My little poodle just got diagnosed with this too. She was actually diagnosed as "polycythemia vera, secondary to hypoxia". Does Roan have both as his diagnosis? They just have my little Dori on steroids, which she has gained almost a pound in the month she's been on it. She only weighed 6 pounds, so a pound is a lot of extra weight for her. What chemo drug are they having success with? What prognosis have they given you for him?
Hello. My Golden Retiever Cally, just received a preliminary diagnosis of polycythemia last night. She is going in for more blood work next week to make sure this was not just a fluke. I am pretty sure that it is accurate though. How is Roan doing? Has it been difficult? Does the medication make him ill? Any advice you can offer would be appreciated. I am very upset and just want her to be ok :(
@jenantley that is sad to hear! we wish cally all the best. roan is doing quite well actually. he is on chemotherapy medication as well as a steroid to help with his skin (which got very dry and itchy from the chemotherapy). he rests a lot more than he used to, and we can't take him out on giant excursions, but he is still enjoying life. he doesn't appear to be suffering at all. i hope this helps, and keep us posted. we will have you and cally in our thoughts and prayers. much love
I hate that this happens to doggies too. Sending love.

Roan is so pretty!! We have an English Cocker and would love to one day add a springer spaniel to our family :)
