@Zukhov1945 I don't know much about Russian mountain ranges, but I do know something about telescopes. When placing them, choose a dry place that is at high altitudes and has relatively calm wind. A good spot is very important. I don't think these are to detect a US attack, which would come from the arctic. It's probably to keep track of military satellites.

oh and the reason the technology looks so old is because if it's not broke they are likely not going to ever replace it. Do you know how old a lot of our planes are? Some of our F-15s are over 25 years old and still flying. We have 50 year old planes too. Our technology looks the same, most people just don't get to see the old stuff because they only show the newer technology in their commercials. We do get updates, but that doesn't mean we're not using technology from 60s and 70s still.

No, like preventative measures that have been in place for decades in case other countries declare war on us. It keeps the peace by us having bases in other countries. We're not an occupational force in the European countries or South Korea, we're there for defense of both them and us.
The bullshit we're doing in the middle east has no basis aside from personal gain, don't confuse that with our necessary overseas bases.
