See kids all ya gotta do to get this good at guitar is to do lots and lots of heroin, slip into a coma, and WAHMO your a guitar legend!... Oh and dont forget to celebrate by doing more heroin after you completed the final step. - Franks story
I seen Frank at Cobo Hall in 1981. I had to because I bought the Mahogany Rush Live album. My favorite of his still to this day. The pentatonic scale king right up there with Gary Moore IMO. What I found unique about Frank is his high energy and ability to create those sound scapes of a concert atmosphere.
Usually, somebody says they're gonna do an extended 6 minute jam/solo section, it's time to go to the toilets and take a piss or go by more beer. With this.... rarely you see so much ass being kicked as here.
Frank is not a neo-classical axeman so he should not be compared with Yngwie, Blackmore, or any other guy really. The old Hendrix-grave-robbing accusations included.
This reminds me of the show I went to a few years ago in Atlanta, when Frank played the Variety Playhouse in Little Five Points. There were only 53 of us there in the whole place. Frank opened with "Land of a thousand nights" and just kept playing and playing. I was in very front, and after five songs had to retreat to the back. Got so loud that I finished listening to the show in the lobby. Unbelievable. He played them all, even stuff I didn't he'd play. Great to see him again!
Masterful Performance!!! Is this" The Man" or what?? Franks' Hyperspeed Melodic Blurple Sonic Spaceship is WICKED!!! Sounds AWESOME!!! Incredible Fretboard Work!!! Frank Marino RULZ!!! MONSTER!!!!!!!!
I remember an interview were Frank was asked if he ever met SRV and I recall Frank saying something like he ran into him back stage at some point and Frank said hi to Stevie but Stevie kinda stared at Frank and said nothing. I don't think Stevie was being rude or anything like that, Stevie was too much of kind soul for that, I think he was just dumbfounded and awestruck. And I must say the first time I saw these guys was at the Swing Auditorium 1978 and that show left me feeling the same way.
I have several of his albums, but never had a chance to see him live.
This is the first live video I have seen. He is as good as I thought he would be.

I wanna know what his trick was for using that whammy bar with the open nut and still having it stay in tune. He had it figured out how to use a whammy with an open nut and keep it in tune bfore VanHalen ever hit the scene. I've got a new Gibson Custom Shop 62 reissue SG with that same type tremolo but if I just touch it it will throw it out of tune. I've used the Nut Sauce stuff on the nut to lube the strings up top but it only helped a bit. Maybe I just need to break it in real good,

Ya know what...loads of guitarists nowadays think they play fast... BOLLOCKS! There is only one FRANK MARINO..I love you frank ..keep on playing your damn fine music...
In '78 @ the football stadium in Orlando Fla with a full capacity crowd absolutely in a trance to his SG delivering Thunder and Earthquaking FEEDBACK He shook the stadium and the crowd swayed like waves under His CONTROL Hi Power is an understatement Thanks Frank.M.
Long Live Greasy Guitar,
Actualy Frank Marino is not really from here He is one of the Space People sent here to enlighten us about the higher plane all you have to do is put on the headphones.....
i guess Frank got a univibe and an octavia-and put them to good use- back in the 70s when they were available. This guy was, and still is- sick, crazy, stupid good!!!!
Octavia and a Univibe?.....jesus.. you walk up to a stack and plug that in with the miked volume he was playing? he did even more dangerous things than that.....walk up to the same stack and plug in treble boost and make it work with a phase 90 shifter......i still don't get it...... have no freaking idea!
Actually Frank built his own device to produce the octave-boost effect. He is very clever with electronics, in fact after he dropped out of the music biz for a while he was building computers in his basement for a living.
@Whooligan86 I saw Frank open for Ted Nugent in 1978 in Boston Garden sold out!!! Ted was on his Stae of Shock tour at that time. Man O Man, What a CRAZY show IT WAS!!! WHEWWWWWWWWW HOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
Frank is one of the forgotten greats,he's just as good as all these other guys that get all the credit, but you never hear his name mentioned whenever VH1 classic or Rolling has thier greatest guitarists of all time surveys.
Frank Marino is great, true, Frank Zappa was a God...Zappa was from another planet...and played with zircon encrusted tweezers that he sterilized first.....
I must correct you all. The beginning is a carbon copy of Johnny Winter. A somewhat pale one, though quite competent but I was later surprised by the beautifully original nunaces I heard once it moved forward. Nice stuff.
And they want us to listen to 80s / 90s and 00s so called music ........!!!???? It's true ROCK N ROLL was murdered by the man in early 80s (with some exception like SRV "true legend) . I'm 25 BTW , I wish I was born at least in 1960 or so at least ...... Frank Marino is not from this world !!!

This guy was, and still is- sick, crazy, stupid good!!!!
scard1030 2 years ago
Octavia and a Univibe?.....jesus.. you walk up to a stack and plug that in with the miked volume he was playing? he did even more dangerous things than that.....walk up to the same stack and plug in treble boost and make it work with a phase 90 shifter......i still don't get it...... have no freaking idea!

Actually Frank built his own device to produce the octave-boost effect. He is very clever with electronics, in fact after he dropped out of the music biz for a while he was building computers in his basement for a living.

The best verson of this song I have ever heard. Smokes Hendrix.
BigMouthAmerican 2 years ago
I must correct you all. The beginning is a carbon copy of Johnny Winter. A somewhat pale one, though quite competent but I was later surprised by the beautifully original nunaces I heard once it moved forward. Nice stuff.
PatrickKingPhl 2 years ago
yes marino is a big fan of johnny winter.
christianplysgtr 2 years ago
patrick king bang on, even down to the rythm which is like a hybrid Derringer/Floyd crawford. Franks is good on his own merits too
db1coop 2 years ago
This is less a cover of Chuck Berry, and more a cover of Hendrix's version of the song, what with the increase in tempo and overall playing style.

way way way too fast. You can't enjoy it like that. A lot of the blusy parts are lost in the speed. Good Jam, no question, but too fast formy taste.
