One of the most vital practices that need cultivating in the new media environment is increasingly refined B.S. detecting. We should hone this skill first on ourselves.
Are reading and writing beyond criticism? We are culturally indoctrinated to be filled with the anxieties made possible only by the written word (some academics types can even develop a stockholm syndrome with these anxieties)... So what is the narrative? You're sub human if you don't champion the written and spoken word? The new media will rot your teeth.
And where does it end? Are non Western cuttures sub human ones? Can a member of the Piraha ever give a Englishman advice?
Take a look at the YT "superstar" leader lineup. Psychotics, obsessives, basket cases, frightened young men, creepy old ones, sexual deviants, needy young-and-not-so-young women, "bizarro" feminists in reverse....
humanity will never lose a sense of leadership, ever and i think all these media changes are great and allow more views on topics, there might be views that are false but you can look up many sources now a days and find what is the most credible information, it's better to have more information than have less access, people don't memorize things like they used to because we don't need to because we have tools that do it for us, the world is changing at a exponential rate, it's not going back
Another dilemma in "follower-ship" seems to be its confluence with "fellowship." Montaigne, Nietzsche, Hoffer & many others have noted it & it remains a perennial problem for politicians, religionists, social scientists, etc. It always leads through mimetic desire to individual judgements of us vs. them, felt solidarity, teleological perfection, utopianism, etc. Living in the hyper-real world of the internet often attenuates these social constructs & obscures the many hazards that they contain.
Great topic. I am hopeful, not irrationally so I hope, that this technology is the main tool that helps us organize ourselves without the "need" for coercion, which I think is a necessary ingredient of "strong" leadership in the sense you are referring to. After we rediscover freedom after our current organizational system breaks down sufficiently to cause serious questions from the populous, I think the old paradigms requiring strong leaders will be challenged.
It's a good video, as usual Corey. The advice of when to take advice is something that's had my brain turning since I've heard it as I'm trying to figure what it means for someone to be doing better than me or worse than me (and "at what" I guess is the question) and how I can really know this.
The other day I had to write a check and I screwed it up because it has been about two years since I have had to use a check. Write something? Like with a pen? That is like Flintstones stuff these days.
I don't know one phone number other than my own. I have thought about this a lot... my brain will just dump information that it knows I can get from the internet which is in the palm of my hand. I think the same is true for many people , if they are honest.
@lmcdowall I don't even know my own phone number, in fact I only have a phone because I could not get this connection without one.
I LIKE his suggestion that memorising a thing can be learned as a craft and I do not doubt that he is write, though I AM removing "memories" as they tend to create associations that are problematic when understanding NOW, the most important TIME.
is there anyone not working for the money god? and SO "advice" is tainted by SELF interest in that, surely.
Great video. I guess since, in you need advice, it's tough tell good advice from bad advice, so following someone's advice would require trust. Sometimes people who are doing worse than you could give good advice because they've made mistakes or experienced hard times and learned from them.
Interesting and pressing stuff! In taking the path of least resistance we often times do ourselves a great disservice. I think the key to prosperous following is to see it as an active role. Instead of forfeiting responsibilities, the task is to see the self-obligation of learning. The same is true perhaps with research. Not: "what does Google say?" But: "how can I make this knowledge my own?"
"Strategy is the ability to lead men; it is the craft of the warrior."
-- Miyamoto Mushashi, Book of Five Rings
So many places use misleading titles like supervisors and leaders. Yet, those who lead have no patience to teach and guide others in the right direction; ones who backstabbed their previous leaders. The fear of being replaced causes those who lead to use nothing but coercion and artifice to make those who are good come to ruin--- a perverted Machiavellian ideal.
I dont agree with your advise strategy, because his quote is then hierarchical perhaps. I always like the anecdote of who is the better man- the one who crosses the desert with camels and tents or the man who comes out of it with no water! To me that is high performance.
Great video! We have found increased challenges teaching the younger generation the paramilitary organization and habitus of the fire service in our courses. Our academy program has had to become more overt about the chain of command, meaning of rank, etc.
