@clatn75 One of the problems is that even if a rapper or hip hop group wants to put out something that has a message or is political, the labels won't sign them and radio stations won't play it. It's like there's a mandate from the corporate and media worlds to only promote only negative, self-degrading hip hop. They don't want music from groups like A Tribe Call Quest, Brand Nubian, Public Ememy, Grandmaster Flash etc to ever become popular again. Then Gil's Revolution would surely begin.
Then more of those conscious rappers need to step up on the business end and start their own lables. Much of the gangsta rap was put out by artist who owned their own lables or belonged to independent lables that catered to that style of music(Ruthless,No Limit,Sick Wit It,Suave House etc).

When blacks find obstacles in starting businesses that are related to the colour of their skin, they can be moved to force changes in a system when finding a common ground across all the discriminated people. Well one problem I see with political/conscious rap music is that it's appeal can be limited because the messages many of these artist come with may not appeal to everyone. Political artist are coming with certain views on race,economics,history and gender that many consumers may or may not agree with. I prefer undergound artist who aren't overly political myself.

But you should keep in mind or acknowledge that the influence of conscious music can be a mixed bag. Because different people listening to the music can get something different from it. It's like there's a mandate from the corporate and media worlds to only promote only negative, self-degrading hip hop. Prophet. I don't think he really took in the full implication of those words "TRWNBT". I may not have agreed with his lifestyle at times, but this man made a great impact on how I perceive the world. The original album is one of my favorites of all time. 4 those who don't know there is more 2 him than spoken word. Humanity lost one of the greatest (revolutionary-change agent) minds of our time...but the words-music-vibe-lessons will live on. peace my brother.

This guy was a thinking man, but black music took a serious dive after the Rap and hip-hop bling/blame culture became entrenched sometime in the 90s (hard to pinpoint).
Gangsta cRap music surely won't bring about any revolution worth participating in. It just drags people down. All the comforts of America that thugs take for granted would vanish in a week if their mentality ruled the whole nation. They are parasites of the lowest order.

Ain't no "revolution" coming through music anyway. People put too much dependence on music to change things. Want to see Black people lives improve? Then more Blacks need to start businesses,spend more of their dollars with those businesses,utilized Black owned banks more,learn to invest money,give more money to the UNCF. This is what Blacks need more of and not more conscious music necessarily. What can more conscious music do for unemployed Black men?

@CrowdPleeza a song can spark a revolution though. Like he says in this video, there needs to be something that changes your perspective on things. When blacks find obstacles in starting businesses that are related to the colour of their skin, they can be moved to force changes in a system when finding a common ground across all the discriminated people. A song most likely will not be the reason for revolt, but can be a breeding ground. So that's where you are wrong.

More conscious music makes for empowerment of the mind, and puts the hundreds of millions of dollars being thrown at entertainers into the hands of artist who wanna give back to the community (instead of some selfish party animal in his second childhood). Put little dewaynes money in the hands of someone with a brain and he goes back to the neighborhoods that need help and builds businesses.

Well one problem I see with political/conscious rap music is that it's appeal can be limited because the messages many of these artist come with may not appeal to everyone. Political artist are coming with certain views on race,economics,history and gender that many consumers may or may not agree with. I prefer undergound artist who aren't overly political myself.

@CrowdPleeza I agree with most of what you've said except the bit about the UNCF, we need High schools and Elementary schools!Since most kids can chose(especially being driven toward diversity ) the UNCF may not do as well, due to the fact that less blacks are attending predominately black institutions ,since brown vs the board !Secondly ,promoting more conscious music and images never hurt us as a people.It's definitely a lot better than most music on the airwaves.

@CrowdPleeza start a businesses with what dollars? if you know 498 other people to invest two hundred dollars into one business then you might have something, I'd be down. Never underestimate the power of influence art can have. It simply motivates people plus it's also been a way for a cultures to reach out to eachother. i just dont get why anyone would question approaching everything we do with consciousness except when it comes to sleep.

But you should keep in mind or acknowledge that the influence of conscious music can be a mixed bag. Because different people listening to the music can get something different from it. Many people may or may not agree with every conscious artist's viewpoint. I don't agree with those conscious rappers who reflect a Marxist viewpoint.

I personally have many problems with Marxism, we don't need authoritarian figures anymore, they just end up becoming thought-less thugs like the police that are on our streets. But that's my opinion, you may not agree with it but it's based on my life experiences and reflection of as are your opinions. In the end we gain a wider perception of human life. i'd rather hear you than a business
