  • i call it a murse

  • in the common man trapping kit video it seems like you had more added to this. could you do a updated video on this frame? im working on my own and i would like some more ideas on what to add to it.

  • Will if its so bat then why does the military spend so much money on wool coats wool shock and blankets.I have a wool blanket my gran dad had back in WW2.this blanket is really heavy.I also have a coat that I got in the Navy which is called a P coat it made of 100% wool and let me tell i have stood out in the rain snow when it was 15 below.an that wool coat kept me warm.now that blanket my gran dad gave me, I have slept out in 10 degree weather comfortably

  • i like your idea of how to use the alice frame. but i used the us training butt pack with the alice keepers instead of the molle. in the center with 1qt. canteens on both sides. it has the extra straps and webbing on it making it a little more expandable. then i places the molle butt pack on the top. i also rolled up the general purpose strap behind the kidny pad for use with the training pack. so i can use all of it without the frame if i had to.

  • Excellent ideas

  • i carryed a 60lb alice pack 4 miles through southern ohio, I think the custom straps would not be a bad option.

  • i lOVe that you did how you wanted with this frame ;0))

  • What temp rating is your wool blanket? I have a couple, are they all rated the same?? Im a new be getting ready to figure this whole thing out ;))) your set up is methodical, and logical. I’m going to adopt part of it for myself. you helped me figure a whole lot out with my bag ;))))) loved the idea about the wool blanket, i bought myself two. makes me think i need to keep my wool right with me. love your videos ;)

  • I Love you ;)))) Where do you live? ;))

  • Where do you get the frame?

  • WHAT???? Way cool modularization on this frame. I have a large pack frame and after taking the pack off to use on my motorcycle, I didn't know what to do with the frame? Now I do!!!! THANKS DAVE!!!

  • I'm amazed that more people aren't adopting this setup. I guess there is too much endless propaganda for various types of high priced packs. This setup is super cheap and fantastically functional. Need to haul a chopped up deer or a five gallon water container? This rig will do it! Hell you can even haul groceries from the super market in the net that I mentioned earlier. Cost of the frame? About 30 dollars.

  • This pack frame setup rocks. I have been using it for the past couple of years and it is great for carrying a vast array of different loads. I have a net made of para cord tied to my frame. And I attach things to the net. A second para cord net--also affixed to the frame-- allows me to carry odd loads, such as cans and cooking utensils.

  • I'm glad that you actually notice when we're getting sun glare and adjust on the fly, editing makes the vid jumpy but yours is quite fluid.

  • id like to know how to keep snakes away. in my day in the military i didnt think bout it that much but have sence been snake bit while primitive camping and now i cant stand a dang snake. any clues or suggestions please p.m. me.

  • That was ment to be "videos" not posts

  • Thanks for these posts they are really informative and real

  • Thanks a lot for the vids. I am 54 and just getng back to out doors. have had a lg.alice@frame , did not know what to do with it, I live in s. florida and most packs are to hot.i tride this out on a short walk about 6 mile and it works like a charm. hay by the way both my son and i are of your web sit and your show with cody . my son ,20 has tacond to hiking bare footed.not me tinder foot. keep up the good work.

  • Fantastic. I've always been a fan of the ALICE system. I guess 21 years will make you biased. I couldn't agree more about wool. It's been around for centuries for a reason.

  • a waterproof material sown on one side would be cool. then u could use it as a warm shelter if u get caught in the rain

  • 3:14 What are you talking about? Make me a link to it (copy it) PLS

  • Did'nt Sir Edmund Hilary climb Everest wearing pretty much nothing but wool clothing and leather boots? Wool rocks! Thanks for the vids Mr Canterbury, Ive learned a lot.

  • Cotton better in hot weather? Wrong. Cotton is the worst fabric for any active use. Especially in rain and water sports. Cotton retains hundreds of times its weight in water, and takes for ever to dry. So if you will be in a canoe, rain, or sweat...ixnay on the cotton.

  • @OperationTho r lol cotton retains hundreds of times its weight is that not what you want when its hot . You sweat the cotton retains the sweat the air hits the wet cotton and cools your body. Makes sense to me .

  • @kringle02 No becasue soaking wet cotton; chafs, and is heavy and has no insulating capabilities, which you want even if its hot (lets say you go up in altitude, it gets cloudy or night comes or its windy). Which is why no high performance anything will use cotton. Hense the use of synthetics AKA underarmor. Trust me I work in the outdoor industry selling clothes to backpackers hikers, trail runners etc etc. Sure cotton is fine for average daily use but thats it.

  • @OperationThor OK then go to the amazon jungle here with underamour and prepare to suffer. I prefer cotton and especially wool than those synthetic fibers any time of the day.

  • @squathacker Wool is better as it still insulates while wet unlike cotton. But synthetics are far better for both sun protection, light weight packing, moisture managment and rashes. There is a reason tactical equipment is nylon not wool lol. And troops where cotton uniforms as it is cheap! But then again most try to where a synthetic poly-anything under like underarmor. Tryed and tru. In hot weather I suggest a poly"x"/nylon blend long sleeve with ventilation. Or stick with the 5$ cotton shirt!

  • where can i find the straps you used to attach everything to the frame?

  • But if you got a complete Large ALICE pack from ebay @ $20 you could just throw all your crap in there and just go without special strapping or mounting.

  • The shoulder straps are back wards The lower part under the padding is supposed to angle out not in.

  • Wool has its place.Wool socks I like.If u look at cleaning instructions its a real pain in the ass to clean in the field. The reason I like socks is u are going to get wet feet and the socks are easier to clean. U cant wring out wool, u can only sqeeze it out gently and then it has to lay flat on somthing dry.U cant hang it because this stretches the wool and then it looses heat retention abilities. I dont want to nock Dave this is my opinion from research have found.

  • This is a pretty good video, thanks :o)

My alice pack medium, contains 24 cans of beer, a bag of peanuts and my teddy bear.

If you can't survive with that then there's no hope.

  • Yep, can't beat wool. Years ago I used to wash cars for a living at a car dealership, including in winter. I have tried every kind of sock out there. Including every kind of waterproof boot. Which BTW, there isn't such a thing. Rubber is, but it breaks down fast when used hard. Nothing beats 100% wool. Especially when wet.

  • wool is the best by far my grand parents used to own a sheep farm and my mom greew up there too but i we were forced to move out do to the construction of the highway 407 in milton/mississauga ontario but anyways it was ran threw my family to know that wool is very very warm and because of its lose fibres when its sown it has wholes in it wich allows it to keep you cool and it is very strong and it duznt get soaked like cotton its a very good material the only problem is that is itchy

  • Dave you are so correct about wool socks they are the best I love them because when I was trucking OTR I would carry 3 pair of socks only needed 2 but 3 JIC I would wear a pair and have a cleaned pair hanging to dry. Wool socks will dry faster than any other sock I have ever owned. I would wash them when I showered with shampoo.hang them to dry in the window of the truck.

  • Need a name for the system?... How about: "The Canterbury Ruck".

  • @DesertFox9103 Yeah, that sounds good. The "Canterbury Modular Ruck"

    Go Dave!

  • OMG! I just noticed your the guy from Dual Survival!!!!! You're freaking AWESOME!!!!!

  • Hi I just bought my self a large Alice pack and I got a question, once I open the top pouch that covers the main compartment the inside of the flap feels tacky. I've tried washing it and still feels sticky. Dose any body have any sugestions

  • Dave Cantebury is one impressive dude.

  • Well poly propylyn keeps %70 of its insulation and I can't use wool because I'm alergic.

  • WHOA! IS that Dave Canteberry from dual survival?

  • Awesome presentation!

  • Great tip Dave! Thanks!!

  • Great video! Thanks for the good information!

  • whats in your 10 piece kit? is there a video?

  • @joemista try the pathfinder concepts 2 vid

  • NICE!!

  • If you have your blanket in a plastic bag,it might not look so cool, but it won`t get wet if it rains.

  • wool rocks

  • i love my ALICE pack!!!!!!

  • Only one thing you are missing in your layer 3 kit. A tactical tomahawk. One thing I could suggest is an Estwing shingle hammer. All you would have to do to it is sharpen the cutting edge of the blade. They are forged tool steel and of very high quality. For around $30 at Lowe's or Home Depot, it can't be beat in my opinion.

  • Hey, Dave

I keep going into your website but I can't get to your merchandise area.

  • @zzbunch his merchandise is now on thecanteenshop he made an update video telling us that thecanteenshop is the name of the website. hope this helped

  • Your right about the wool

  • That is a great set up! If you can maybe you should use that set up on one episode of the discovery show.

  • I have affixed a bit of home made net—one made out of Para cord—to the frame which allows me to hitch on various other items to the net. Dave, of course, made a short video on net making that will guide you.

  • do the frames weigh alot? They look metal and heavy so i am just wondering.

  • The frames are quite light. And if they break, which is unlikely, they are easy to repair to like new condition with a few bolts or rivets.

  • how would you attach an axe and you knife to the frame the way you did with the maxpetition pack

  • Please see my comment concerning a net. You might like to experiment with such a setup.

  • Wool is the best for the money. But don't discredit silk. It retains heat incredibly well wet or dry. It just can be costly.

    Here's a tip:

Every time you go to a place like Good Will or Value Village, take a peek at the ugly silk shirts and snag the ones with stains that only set you back a few bucks. Get enough of them- can make just about anything.

  • Damn! Its going to sound like Im working for Dave, but Im not. I just want to advise you that the Molle pack he is selling is an absolute steal! Get one or more while you can. Prices are going through the roof, as quick trip through Gander Mountain and Cabela stores will illustrate.

Those stores leave me shaking my head. You cant even get extra sling shot bands at my local Gander Mountain. Oh well.

  • In my view, this video is among the best Dave has ever presented. The pack configuration shown here is outstanding. And the price is unbelievably low. Anyone who poo poos this setup simply doesnt know what he is talking about.

I just cant recommend this setup highly enough. I know I love mine.

  • Do you use this set up personaly?

  • I do indeed use it--and often. I find it to be an absolutely "top rung" setup. The net/frame pack combination rocks!

  • the shoulder straps look like they are on the wrong side....ie left is on the right.....right is on the left....

    Hell On Wheels

  • what video is your fire kit outlined in?

I am curious what you keep in yours

  • put this under the wrong video but those frame rails looks like a good place for tape fishing line and paracord. keep up the good work dave.

  • Dave, what happened to the original 10 piece and 20 piece videos? I see that you revisited the 10 piece, why not the 20 piece?

  • 79th comment:)

  • Hey Dave,

I spent 15 years using a wool blanket in the military and never needed any thing else no matter what the weather was. To quote Cody "Party on"

  • got the pathfinder tarp, one word awesome, use it every time im in the woods.

  • thank you for posting all of your videos they have given me so many ideas to try

and i take my hat off to you for your common man series

  • i like wool.

    wool power!

  • very nice

  • Dave, I visited the military surplus stores here in Hawaii and could not find the alice pack with frame at the price listed on your website, so I ordered one. Can't wait for it to get here. Mahalo for the idea with the frame. will be using a similar system. I know it's probable not possible, but please see what you could do about the shipping cost to hawaii. Thanks

  • so i was messing around with the alice pack I just got and on the right strap it looks like there is a quick release latch on it. I can't figure out how exactly to put it back together and there isn't one on the left strap to reference. could you make a 30 second video on how to put that thing back together?

  • slip the little oval ring into the big oval ring, then slip the clip into the little ring from the top.

Ur right its a comabt release clip for dumping your pack.

  • thanks bud, I was pretty close but not quite right. appreciate you getting back to me

    Steve

  • hey Dave, I was off yesterday and trolled around some army surplus stores and found a large alice pack with the frame for 30 bucks. its got some stains, and repaired holes on it but it looks like it's gonna last forever. thanks for the advice

  • 2000th viewer

  • hope u make it on Discovery that's almost all i watch.

  • Dear Dave, I have been trolling your vids for quite awhile now and have finally decided to subscribe. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I will be applying to Pathfinder school in the near future also. Thanks and keep up the good work.

  • Dave, my father was born in 1940 and as a young adult he wore wool when ocean spear fishing, as he did not have a neoprene rubber wet suit. To cover his legs he wore a pullover upside down and another over his top as normal. He devised a belt system to join the two and entered the water insulated as best as possible. Better then nothing and it may have assisted in covering up bright reflective skin so he could wait in ambush to spear large fish at close range.

  • Two things I've done with the ALICE frame is two wrap it with paracord (keeps it quiet), and if you find the frame a uncomfortable, two-three pieces of closed cell foam ground pad cut to fit and then held down with a cinch strap or two. That will give you a LOT of cordage if you need it, and the ground pad is good when the ground is cold.

  • I love tactical tailor! Great equipment!

    thanks for the vids!

  • seen a lot of the vietnam soldiers carry their packs broke down like that in some of the history channel shows

  • Great defense of the wool blanket. I swear by mine, too. I take it everywhere and use it for everything. I don't even own a sleeping bag, anymore. Excellent video, as always. Keep up the good work.

  • hey dave! why don't you post the place where you sell this gear! i got a bunch of hunting buddies that would probley buy about 2 each for deer and elk hunting. i mean this is just great! you can take your gear there, carry guns, carry meat, and its walking so you can get to places where a 4 wheeler can't. keep up the awsome work dave. im a huge fan.

  • Its in the upper right hand corner of the page in blue, by the yellow "subscribe" button

  • We've used wool pants and jackets for years - they keep you warm when everything else has packed it in.

Great system dave - and best of all the entire system costs less than some of the 'designer' packs out there cost all by themselves!

  • I got my large ALICE pack with frame in the early 90s and it has never let me down. People may laugh at my old-fashioned load carrying system, but it works fine and will continue to do so for many more years.

  • Yep, that does it, an ALICE pack is deffinately on my shopping list now!

Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the common man's kit vids, it is very helpful to hear from someone who knows thier stuff that good gear can still be had for cheap. With money like it is today I just can't afford to go out and spend 200 on a bag, 300 on a knife, etc.

  • Thanx for another great video, Dave.

How much room is there between the Alice frame and your back? I mean, the greater that distance is the more your load pulls you backward and you have to bend over to correct (straining your lower-back muscels).

Is that hip-strap (thing) adjustable so that you can let the frame come closer to your back?

And does the frame touch your shoulders or does it stick out over your shoulders?

Can you show it while wearing it, that would clearify a lot I guess.

  • the pad on the top of the pack, with the frame in it, is on your shoulders, the straps are 100% adjustable, the hip pad is about 3 inches from the pack, and it has a tensioning strap. Its best to keep it as tight as possible, its a very comfortable pack... it has a slight angle keeping the weight tipped twords you, rather than away...just slightly

  • US WWII wool blankets on ebay for 15-30 bucks. Still in great shape. Wool is heavy, but very warm, and can take a beating.

  • I looked at surplus wool blankets on ebay as well as Maine and New Hampshire. I ended up getting it from Dave and am very happy with it. Brand new no patches or tears and only 35 bucks. Shipping was several weeks was only issue but well worth it.

Never used a wool blanket hiking before but i am sold on it know

  • Wool is the best material..also dont have to worry about gettin holes burnt in it while sittin next to the fire like some of these poly type "outdoor" items.

  • Every one I know says wool is good. And cowboys used bed rolls and thats the same kind a thing, I think. You can still buy bed rolls, they look interesting.

That is a cool pack. Gosh I am such a girl I would pack in my teddy bear. Note to self : " Leave it at home girl! Must fight nesting instinct." I camp like I am starting a new civilization.

Oooo I like the carving on your knife handle!

  • Do you have to sleep fully clothed under the wool due to itching??

  • if it bothers you it'd be a good idea. I NEVER get undressed outside my own home. if i have to move quick all i want to do is grab my pack, blanket and untie my tarp and go. thats where knowing knots really pays off.

  • Sound advice..

  • it all depends how tired you are, and how sensitive your skin is. Ive never had an issue with mine

  • are you trying to sell a product? cause ide buy it! keep it up! what is the max weight limit for that? would it be good for carrying a field dressed deer?

  • I have used them in Colorado to carry Elk Quarters before, they are a good item, I do sell the frames but you can buy them anywhere.

  • @wildernessoutfitters I gott'a say, I've been thinking about buying the classic ALICE system for a long time. I've been tempted but I've heard a few mixed reviews. I can see that you're a very skilled bushcrafter, and I admire your excitement in products like this. So would you say taht the oldschool Alice (medium) system is worth the money? And how hard is it to fix things to it that aren't designed to be attached?

I love how basic and such the ALICE is, but I've heard it's uncomfortable?

  • max weight/ of an alice frame, standard straps...hmmm....200+? do you want when the straps break, or the frame bends?

  • great job .this is close to what i have set up already .thanks dave

  • pls ignore haters they gain power as you lose it and ur top notch 5* d.c. has 2 pick u u know ur shit and will pawn the rest id trust you over any one else

  • Why is Under Armour not a good idea in the summer time?

The only thing I've heard about Under Armour not being a good idea is with extreme heat, like in fire, because the material will fuse into your skin.

  • Actually many of these products work so well at wicking they remove more than normal moisture from you body especially if they fit tight and increase the chance of dehydration where as cotton just gets wet and then actually cools your body!

  • @LooseLatitude It wicks away moisture which is good in winter. Summer time cotton is good because it holds moisture which cools off your body.

  • @mrouterrim I work in a building with no cooling and machines that pump out heat and steam. It gets 5-10 degrees hotter than the outside temp and in summer it gets an average high 90s and can get up into the 100s easily. I used to wear a normal cotton tshirt and switched over to moisture wicking. I stay cooler and dryer with the moisture wicking.

I noticed with cotton is that the more sweat it holds the less it breathes and it holds more heat in. That does not happen with moisture wicking...

  • @mrouterrim ...Sweat cools the body in ideal conditions but when it's not it sucks. If it's really humid out sweat is not going to evaporate so it's just holding heat in because it's insulating your skin from the air. The other thing is sweating more than you can evaporate off. You than have more sweat than what's being evaporated again insulating the heat.

The thing about moisture wicking is that it gets the sweat off your skin letting it breathe. I like moisture wicking better.

  • I think these uses and attributes make the lowly chopstick a great choice and worthy of consideration. FYI.

  • Dave I wanted to pass on to you and your viewers a tip I got from a friend. Why not try disposable bamboo chop sticks for tent stakes. I got turned on to them when trying to reduce the weight of my versa shelter. They weigh nothing are free or very cheap and they have multiple uses. Ill list some here. 1 Tent/guy line stakes. 2 Kindling/feather sticks. 3 Cooking/eating utensils. 4 Chop sticks are easy to pack and store.

  • I would call that a kiss system 5 stars dave!

  • if discovery had a brain they would definately let you on.

  • Good luck with the Discovery stuff, Dave.

I'm fixin' to get my hands on an ALICE system this summer from a surplus store, just have to make the effort to drive halfway across the state (Maine) to get it!

I've seen those blankets online. I'm sure after watching more of your vids I'll be fixin' to get one of them too!

  • Great video and again another reason I like Alice gear. I like your setup and will look into this more.

Im using Alice M16 pouches on a web belt as med kits, food kits and also for my shotgun ammo and AR or AK 20 round mags.

I have these zip tied so I can easly move them off and put new ones on great system.

  • hey dave how effective do you think a 7.62x39 is against a bear?

  • I have used it on black bear but im not sure about brown bear or grizzly bear. But I have droped decent size black bear with it easy. Im sure if you put half of a mag. (15rounds) through a brown or grizz im sure it will drop lol I have also used that round to drop elk and wild boar and deer so i say its a pretty good multi use round.

  • well i use my ak as a trail gun with my 40 round mag, and i though, wouldent this just piss off a bear? i dont think i could get off more than three or four shots before the bear get me so darn.

  • I dont think you could even get off that many, since most times, the bear will be close, not running from afar, if the bear decides to attack you, that would mean that it is close, like 20 feet or so.

Running at say 35MPH, even at 50 feet away, the bear hits you in 1 second, at 20 feet away, its less than half a second.

I dont even think you could blink and realise what is happening, let alone grab your gun, aim and shoot.

    Just saying dont disillusion yourself.

  • then ill use the 12 guage slugs and pray, or the 300 winmag

  • Again, do you think that you can bring to bear, aim, fire, and hit, in less than 1 second, especially with a huge angry loud and fast bear coming down on you?

I am not trying to be an ass, just saying a lot of people are under a lot of false impressions when it comes to bears.

  • well im in northern washington and spend alot of time in alaska with family, and when it comes to bears i dont act all stealthy in the forest, so the few times i have seen them they are about 50-100 meters. and spending two years in fort lewis with my dad i have done a bit of shooting drills so i know for a fact i can ready my weapon and shoot in a 1, to 1.3 seconds, one aimed shot. i shoot alot. so if i got one second and i know its coming then that bear is getting one in the lungs.

  • Another good job Dave. 5/5

  • I've been using an Italian wool blanket over a sleeping bag ever since I first saw Dave's Versa-Shelter videos. I love it! In fact, it's a cool night right now and the blanket is wrapped around me!

  • I've used my wool blanket as a cooler one day wile camping worked great it was like 90 outside

  • Comment removed

  • Great Video!

  • When you are watering and feeding horses in -40 degree weather, you quickly realize how good wool is when you get soaked. It takes about 15 seconds for water to freeze. Wool is the only material that I trust when it gets that cold and there is a possibility of getting wet.

  • The alice frame, it has a little "shelf" between the back brace, and the frame, just a metal bar of a shelf, but i find it a convenient place to "shove" certain things during a hike, a bag of food, a very reachable knife, or what have you, Again, the Alice frame is too simple to fail

Good Job on all your Video's, you are Inspiring, and Im sure have already saved lives threw knowledge, you are a Saint, you deserve statues

  • Comment removed

  • Excellant video Dave 5*

Good luck with the Discovery channel.

  • I adore my wool blanket.

I think one thing about it, is its "shell" capabilities, it does stop 100% of wind, well mine does anyways

Ill winter hike/camp in northern WI/MN, and ill just take my large wool blanket, and 2 fleece blankets...its also what ill sleep with at home, there is nothing warmer

4 people i know that have never given me any flack about my wool, are my grandparents

  • I'm not down with the under armor but I do roll the molle 2

  • also you have plenty of room for a mosin nagant, 22 or shot gun plus the ammo

  • FINALLY, SOME ORIGINAL THINKING! In my view, the ALICE PACK FRAME RULES! Screw the internal pack ! Im carrying a pack similar to yours Dave, and it works great. Love the wool blanket!

  • awsome

  • Dave, don't let them fret you on the blanket. I always keep a wool fleece blanke/ sleeping bag that has gromits and pole holes laced in, and i've been using it for nearly 8 or 9 years, and always catch flack. People always think there set up is better. If it works for me and I know how to use it to full potental thats good enough for me.

  • ready to rock'n'roll - with not much more than you've been showing us in the first vids. 5*s!

  • great video

everytime i think i know what i am going to use you come up with another great idea

i see you did some modifications to your knife

i would like to hear about them

  • you don't sell your tarp as a separate item do you?

because I can't find it if it's there.

if you don't, can you please direct me to a company(preferably in canada but not necessary) that does supply silnylon tarps similar to the pathfinder tarp, thank you.

  • Check out Mountain equipment Co-Op, they have the "Scout" tarp for $64 in silnylon or $35 in polyurethane coated. The poly one is actually more waterproof, but a bit heavier 700gm vs 483 for the sil.

I've been using the poly one for years, its a great tarp for solo or twosomes

  • A million Civil War soldiers could not be wrong about the wool blanket. Another great video! Definately like that Alice pack set up.

  • Cool concept, I've actually got an ALICE frame around here that's just kind of sitting there, maybe I'll try this out...

  • nice

  • I love the old Alice packs.

I need a new one as mine is old and half warn out.

  • Poor Dave, that sun just didn't like you!

  • Excellent as always Dave! Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us!

  • you can also use that frame to make a stretcher if you need to.

  • i would love to have a wool blanket iv been looking at the millitary issue ones. Also i ordered a medium alice pack and im looking for a cheap frame with the shelf

  • You probably will not find them together, they are usually a seperate TA Item.

  • italian military blankets are the best out there, they cost a little more though.
