I believe that Englishmen were given civil treatment while ethnic Chinese were given harsh treatment. Some Indians were given the opportunity to actually join the Japanese side. The war was not against the British but rather, a clean out of all ethnic Han Chinese expats in Southeast Asian.

That´s because those aren´t countries as such, but British territories,. There is a BIG difference between a colony, and a country that decides to be part of an economic alliance. My grandmother live on the river banks of Sungai Perak in those days. Japanese embarked Teluk Intan by Sungai Perak, while The British says Japs will come via the Sungai Perak bridge about 4oo yards from her house. british destroyed the bridge and stupidly wait for the japs at the bridge. Actually, the British sent lots of troops to Singapore. They even sent some ships. However, they lost due to some reasons such as poor leadership. Thats what I remember from my history lesson. :P

@XpolarstormX Wasn't just poor leadership, it was the fact that the British high command decided against sending battle changing equipment such as tanks. Instead of sending tanks/planes to Singapore/Hong Kong they were sent to the USSR. The Japanese were well trained in jungle warfare, were as most British troops would of never even seen a jungle never mind fought in one. Britain was short of equipment through the early years and it was seen as more important to send spare supplies to the USSR.

The Japanese were very short on supplies and were outnumbered 3/1, it was lack of tanks/planes and intelligence that lost the battle. When the British finally learned how to fight in the jungles then the Japanese started to get pushed back, making the use of air drops the Chindits could commit guerilla warfare . Force Z should of had aircover, but HMS Indomitable had ran aground in Jamaice

@XpolarstormX The British were also sending 48 Hurricanes to Singapore, these were sent in January, but a month later the British had surrendered. IF the British had not sent the spare supplies to the USSR then Singapore would never have fallen, if the British had held Force Z back until HMS Indomitable was available then they would never have been sunk.
