That depends on whether or not the FAA approves of the use of such during nighttime flight, be it VFR or IFR. The military uses it, but they are not under the jurisdiction of the FAA.
I guess I'm trying to relive the moment... Had a bad night tonight. I fly a 182 also and had to quit flying early due to a massively wrinkled right wing fuel bladder, possible vent issue. Then I borrowed a friends 206 to take the wife & kids up and hit a dear front & center on roll out. I don't know the extent of the damage yet, I'll have to take a better look in the morning light. I know it hit the prop, front gear & lower cowling. Scared the kids a little. It sucked to say the least.
Yeah, insurance covered the repair (less deductible, of course). We owners pitched in a few extra $k to get a completely new paint job since it was in the shop (and it was on our wish list already).
Obviously something needs to be done! Check out the video I just posted from our landing last night at KJYO. Funny to see yours pop up in the 'related videos'.
Whatever happened to the aircraft after this incident? Did your insurance underwriter get it taken care of? As you said, that was a significant amount of damage to the tail area. I'd say a few skins and new horizontal/vertical assemblies. How'd this work out?
Yeah, insurance (Avemco) and Hagerstown Aircraft Services (Hagerstown, MD) came through to restore the plane to 'better than it was' condition. You can see pics of the process on my blog (linked from my profile; search for 'deer strike repair').
You can use a 5 million candlepower light, it wouldn't matter; All the moronic snimal would do is just stare at it and think 'A light. Wow'. And then he's deerburger.
Deer are like rats.. they're everywhere. If the tree-huggers let the hunters take as many as they need to take to make it less hazardous to those who travel the roads (and apparently those who travel the skies), there'd be enough venison to feed three small 3rd world nations. I hate 'em!
This almost happened to me on both takeoff and landing on a flight from SKY to 89D (yes a very short flight). I saw them on take off and thought the noise of takeoff would scare them away but no it made them decide they wanted to run back across the runway. Then when I got to Kellys Island there was a heard of them in the vicinity. It was ironic because I had totaled my car with one.
No venison jerky. Not so much as a splatter on the runway - and I was so hoping for my own "Will Smith 'Independence Day'" moment kicking the carcass as I dragged it off.
Landing lights on light aircraft seem inadequate to this pilot- it would help if they had more "reach". Seeing as how fencing is not always an option and floodlights would be bad for pilots, why not better landing lights?
I'd love to say it's the airport's "fault" for allowing deer near the runway, but truly deer-proofing an airport is more often than not a losing proposition. Plus, what about all those rural airports? Deer will simply have to remain a hazard to night-flying pilots.
Damn, you had the VASI set right and a greased landing too. I almost hit one while taking off on 32 the other night at Winchester. A huge buck walked right on in front of me just as I reached rotation. Hope you get her fixed man!
Wow, my greatest fear of night flight. I hope everything turned out ok with your plane, being a plane owner myself, though not one as nice as your 182 (I have a 150), I know how bummed out I would be at the damage on your aircraft if it were mine. I could hear the sighs of anguish as you checked her out. Good thing you had the video camera. Good luck
Oh shit, dammit! Saw that coming when I read the title.

you need to get an enhanced vision system. it helps turn night into day.

Yes, it does. Deer are very good jumpers - especially with they see a nice big open area full of delicious grass.

I don't think I've ever heard anybody claim they were smart. :)

Ouch. At least everybody (but perhaps the deer) walked away.
How did you determine the fuel bladder was wrinkled?

That sucks...how much did that set ya back and did the insurance cover it all?

Oh, and the damage was tallied at ~$35k.

By the way, I was really just kidding about saying 'something needs to be done'. :)

If it makes you feel any better (I assume you mean the deer lived), he probably had one HELL of a headache!!
Ok, corny, I know...sorry. haha

Isn't it the responsability of the airport to have the runway completely fenced off ?, how do the deer get on it?
