  • Uncharacteristically stupid opinion out of Ben

  • this seems a very reasonable question on the condition that it is graded on your ability to argue your case one way or the other in a logical and grammatically correct fashion your knowledge of reality tv is irrelevant i would go so far as to say that if you have never heard of reality tv that in itself is a problem because it is so far reaching in the media. being offended by the topic as an sat question also seems like a reasonable and hopefully high marking score for an sat answer

  • thats a bad question i live in england im in year 11 i just did a maths exam about a month ago that had 3 unanswerable questions on it by the admition off the exam board it was fucking imposible they just didnt give you enough figures to work out the question there was no fucking answers this is the easiest fucking question ever you could argue oh but tv doesnt affect people in such a huge manner so it doesnt matter if it lies or u can argue how alot off dumb fuck will use this to influence them

  • The main way you gain points on the SAT essay is by giving examples. Mechanics are a small portion of the grade.

  • Great insight on the SAT essay question about reality tv. You guys work great together, keep up the good work!

  • I wish my SAT essay question was about reality tv... geeze, my question was about the creation or the discovery of DNA and genetic makeup... yeah, I really had to BS my way through that essay.

  • Third time I watched this, third time I commented. This is too funny!

  • While the Chinese are probably testing their students on quantum physics

    at age 10.

    This is so funny.

Way to go Americans, good investment in your future.

Empire Grim Reaper knocking at the door!

  • This is hilarious, no wonder why Americans are getting their ass kicked worldwide in education! That's what Americans measure their intelligence by, knowledge of snookie, ha ha you suck! The empire grim reaper is knocking at the door!!!

LOL, so funny, can't stop laughing ! america is so pathetic HA HA HA HA

  • @WatcherIsWatching

I agree. Even the test makers are more interested in being cool and keeping up with pop culture than they are about challenging the kids mentally.

  • Wow- that question was dumb but not for the reasons I expected it to be. It pretty much spells out any potential meaningful conclusions which students could draw and brings it down to about a yes or no question. I thought the SATs were tough, right now I'd take them any day over my HSCs.

  • i gotta say tht question is pretty easy...i can't see any1 but dumb students and people who like to make a scene being upset. SAT isnt all tht anyway ^_^

  • Anna those large earrings look real good on you.

  • question sounds easy. the SAT is ridiculously easy. So is the ACT. These test really do not test if students are ready for University studies. Known too many high scorers who simply didn't belong in a University, and in fact they ended up flunking out.

  • just BS ur way through it.

  • its an opinion question. they just want to see if you can write.

  • The problem is that I could answer the question, but not provide examples to support my opinion. For the SAT they look for perfect essay structure, but examples are key. I don't believe that this is really fair.

  • It's critical thinking-- fair game. If they can't think of a thoughtful response then that shows that they're not prepared for college. Not every question is going to be tailored to all students. It's not testing their knowledge on the topics but their thought process and the way they make their arguments. The SAT is only a portion of college admissions anyway.

  • Like it or not, it's a significant aspect of modern-day popular "culture". The question is fair.

  • It's kind of annoying how Ben always says that he doesn't care about something that is part of the story... It relates to the story... come on... make it entertaining at least instead of saying you could care less -.- what's the point of having a show if the host doesn't want to talk about something just because he doesn't care about it. It's a recipe for an incredibly dull show.

  • @b2bie exactly they probably lost like 500 people so far cause cenk left and the show is bad now cause cenk is never here to lighten it up

  • They give you all the information you need in the question. And it's so easy.

  • Most questions deal with human nature like "should modern society be criticized for being materialistic?...." Because they are human nature related, examples are evident in a wide variety of sources including history, literature, etc. SAT grading is not about just writing complete sentences, but arguing effectively. And one cannot argue effectively based on a hypothetical discussion of how reality tv is good or bad. Specific examples, from television, are almost a necessity for the essay.

  • All reality tv is scripted

  • The question sucks, just like all the other SAT questions- so yea, its fine

  • It's more about grading your skills rather than your knowledge of specifics.

  • We had to write about aviral lavine in my year 9 Sats UK.

  • Blind essays (timed for what-thirty minutes?) graded by hurried non-professionals are a very bad measuring stick. The SATs are just a fraud anyway, they still exist because a handful of people make a lot of money off of it.

  • What was bad about the question was that no one could use historical examples or literary examples.

  • On a PSSA-test, we had a question about our communities and its traditions. I live in the woods with no neighbors, and was pissed at first. But then I made up a fake-sounding town with a duct tape festival and really laid it on thick.

It's just bothersome to go from answering objective questions with one correct answer to essay questions where you could argue hateful, wrong things but get a good grade so long as the grammar is correct. You're still in logic mode and worried about being right.

  • essay questions ask for personal incidents, and literature and all that stuff. how the fuck do you do that with this prompt

  • The question is fine. It's a sociology question.

  • @Nemesis000000 no because sociology is the lowest form of science

  • i love that esay question about reality TV and i just think they are to stupid to know how to answer esay questions

  • It's not even "real" much of the time. A lot is fucking scripted, as we all know.

  • Reality tv?? Who are the dumbasses wasting time coming up with reality tv questions on an assessment test that is partly a determinant of which college you can get into? ...Seriously, SAT creators? Fuck reality tv!

  • @whoo689 Don't you think reality TV is a real sociological phenomenon? You certainly have strong opinions on it, and rightly so, you would probably do well on the question. It's not trivia.

  • @Nemesis000000 Well, I suppose. I just can't stand those shows. I wouldn't be caught DEAD watching American Idol!

  • That's a descent question about a contemporary topic

  • I think it's a great question. This is actually a subject I've addressed in a couple of college courses. It's a fairly important trend in society and an interesting topic to explore in terms of the sociological impact reality TV has.

  • It's a perfectly fine question, even if stupid. I took the ACT, I believe my essay question was... I forget. Something about a high school principal choosing something or not. The questions are usually pretty dumb.

Ben's totally right though. Stop being whiny and write the essay to prove you're not retarded, is all the SAT asks. The writing portion is only one portion anyway, and with the ACT I think it was optional. I remember being irritated at the Science section for lacking science, deal.

  • @DeJach hahA! yeah. I remember my science section was about penguins. xD I think they actually took an excerpt out of that penguin movie with Morgan Freeman.

  • Is an SAT like a PAT is it a state acheivement test (provincial acheivemnt tests) that are givin in grade 3,6,9 or is it like exams that we get every year after grade 7. Theres alot of things kids can get mad over like i got mad that in grade 7 our exams counted for 25% of our ifnal mark and in grade 8 the same then the next year for the 7`s it was only 15% which we thought was unfair

  • @snowboarder1019 SAT are given during a student's 3rd year in high school. The higher the score, the better college you can get into. Its given all over the US, but I think it is only required in western colleges (California, Oregon, etc.) Where I am, I took the ACT, which was required by my state universities. SAT was optional. It is required by some universities though.

  • @snowboarder1019 no, it's not either of those. It's an exam you typically take in grade 12 before entering college.

  • kids are whining they would complain even more if it was on quantam physics

  • @masterkayaki I wish I had learned about quantum physics in high school. :( I read Feynman's QED the summer after graduation and found it very readable, the character of QM could at least be taught to 9th graders even if the upper level maths (that QED doesn't go into) couldn't. (Though I still think the maths could be taught to a sufficiently bright 9th grader.)

  • @masterkayaki i would like questions on quantam physics as well the question ana asked and quantam physics i can have fun with i suck at normal essay questions but those i feel like i can really answer

  • As a student that has taken the SAT multiple times along with SAT prep, I have to disagree with TYT here. Any SAT prep course you take will say that a huge portion of your grade relies on your ability to cite specific examples. The graders have 60 seconds to read these essays; they don't have time to look at how well-crafted or "smart" an essay is.

  • I don't watch reality TV, but that essay was very fair. The whole city of New York talked about the JERSEY SHORE. Newsflash. Most test takers have never watched an episode. Unless you live in a cave, you can have an opinion about the topic, or just make it up.

  • What is so friggin hard about bull-shitting out an essay about reality TV? If they can't do that, they will fail English 1 A and B.

  • Honestly, I'm a much better test taker than I am a student, because I tend to not study for topics that don't interest me.

Above average standardized test scores might be the only reason I got into the college of my choice, so I really don't have a problem with them.
