thus its taking a huge amount of ware. move the activation to a button on the tongue and things will have to be replaced less and it'll be easier to take off and put on.
