I have a 1990 ls 400 right now with 172,000 miles and running like new. Crazy ahead of its time still. Want a big new BMW, just get a used Ls 400 for a better price and perform.
Japanese cars are now tainted with high levels of nuclear radiation, including Plutonium-238, 239 and 240 which will increase your incidence of cancer, infertility and sperm damage.
u could probably stack those glasses on the engine itself of any brand v8, v10 or v12, they all run smooth as butter. just because lexus put it in a commercial all the retards are like "o wow thats amazing, only lexus can do that they must be magic" im not hating on lexus im actually about to buy an ls400, but come on
i always remember the awe and inspiration i felt when i saw the first Ls 400 . it truly was a game changer. I have an is IS 350 today but I still love the big lexus. I will probably get the ct 200h - gas prices - because of my ultra heavy driving ( over 45,000 mile per year ) But I would love to sit in that ls 460 luxury.
This shows the true quality of Lexus. I bet a brand new Cadillac can't do this test! But a 1990 Cadillac?? If you can find one still running, the glasses would shatter before you even place them on the hood! I say Lexus is the best even though I drive an Infiniti I still acknowledge a truly great car.
this is cool and all, don't get me wrong, but I honestly DO NOT care if I can balance champagne glasses on the hood of my car, it's not like I can do it while I'm driving... but still, very cool.
No, the trick is smooth slow changes in throttle. Any luxury car with a V8 will send those glasses to their broken death if you jam on the throttle like a cocaine addicted chimpanzee. It's the effect of the engine torquing/twisting around the soft engine mounts. Anybody who has flogged a Chevy 350 small block will know what I'm talking about.
If you do that with the S-class, the glasses will fall, if you do it with 7series the glasses will fall, Audi A8 and tje glasses will fall.. Lexus LS ' The Relentless Persuit of Perfection'
Great cars, don't get me wrong. But would you guys try starting the engine with the glasses on top? Or how about instead of revving the engine in neutral, you put it in gear and have the drive wheels on rollers? You know, so you can test the smoothness of the transmission shifting gears, etc :)
There is no doubt in my mind that had the original video, which this is in RESPONSE TO, had access to a dyno, that the new vehicle and the original would be able to recreate the original commercial with no problem. having said that, this is still impressive. ive driven brand new domestic and import vehicles that dont rev as smoothly as any Lexus does. yeah, they did it slowly... the fact is they still did it. Lets see someone do this with a Ford or some other POS. Lexus FTW!
The original ad had the car on a dyno, which adds vibration from the entire driveline. Do you have access to a dyno where you could recreate all the elements of the ad?
@jex9 As a matter of fact I have tried using a canadian 1 dollar coin (not round but is apolygon, don't remeber hoe many sides) and placed it upright directly on the engine of my 2002 IS and slowly revved it from idle to redline, and the coin never fell down.............
Actually, what we learned is that the commercial can be replicated with today's iteration of the vehicle. Period. They probably did the exact same thing in the first commercial as they did in this remake of it so there are no asterisks necessary. They did exactly what they set out to do: replicate the old commercial with the new car. Mission complete.
@KyleOutrage it's slowly accelerated to give it a constant speed and vibration. I wouldn't expect anyone on the road to be constantly revving and re-revving their engine on the highway like their car's on steroids.
Im amazed that the valve springs didnt break on the LS 460!!! They ARE great vehicles, I own a LS430,and Im a Lexus technician. Im just saying that Lexus needs to do more to avoid all these recalls. I started with Lexus in '89, and back then, we never even thought about a recall....there was tons of testing done before the vehicle was released. The quality is suffering... Im a loyal Lexus owner, I have a 05 GS300 and I come from a family of Lexus owners and I have to say that, thats not impressive, you guys slowly revved it to 5k. Rev it fast and hard and see if it the glasses stay there.
A slow run to 5000 rpm doesnt prove anything either, if you floor it and they stayed on then I'd be impressed. My pickup truck wouldnt knock over glasses if I reved it that slowly
Im not saying its fake, but instead of just saying "no glue", knock it over or take it apart after the video to prove it. The camera faded in and out enough time where you could have easily glued them down.
@xevious2501 Hey idiot...look at 22 seconds. This is a response to the owner who did it wrong without the dyno so they're doing it without the dyno as well. How about you WATCH THE VIDEO?
The alloy wheels shown in the video were available on 1993+ models. So either it's a 1990 model with 1993 wheels (possible I suppose), or it's a 1993-1994 model. You should clarify this point because 1st gen LS fans would definitely notice this.
@incyphe- beat me to it! Good catch! It also seems to have the air suspension from the cluster lights (not that it matters while stationary)- 93/94 wheels, can't see if the odo is digital and ON the cluster and can't see enough of the lower side trim to tell which year M1 LS it is. Oh, and those are some thick heavy looking "champagne glasses"!
indeed, rolling tires, driveshats etc have a change to cause some more vibrations. (that was the point of whole original lexus commercial, they did prove that even those areas of the car are well balanced)
i mean i can recreate this whole thing with my 1970 Buick GS455 too without the dyno, so it' s nothing special.

Ok, but the glasses probably fell at slightly higher RPM than what they show - that's why they didn't go to the redline in each car.
And that's why there are two different max rpm used: only 4000 rpm for the 1990 and 5300 for the 2011.

We've learned that:
The car must be pitched to create a horizontal hood.
Special glasses must be used.
The throttle needs to cautiously manipulated to ensure the engine doesn't rock on its mounts.
With enough asterisks you can accomplish anything.
