She forgot to mention The Weirdos, The Stains, Social Distortion .
Also some rock history worthy to mention...the term "punk" was for the first time applied to the latin garage band "? and the Mysterians" from Michigan in the late 1960s! and also the fast "punk" sound can be heard from many garage bands of the 1960s!! such as The Sonics from WA and Los Saicos from Peru and this was circa 1960-1965! way back when! 1960s Garage bands started it! even 1950s! Do some more homework girl!
Hollywood has always been gangster. Its when we too were gangsters. no neighborhood rivalry, but we did roll into some crazy ones... Mendiola Riots? @MrBrianlowdown come on now dude ..you really think this girl didnt do her homework before making this video? shows how much you know about punk history,, how the fuck is fear from ny ,, when they are LA pioneers of punk...
Umm just a side note, Bad Religion put out their first album in the midst of the LA Huntington scene 1980 if im not mistaken, had a few bad detours traded members back and forth with Circle Jerks and then in 88 put out Suffer which is really the beginning of the whole Epitaph scene as it kinda happened alongside Berkeley/Gilman. Im tired of people not realizing though that Bad Religion was putting out records a long time before that.
Fuck yeah nothing beats the Los Angeles scene well... back then now it's just a bunch of patched up idiots that think punk is about getting wasted and fuck my life I'll live of my parents. Some of them don't even noticing that there's so many fucking bands here in there back yards .Half of these "punkers" don't even know who the fucking Germs are and I'm sure they have no Idea who circle one is!!!I .How did it go from Hardcore Punk to pop punk???I wish I was alive in 1977 or 79!!!
@arebecause0 Yah..I was in HS when The Decline of.. came out and I had a friend who hooked me up w/ tapes of TSOL, DK, Angry Samoans.. It was a good time to be a teen.. a skater and a budding musician. It was such a grassroots movement. I had already heard The Ramones and the Pistols, but when I heard the LA hardcore stuff for the first time..there was just this sense of LIBERATION. Good times. I wish you could have been @ then too
im a 90s metal head i think we were more fortunate cuzz we had all that music to listen too from the day we started i still havent herd all the good music from that ara
The truth is, I never doubt Dick Dale's ability, he was uncommonly fast, but the only surprising thing was he's ability to play staccato for the duration of the songs. However, Link Wray was also credited, Link Wray never played fast... so, how does that hold any water? Perhaps, maybe... just maybe. Punk really didn't become punk until The Stooges? or the MC5? Not possible? Surf music really doesn't have any of the ideas of punk, but you're apparently the music guru. Sleep well tonight.
we're not talking about twangy country music you dumbfuck. which doesn't even come close to the speed of dick dale anyway. link wray often played in a dischordant style. surf music was rebellious music and had it's gangs, greasers, etc. it's all related.
Greaser didn't listen to surf music... haha, thanks. You honestly have no idea about music. I don't need to continue, because you're an infant. Greasers and surf... that's awesome, Greasers started in the South bub. What have you based this argument off of? I send you videos, that you obviously deleted, and then all of a sudden it's not about Dale's music now, it's about his business moves. How could he have been screwed if he'd always been independent? That's what you said.
Also, what is your understanding of music? Do you play? Have you studied? Have you ever listened? I see the selection of vids on your page, and I just don't see how you even know anything about surf, or punk music. Bluegrass is faster than Dick Dale. Django Reinhardt openly used chromatic, imperfect cadence to create tension. Paul Burleson of the Johnny Burnette's RnR Trio help define the ideas found in a lot later bands too.
bluegrass is fast "picking" but it's not faster than dick dale. i've yet to see someone play faster other than a classical guitar style or flamenco which is older than bluegrass anyway.
That's all Dick Dale is... ever hear of Staccato? The back beat isn't very fast ever... he double picked (a bluegrass/country technique btw) to add to the sound. You really are a tool. hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Greasers and surfers... that's awesome. Where in the hell did you ever get that from? You're an idiot when it comes to music. Please shut up.
Seriously, not to sound ignorant cause i still have many years to come, who is Dick Dale? And do you think he is good because he plays fast? Cause, if this discussion is not for the public, then you should take it somewhere else. (i'd be happy to join though)
Most original notes though, I like that... like he invented them. haha, you don't play music obviously or else you'd know the difference between notes and style. You're a failed abortion.
foolfromvannuys, you clearly have no friends, no life, still live in your mothers basement. have you considered suicide?? you should.
here's a challenge, name an artist and post their video to prove your case. if you can't do that than you're nugatory. please show the artist to be earlier and faster than dick dale in the dischordant or surf-alt style.
Well, I've reread your idiotic notions about the "history of rock" and I've come to the conclusion that you've never heard the Stooges, who keep it pretty even paced. Iggy may have been a fan, but that doesn't constitute Dale being a cornerstone of the music. Dick Dale was also widely accepted and was a media darling, not punk. You've failed be even define what dischord means. Dischord being imperfect cadence, do you know what that means? If you did, you'd see that Dale rarely used it.
LA punk, who cares... it's all punk music anyway, dividing it up for the sake of government maintained cities is like putting drapes up in your prison cell and calling it home. I mean, it just so happened that most of the raw, high energy punk shit came from that city, but it really transcend the idea of cities or borders, it's ideas and drive, do it yourself no matter where you are.
Bad Religion werent apart of a punk revival. They were one of the firsts dammit!! New York had good bands, but the Ramones really weren't doing the same things as DK, or Flag or whoever. Hell, to me, NYC didn't became a real punk hub until bands like Agnostic Front and Reagan Youth got started. The West was the best for punk though. Sure, DC had the Bad Brains n a great scene. But, LA was were everything was happening through the people and not through the rags.
The best punk comes out of cali. Hard core at its finest..If you dont agree its cause your ass aint from around here...

and by the way..the ramones in NY and the sex pistols in the UK did start punk...all the shit b4 them was fast rock leading up to punk as we know it. Give props when ther are do.
ramones and the sex pistols didnt start shit they just did what they did and what they liked and the record companies called it punk because they didnt no it was just rocknroll because the same bands that were selling millions of records were calling themselfs rocknroll and the record companies fallow the money
The Sex Pistols are a bunch of fashionistas. It was about being offensive for the sake of making your parents uncomfortable, wow, how original. They didn't bring any new ideas up, they didn't really do anything, except get loaded and act like rock stars. If you want some real UK Punk, listen to GBH or the Subhumans. I like the Ramones, but they're sorta the same thing, except not offensive, all their songs were about comic books and girls.
even though i dont really like the pistols i think fasion is important, not to create a trend but to express yourself in more than just your music. they did bring "punk" into public discusion even though they never called themselfs a punk band and the ramones just did what they liked and just got grouped in under the Punk lable
not all bands have to have political undertones sometimes you just gotta make music you can relate to
I agree with you, but the Pistols were purposely put fourth as a punk band. They went after principles and imagery they didn't really believe in and laughed all the way to the bank. It's not like they slummed it out for the art, they signed with EMI and put out the record they were suppose to and act the way they were suppose to. The Clash signed with CBS, but at least they pushed the music, expressed ideas and still tried to bring their core with them as much as they could.
oh, i'm so sorry to have offended you, the umpire of punk. And How do you figure that Dick Dale invented punk? I mean if you're going for attitude or ideals, Woody Guthrie or Leadbelly did a lot more for revolutionary music. Dale just played stuff faster than most. epic fail... pssh, you don't know shit.
epic fail for the hippie/folkist woody guthrie influence
dick dale was doing fast dischords, notes and non-blues based stuff before anyone so he is clearly the one who deserves the most credit. his playing style and sound is what alternative, punk, thrash etc would have come from.
just ask iggy pop or anyone who was into the weird surf sounds back then.
you obviously lack an understanding on musical theory, i'm a fan of dick dale and purchase many of his song books and I can tell you that he just plays stuff fast. He used the same major and minor scale shapes that had been used in blues and country. Both of the aforementioned musics had already mixed them too. Link Wray is getting closer, because he did use unusual recording techniques, but that doesn't really mean anything either. I personally haven't meant Jim, i didn't know you did.
You also know nothing of Woody Guthrie, who was a working man and spoke out against civil injustice. Go listen to some Taylor Swift you mud headed do nothing. Read some books, or maybe learn to play some music and get back to me. NewMusicNetwork... i guess the name says it all, you think you know a lot, but you know nothing. No one invented punk, it's just the spirit of those who don't care about fitting in and making it themselves, that's always been around. epic fail... you sound like a kid.
Dischord had already been around for a long time too... Coltrane, Leadbelly, Merle Travis and many others used the flat fifth, or the blues note. Jazz and Blues beat ya to it buddy... stop watching MTV.
Oh man, i'm JURASSIC! i remember a lot of those clubs. Also, there's a great movie on the hardcore movment called "American Hardcore, the History of the American Punk Rock". It has a graphic where they pinpoint the cities in LA where "hc" started, then showing how those bands visited other areas..speading the virus across the country! It's classic, just like harcore. You know you're old when the music of your youth is played on VH1 Classics!
VH1 never plays any hardcore or classic punk...I'm glad of that.I dislike the pop world still today.I agree with you...American Hardcore was a great movie.I had never known there were hardcore movements within the south.
Hey, is the host of this the same person that was in the movie S.L.T Punk? You know, the character at the end that had a party then questioned the poser image of the leading character? The one who then took off her panties to show him her clitty ring and said, "NOW, THAT'S PUNK ROCK!"? Ok, that last part didn't happen. But the movie would of been so much better if it did...
(~_~) Punk Emerge From Rappers and so on they evolved to POP and boy bands then some how triggered by a chemical fusion of EMO minerals there comes the formula of Metal then Death Metal evolved And Hate is given by the politicians and there you go a nice parade of
PUNK !!!!!! hehehehehehehe
go kik sumones balls to be a punk heheheheeh i bet that girl has balls nice ...
What language are you speaking? It helps when you're trying to make a point, however uninformed, to speak in a dialect others will understand. Oh, and yes... punk was made in the UK, as well as New York, LA, Detroit, San Francisco, Texas, Chicago, D.C., Philly, Boston, Kansas, Utah, Canada, Venezuela, Belgium, Japan, Australia...
Skinhead5 sorry my friend but you are incorrect. Flea was in Fear on & off for a couple years strange as it sounds. I saw him play at this little place just west of the intersection of Wilshire Bl & Alvardo st-Macarthur park-and no it's not the Elks Lodge i'm talking about & it was a showcase for Rap7 tagger art. Derf Scratch had recently been kicked out of Fear & me & my bro' Brioan Trudell hung out & got drunk w/him.
They mention The Screamers...I give her that. But they mold together both LA movements. First was The Plugz, Black Flag, The Screamers, Flesh Eaters, The Germs, The Weirdos, X, Middle Class, and The Gears. THEN came Circle Jerks, Wasted Youth, etc.
you're right, this lesson had a lot missing, but it was also short, and also she did forget that bad religion started in 1980 with "how could hell be any worse?" The L.A. punk was too big and influential just to be summed up in a two minute video.
When you say both LA movemnents what are the movemewnts Urtalking about. Keep in mind, please, that in the beginning there were no rules,i.e. short hair only or your ass gets kicked. Or Faster, harder, no keyboards, etc. Craig Lee afriend of mine RIPof THE BAGS one of the VERY firstbands-made a list in '81 in an article in 'NOMAG'(anybody 'member that twisted rag called 'The History of LA punk rock' in which he broke down the chronological scene.
The pre-scene wave:The Dogs, Berlin Brats-became Mau-maus, Venus & the razor blades, the motels-yep, there on there, a host of others-1st wave. Weirdos, screamers, germs, bags, zeros, mumps, invaders, needles&pins, tlist to be continued tomorrow. And skinhead5 I am not chopping on ya, OK, just is what it is. Have ta go I xcan do the list complete & correctt
Arthur J&the gold cups, Black randy, etc. 2nd wave-Fear,Gears,angrysamoans,blackflag,black hearts,x,middleclass, flyboys, simpletones, etc morte to come.
she says it inspired '90s revival like "Bad Religion, Lagwagon, and Face To Face"...I'm sorry wasn't Bad Religion much before this?? Who remembers "How Can Hell Be Any Worse?"
Who ever scripted this pieces did not do their research right.I grew up in this scene and Flea was never in FEAR.Also,American skinheads started here.See?
I Don't like this prissy bitch talking about punk rock.

dischordes aren't on the blues scale, retard. keep epic failing. try again.
ne0nsurf 2 years ago
Dischord had already been around for a long time too... Coltrane, Leadbelly, Merle Travis and many others used the flat fifth, or the blues note. Jazz and Blues beat ya to it buddy... stop watching MTV.
funkyfoolfromVanNuys 2 years ago
foolfromVanNuys,
no offense but the flat fifth note isn't a dischord.
blues bends the notes. dischords aren't on the blues scale, dumbfuck.

When I listen to the Sex Pistols, they sound just like the stooges and New york dolls.I agree with you...UK punk was better then the NYC punk.
oramikleepunk 2 years ago
Ive been to New York / London and i would have to say L.A has the best punk scene.

They are NOT punk and had nothing to do with the punk movement of the mid 70's

Oh man, i'm JURASSIC! i remember a lot of those clubs. Also, there's a great movie on the hardcore movment called "American Hardcore, the History of the American Punk Rock". It has a graphic where they pinpoint the cities in LA where "hc" started, then showing how those bands visited other areas..speading the virus across the country! It's classic, just like harcore. You know you're old when the music of your youth is played on VH1 Classics!
racer7nevercrashes 3 years ago
VH1 never plays any hardcore or classic punk...I'm glad of that.I dislike the pop world still today.I agree with you...American Hardcore was a great movie.I had never known there were hardcore movements within the south.
oramikleepunk 3 years ago
no ive seen some ramones and clash on there but they never play any hardcore

Hey, is the host of this the same person that was in the movie S.L.T Punk? You know, the character at the end that had a party then questioned the poser image of the leading character? The one who then took off her panties to show him her clitty ring and said, "NOW, THAT'S PUNK ROCK!"? Ok, that last part didn't happen. But the movie would of been so much better if it did...
racer7nevercrashes 3 years ago
Accordin to Billboard the first PUnk band was called Los Saicos from Peru 1964! search : Los saicos salvaje
lurigancho 3 years ago
Billboard is pop music...they had nothing to do with underground punk of the old eras.

Jacklord1967 4 years ago
They mention The Screamers...I give her that. But they mold together both LA movements. First was The Plugz, Black Flag, The Screamers, Flesh Eaters, The Germs, The Weirdos, X, Middle Class, and The Gears. THEN came Circle Jerks, Wasted Youth, etc.
WoodyAllenNY 4 years ago
you're right, this lesson had a lot missing, but it was also short, and also she did forget that bad religion started in 1980 with "how could hell be any worse?" The L.A. punk was too big and influential just to be summed up in a two minute video.
l1v3f45tDi3y0un9 4 years ago
i agree...it's tough to cover it all in 2 minutes. But shit, at least be accurate on the material you're covering!
WoodyAllenNY 4 years ago
'How could hell be any worse' issued in '82
Jacklord1967 4 years ago
When you say both LA movemnents what are the movemewnts Urtalking about. Keep in mind, please, that in the beginning there were no rules,i.e. short hair only or your ass gets kicked. Or Faster, harder, no keyboards, etc. Craig Lee afriend of mine RIPof THE BAGS one of the VERY firstbands-made a list in '81 in an article in 'NOMAG'(anybody 'member that twisted rag called 'The History of LA punk rock' in which he broke down the chronological scene.
Jacklord1967 4 years ago
The pre-scene wave:The Dogs, Berlin Brats-became Mau-maus, Venus & the razor blades, the motels-yep, there on there, a host of others-1st wave. Weirdos, screamers, germs, bags, zeros, mumps, invaders, needles&pins, tlist to be continued tomorrow. And skinhead5 I am not chopping on ya, OK, just is what it is. Have ta go I xcan do the list complete & correctt
