I was lucky to have seen this live. It was an amazing game, probably the best game I've ever seen in my life. Stockton, Malone, Jordan and Pippen were all unbelievable, but nobody talks much about the other guys; Jeff Hornecek, Steve Kerr, Tony Kukoch... Those guys played great ball too. I know it's been said before, but you really don't see intensity like this in games anymore.
im glad i was 2 years old wen this was happeing and not watching basketball yet cuz ppl who didnt like the bulls it had to be annoying to see them running the 90's
watching this game I"m glad the NBA changed their rules to encourage easier scoring and discourage physical interaction between combatants. All that intense defense just leads to hard feelings and a bunch of guys losing their cool due to their heightened competitiveness. This put the emphasis too much on the ecstasy of winning and agony of losing instead of where it should be, guys being able to get open perimeter shots and basically uncontested drives to the basket. Thank you David Stern
@farneyblakeley respect your point of view but this is what competition is about even today in key matchups between teams referees acknowledge that and let players go at it more physically, just sayin these touch fouls and flagrant 1s and 2s are a waste of time let them play more physical, look up the game Bulls vs Rockets 98 Jordan 45 Barkley 35 and they went at it and nobody would've liked it any different
@farneyblakeley im gonna take that as a dumbass remark... are you SERIOUS. look at the score from this game, and look at how intense it was start to finish. the nba these days is a JOKE sucking on kobe and lebrons nuts.
I remember that Jordan 3-pointer attempt in the end. I didn't expect him to make it since he just threw it up so hurriedly. Oh well, we did take the next 2 games.
It's funny. This was the lowest scoring game in NBA Finals history and yet it's probably one of the most exciting. Proof that you don't need a ton of points to produce an amazing game.
Good god that crowd is AMAZING. I have never, ever seen a crowd that frenzied before. Sitting in the lower bowl in a crowd like that, you can't even hear yourself yelling at the top of your lungs.
That was a terrible call on MJ at 9:18...MJ got all ball with that block on Stockon...People always say that the refs help MJ out well thats wrong...The ref made it in his mind to call a foul when MJ went for the block...The refs were helping out the Jazz in this one cuz the Bulls had this game won
What about where Stock got clearly fouled by Harper when he buried his 3? That would've been 1 extra point the Jazz missed out on and the Jazz gained a freebie when Stock made 1/2 after that foul. It all evened out, the Jazz made the plays down the stretch and the Bulls didn't.
I am from China, and I am studying in Canada right now. I am a huge fan of Stockton!!! I wish I can see him someday. Anyone knows where I can find him . Thanks !!
Bison Dele A.K.A. Brian Williams was a good mid season acquisition for Chicago back 97'. A big man who blocked shots, put the ball on the floor, rebound, and score.
yeah RIP Brian Williams. I loved that guy in this series. Cant remember which game it was but he went right up in Malone's face.. and pussy ass Mailman backed down obviously - cos it was somebody his own size
the bulls took 97' 98' championships cause utah didn't had any nba finals experience before,if they did .i believe those 2 there will be theirs ,no doubt
Interestingly enough, the 1997 and 1998 Finals had a total of nine of the 12 combined games decided by five points or less, and six of the nine went to the Bulls. So looking back, had a few things gone the other way, Utah would have won one or even both of those titles.
The Mailman choked both years. Game 1 in 97 when he missed those free throws at the end. Game 5 in 97 when he refused to foul out after Ostertag put them within 1 point of the bulls which could've gave them a chance to win the game still after blowing a 16 point lead.
thats why MJ is the GOAT, even that missed trey at the end was phenominal, for all the plays when some thought MJ shouldnt have got the call, that call on Stockton wasnt a foul, that was a clean 2 hand block
MJ almost made that last three. That, and the last shot he took in Game 4 at Indiana in the 98 ECF. The ball did pretty much everything except stay down.
I still get goose bumps when MJ is running on that break away @ 8:40. I just knew the Bulls were going to win, and I remember being pissed after they lost that game
Jazz didn't stand a chance at the series though with Bavetta reffing! Did you see him slap Jordan on the ass at the 8:08 mark? Bavetta has a mancrush on Jordan
Man, they don't make NBA Finals like that any more...look at those fans. I fell asleep in the 1st quarter of each game of these last Finals. The word "Pathetic" comes to mind AND it was the two teams the NBA loves to showcase the MOST Celtics, Lakers.... Zzzz Zzzzz ZZzzzzz snooze-fest.
Keep bringing them man! I'm reliving all of these moments. The Bulls were a great team, not fancy at all but great team defense and of course MJ and the great team player that was Scottie Pippen.
The last two stretches of the game were spurts (Chicago was up 71-66 with a 10-1 run on Jordan's Breakaway dunk and Stockton's three pointer sparked a 12-2 run to win the game. Scary!!!!
'The Utah Jazz have defeated the Chicago Bulls'. Marv Albert is the voice of the NBA finals. Marv, Van Gundy, replace Mark Jackson with Bill walton would help raise the NBA finals ratings. MJ last 3 point attempt was a beauty, going to his right and fading away even when he missed, the shot still look awesome and still had a chance of going in.
The lefty finger roll off the fake in the post against Russell is amazing, as is the behind-the-backboard jumper and the dribble jab step, between the legs, pump-fake jumper at the top of the key. The jumper as he comes across the lane where he raises up really high is incredible. There'll never be anyone better. 34 years old here.
yea amazing jump on that shot. he was definitely slowing in general in the second 3peat but he keeps his'jump shoot' jumping ability when he was old. about the tenacity of defense, it was crazy that the bulls has two guys like that, pippen was if not better, just almost as good as mj on those coming from behind blocks, although mj's timing on block is incomparable.
That breakaway "foul" by Jordan was shown on two replays to be a clean block, and Walton/Goukas were adamant that no foul should have been called there. It's amazing the ground MJ covered there, and it shows his tenacity. How many stars today would make that play with a speedy PG already off to the races with a head start rather than sit there and bitch at the refs for a call? Maybe Lebron...
from the normal angle is a foul because of mj's body slamming on to stockton's. but yes indeed the block is really clean and it happened before the body contact, i dont know much about how they would call that, it is a tough one to decide.
It amazes me that anyone could be concerned about that call, considering how many calls Chicago got in general, and in particular against the Jazz in both Finals.
But then again, I suppose that is convenient dissembling and obfuscation -- i.e. "Look! The Bulls was screwed!"
Yeah, that missed 3 at the end by Jordan was heartbreaking. It's amazing how he even almost hits the game-winners he misses lol. That reminds me of the shot that rimmed out against Indiana in the '98 ECF after Reggie hit that 3 to put the Pacers up. Just incredibly close.
